Sloppy QC to go along with their sloppy ads.

What a shame. Club cigar is one of the most beautiful buildings in town imo, AI slop plastered everywhere just ruins that
62
u/sleepy_sad_boy 4d ago
Oh yum... maggot textured Ai generated images of "food".
I'd rather see poorly lit photos of the real dishes or even no photos at all. Using Ai shows they have no confidence in their food actually selling so they have to resort to lies

u/flcl021 4d ago
You know if the food menu at a Chinese restaurant is so faded that you can barely see it, the food is going to slap.
21
u/Background_Season449 4d ago
Or one of those changeable-type Coca Cola menu boards. You'll probably have a heart attack from the grease, but everything will be delicious.
1
u/Morberis 4d ago
As someone who has visited many super disappointing Chinese food places, absolutely not.
12
u/WutInTarnashun 3d ago
I used to go in there from the to time to get a cheap cigar and I was kinda excited to see what the new owners brought in after the old ones cleared house. Walked up, saw these ugly ass posters and kept walking. As with Gryphon's Lair down the block and that Greyhound Social Club opening soon, lost all interest when I saw the logos

u/mike_rumble 2d ago
Back in the day, the store used to be the place to go for magazines. Now, I realize that print is not as big as it once was, but the current selection is extremely small. Even Shopper's and some grocery stores carry a magazine inventory that's much larger. The new owners have a really great location and history, but I'm afraid their venture is doomed unless they come up with a better plan as to what to sell and how large an inventory to have on hand.

Why is it so difficult to have the cooks make one example as good as possible and photograph that example? With modern phones it's not even difficult. At least that way the pictures actually represent the food
2
u/excellentbreakfasts 4d ago
It's not supposed to represent the food. It's supposed to sell hot dogs. You think that the food photographers pouring white glue as fake mozzarella all over pizzas for 75 years ever gave a shit?
8
u/EnvironmentalDog- 4d ago
The glue at least made it look good.
So far as I’ve seen, these AI photos make food look like genital warts.
-3
-8
u/Morberis 4d ago
Come on, no it doesnt. It does look CGI/over-photoshopped and does come off as fake though.
3
u/EnvironmentalDog- 4d ago
Look at that ground beef. Then do an image search.
It’s even worse in AI fried chicken.
-1
u/Morberis 3d ago
Fair, but a reverse image search gets me Choco crunch pictures and ground beef pictures.
This sounds like something with your algorithm, and possibly other similar people's algorithms.
I've seen real grey-ass ground beef that looked way less appetizing.
Going if I reverse image search this I can see some disgusting stuff is a weird way to take the argument. That's true of many things. That's guilt by association level reasoning.
Attack the issues that make it look unappealing. It looks fake, it looks plastic, it looks like it clearly doesn't represent real food. Even saying the texture of the ground beef is wrong.
I agree, it looks fake, it isnt going to sell me on their food because I know it's fake.
3
u/EnvironmentalDog- 3d ago
I mean… do an image search of genital warts… and compare it to the beef in OP.
This has nothing to do with my algorithm.
0
u/Morberis 3d ago
Oh god I just did, doesn't look the same. That is to say this AI image looks as similar as normal ground beef does. Both can be interpreted in some disgusting ways.
This is definitely a bias on your end. Which, w/e if that's what you think of that's what you think of. And if 1 person thinks like that there are usually others. But it's definitely an interpretation and it's not the only interpretation.
This reminds me of people that do AI roleplaying that can't stop seeing AI slop everywhere. Even in books make 40 years ago. Acknowledgeing that yeah, I know it wasn't written by AI 40 years ago. But it follows the same patterns. The real issue is that they became sensitized to something being AI and now sees even organic use of that prose as AI. Making even famous well respected books seem like they're badly written because of the association.
5
u/EnvironmentalDog- 3d ago
>Oh god I just did
This is not the reaction of someone who knew what genital warts look like before insisting that AI ground beef doesn’t look like it.
1
u/Morberis 3d ago

2
u/SnowedinLife 2d ago
I really hope that using AI for things like this becomes universally hated by everyone and rejected. I would love to see genuine and honest businesses succeed instead of the ones who use AI.
8
u/FurysFyre 4d ago
I have mixed feelings about this. I hate AI slop in a lot of ways (environmental, oligarchy) but also for a owner that is sole proprietor small business they often don't have advertising budgets and AI is pretty inexpensive atm. (not saying this is the case here I don't know anything about Club Cigar other than walking past it)
There are a few businesses in town that are doing it and I can see the appeal because you get a *somewhat* flashy and professional look for, free(ish) which is pretty appealing if you don't have great profit margins, which is where a lot of businesses are right now. The ease of sitting at your own computer and slapping together something in a night without consulting others and lead time etc. is pretty appealing. I know a couple local business owners using AI and while I'm not a fan I can see why they do it- and they are great people, and great businesses, they just have no budget for advertising/signs.
People say they would prefer a kids drawing over AI - which might be true, I don't have statistics on advertising effectiveness, but the flashy professional shine that AI puts on things is aesthetically appealing (for the majority) as it was designed to be. A lot of people won't even notice it's AI :(
14
u/foxhelp 4d ago
The cringe / sloppy factor definitely has me reconsider shopping at any business that uses it.
Partly because if you can't care about how your business is advertised/portrayed then why should I care about what you are selling. Kinda feels like a conman trying to sell you something.
In particular I have passed on farmers market vendors, food trucks, and online stores with sloppy AI.
4
10
u/AwesomeSuaceable 4d ago
They had the budgets to get those giant ass signs printed and put up. Taking a photo is free. If they were really poor pitiful small business owner they could’ve just not put up signs at all. Could’ve spent a few bucks on some window markers and wrote ‘hot dogs’ on the window. There is no good excuse for this slop
2
1
u/Morberis 4d ago
A normal photo would look like shit though. There is a reason that there are food photography specialists. A normal photographer probably could have produced something pretty usable, at the price of more than doubling the cost of these signs though.
5
u/AwesomeSuaceable 4d ago
‘A normal photo would look like shit’ and these don’t!?!?? Lmao. I’m a photographer, if a small local business came to me I’d do it for stupid cheap. A picture of food for a poster doesn’t need to be at the level of a McDonald’s commercial either, so that’s a stupid false equivalency too. If you have no standards, no decency, no sense of community, and just don’t give a single fuck; then everything you said is totally true tho.
2
u/BrilliantKnee3439 3d ago
It's a hot dog, I don't think someone going to buy a fucking hot dog cares if a professional photographer like you took the photo or it was generated online.
-1
u/Morberis 4d ago
They would both look like garbage, one would look like garbage to a wider audience though. Even the vendor provided advertising materials are often garbage and not-representative of the actual product.
Heh, my wife has actually approached photographers for getting professional advertising photographs of her handmade products. Cheap is not the word I would use. We ended up paying several grand with someone that specialized in it. Which was actually cheaper than what generic photographers were quoting us.
You may be willing to do it cheap but how is anyone to know that? Unless, and even if you run a photography company that comes up when someone Google's for photographers, it's a toss of the coin whether anyone is finding you. Many people are not exhaustively calling every company asking for a discount because they're a local small business. That's actually a good way to get people upset at you.
And if you do advertise, congrats we likely communicated with you and got qouted the prices I used as a basis for saying it would more than double the price of the advertising. Though this was about 3-4 years ago.
2
u/AwesomeSuaceable 4d ago
Handmade products would go better with a self taken photo anyway, everyone has a fuckin 4K camera in their pockets nowadays. Just because you have several grand to burn and no sense, doesn’t mean everyone else has no ability to do some creative problem solving and get a better deal. Also do you seriously think this successful restaurant has less money than you and your wife to spend on ads? Brother, you’re destroying your own point. Stop defending slop.
5
u/Morberis 4d ago
Edit: dangit, I accidentally deleted my other reply. Btw, I don't live in the suburbs bro.
You absolutely are not a photographer then if that's your evaluation. Most people have no idea about what they don't know when it comes to photography. And photos taken under an 80cri yellow lighting are going to look like garbage. Even if they know how to setup a diy light box, properly defusing the light and using photography grade lighting is outside of their wheelhouse. But more importantly, is time spent researching and doing that that could be spent on their business.
If you think well taken photographs don't impact sales numbers you should probably look at all the research to the contrary.
It's possible they do make less, yes. I've seen a few stores where the owners collect a wage that's only near $20/hr. I've known the owners of some stores where that was the case. My wife's stuff has been in museums and been on museums tours. She makes more than I do per year. Professional photography was definitely the right way to go. No, she doesn't sell her stuff online or in a store.
0
u/AwesomeSuaceable 3d ago
The suburbs thing was more of a metaphor because you run a trinket business and can afford to spend thousands on advertising. Self taken photo goes along with the handmade feeling, you’re selling a product not a lifestyle, you aren’t versache or some other stupid brand, but the point isn’t ’all you need is a good camera’ the point was you had an opportunity and an excuse to just be authentic, and instead you spent a bunch of money. Lame as hell. Never said anything about good photos not being good marketing, and once again, even a shit photo beats AI slop, so that’s a moot irrelevant point. A business owners wages are not the businesses account; a restaurant is not the same thing as selling trinkets from home. There, now that I’ve explained everything to you like a child, can this end now? At the end of the day this whole discussion spawned off of you defending SLOP GARBAGE. You already lost, there is no discussion to be had.
4
u/Morberis 3d ago
Lots of assumptions there. If my wife's business was a trinket business she would be selling online wouldn't she? She likely also wouldn't be in museums.
If you think club cigar is a restaurant you don't really know the store.
If you're assuming a small businesses bank accounts are healthy and full you are making a wild assumption.
It's the same quality of reasoning and reading level that led to you concluding my disagreeing with how good of an idea it is for them to personally take pictures means I am supporting AI slop.
0
u/AwesomeSuaceable 3d ago edited 3d ago
You said she was making ‘handmade items’ trinkets isn’t some slur, wtf else was I supposed to say? Vague poster over here expects me to be psychic. Drop the smug aura dude. Your wife being in museums has nothing to do with AI slop or your personal opinions on slop posters.
Okay genius, so according to you; they can’t take their own photos becasue they’d suck, can’t hire professionals becasue it’s too expensive, there are no alternative means to getting good work done for cheap either apparently… so that leaves the AI option… but apparently you’ve been against that the whole time too, even though you didn’t mention that once until now… So what do you want them to do? No ads at all? Cool that works. Should’ve just led with that.

I think of you knew anything about photographer you might understand how much work and skill actually goes into a simple hot dog photo to make it appealing.
1
u/AwesomeSuaceable 3d ago
The very obvious point, that a million people have made, is that even a picture taken on a goddamn flip phone is less visually abysmal that SLOP GARBAGE
6
u/Banned_In_YYC 4d ago
Well I don't have the same strong feelings towards AI is you, this is the most balanced take.
2
1
u/platypus_bear 4d ago
I do understand them using AI but at least take your own photos of your food instead of letting AI generate everything. That should be the bare minimum if you're going to advertise food as if it's your own.
I personally don't think it's that difficult to create your own graphics without using AI since there are a lot of options these days for templates that you could use.
1
u/Morberis 4d ago
Most places don't take their own pictures. They use licensed pictures from a vendor.
You're talking about templates but templates are literally the easiest part. The skill and equipment to take good photographs is the hard part.
If that's your suggestion it has the same energy as thinking anyone can be a wedding photographer.
1
u/OMGCamCole 3d ago
There’s also just the reality of AI in society and marketing - which is that it isn’t going anywhere
People can “not like it” all they want, but it’s not going to stop companies from saving millions of dollars by using it.
Imagine instead of having 30 employees at your local marketing agency, you have 3 people who “fix” the AI’s work
Or production company lets AI write the script for movie/episode/video, and handful of people fix it, opposed to hiring a full writing and editing staff
Reality is companies are going to continue to use it and as much as people might not like it; it’s genuinely in their best interest to embrace it, and honestly, learn how to efficiently use it
2
1
u/MasterCJ117 3d ago
On top of that, not only does the average person not care if it's AI or not, it's also a matter of advancement, while many people won't like it because they see their lively hood at risk, they have no choice but to embrace it.
If I recall correctly, way back in 1811 there were 2 men who destroyed/attacked a printing press for the same reason. Almost every job(if not EVERY job) has some kind of advancement that caused this to happen.
The only reason it's SUCH a big issue right now is because of the internet allowing those affected to have a loud voice(and instead of adapting, they're complaining), people see it as political because 'This guy' or 'That guy' supports/develops it, or because Chinese bots were found to be spreading discourse about it.
That Chinese bot thing isn't a conspiracy theory btw, it's been proven that they are trying to shape public discourse to be negative toward AI and Data Centers(in the US at least, probably all around too), the irony is that they use AI to do so and people believe it.
Oh and a lot of people hate AI art, yet don't realize it's a boon for disabled people who want to create the things they see in their head, whether that be artists that developed conditions/got in accidents, or people who were born with conditions preventing them from being able to learn/do art.
1
1
3
u/dbusque 4d ago
It really bugs me that people who use AI for this kind of stuff don't realize that it is contributing to the argument for data centres. For some reason they justify their "little project" as something deserving of a pass but then don't acknowledge that they are a drop in that bucket that is being used by big tech to burn down the house.

I've got mixed feelings, on one hand I know there's a graphic designer in town that probably would have loved the opportunity but on the other hand with how expensive it is to run a business these days I get not having room in the budget and I think I'd rather businesses use AI and contribute to our downtown than have them go out of business
10
u/Weird-Praline580 4d ago
Tbh I think lots of artists locally would design ads or signs for relatively cheap if businesses put up an ad for wanting signage but I guess that would depend on their advertisement budget
3
u/Melstead 4d ago

You implied it lmao do you have a real job or do you just spend the entire day morally masturbating in Reddit echo chambers?
5
u/RainingInkAlberta 4d ago
I’m sorry but if you can afford to print out these huge ai signs.. you would’ve had enough to pay an artist to do even a simple window painting or something instead. Or use half the budget to pay an artist and only make half as many signs? Or take real pics yourself to print out. Ai is simply lazy and ignorant. These aren’t even needed, you can advertise without giant ridiculously busy photos blaring in people’s faces.
IMO there’s no excuse, pay an artist, do it yourself, or do it smaller if budget is such an issue.
2
-5
u/Dubey89 4d ago
Seriously who cares? It’s a small business that was probably never going to hire a professional designer.
I get it “AI is evil”, but maybe the small business owner trying to grind out a profit can be granted a bit of leeway?
3
u/riddim-bot 4d ago
"Who cares" has to be the most annoying rhetorical question. Obviously people care, that's why we are in this thread.
I'm opposed to AI advertising on principle, but also because I think it's tasteless and hideous. There are exceptions but I am generally not willing to give leeway, particularly when the use of AI bypasses any thought or care about the advertisement and product.
I think we ought to use our voice as consumers, because it is getting increasingly more difficult to vote with our wallet.
2
u/Dubey89 4d ago
Are we really going to get into the weeds of the semantics of the phrase “who cares?”. Do you really believe that publicly airing out a local small business over something so innocuous is a good use of OP’s keyboard warrior energy? There are bigger problems in the world, even within a very narrow “anti-AI at the local level” niche.
2
u/riddim-bot 4d ago
Yes I really will.
Yes I believe it's a fine use of OP's energy because I don't think it is innocuous.
Yes talking about AI use at the local level is worth talking about in our local subreddit despite their being bigger problems in the world.
1
u/Dubey89 4d ago
There’s a difference between “talking about” and getting out the pitchforks to publicly drag a local small business owner through the mud and encouraging others to not patronize the business over some sloppy AI generated sign boards.
1
u/riddim-bot 4d ago
Ok then I will outright say I am fine with dragging local businesses and encourage people not to patronize the business over sloppy AI generated sign boards.
If the expectation of advertisement is to increase business than I believe it's totally fine for us to discuss our distaste for advertisement in a way that may decrease business.
Like I don't want local spots to go out of business but we gotta draw a line somewhere.
1
u/Morberis 4d ago
It may mean that they bypassed any thought or care about the advertisement or product but it may not.
AI doesn't automatically mean no thought or no effort. That's as reductionist as people that used to say that about Photoshop.
0
u/littlesirlance 4d ago
These are much better then the previous window ads that they had about a month ago.
It really irritates me when I see local businesses using AI slop, but the sad truth is that for small businesses they don't have marketing budgets or want to spend skads of money on visual designers or photographers.
I've seen several local restaurants using AI slop on their menus.
It's just kind of what it is now. I wish it wasnt this way but it is and it makes me sad.
0
u/trickier_disco 3d ago
Fuck off with that bullshit. There is NO excuse, none, to use AI in any thing you advertise. Boot-lick harder
-9
u/YqlUrbanist 4d ago
I'm not sure if that looks any more fake than most food ads. Cereal commercials have been using white glue or paint in place of milk for ages.
Obviously the point is more about AI use, but I feel like that's an uphill battle. It's really hard for a real artist to get anywhere close to the convenience of an AI tool that can spit out a "good enough" image in 10 seconds. Even people who genuinely would like to use real art are going to struggle to justify the time it takes.
6
u/el-pollo-coco 4d ago
the point of using white glue for milk is for the cereal (or whatever being advertised) is the main focus. it sits on top of the glue (or, in some cases it’s propped up on something else as well with a thin layer of glue… i digress), the glue doesn’t soak up into the subject while photos are being taken…. it all makes sense. the only things an AI photo is showing is what whichever model imagined their food to possibly look like and that the business owner doesn’t care to take the time to put out quality work that reflects the quality of their business
1
u/Morberis 4d ago
As an aside,
There is a very wide range in what the model imagined their food to look like. Wide enough that it even includes image2image to do light Photoshop style corrections.
The models interpretation only matter if you're leaving everything up to the model which is absolutely stupid. This is like saying if you digitally alter an image using image editing software it's just going to look like that image editing software's style.
It's very clear that many people in here think that AI is a brain-dead tool to use that takes no thought, but all you're going to get out of it then is brain-dead stupid results. Which does not mean that's the only type of thing it can do.
The ethics of AI are completely up for debate yes, the ethics are not great at all. But many people here are being super reductionist and seem to have very little idea about what they're insulting.
1
u/YqlUrbanist 4d ago
Maybe the glue was a bad example, but that kind of thing is everywhere in advertising, including the product itself. There's a reason nobody in human history has had a McDonalds burger that looks like the ads - they have people who glue the sesame seeds on for maximum aesthetics.
I do agree though that there is a difference between something that was at least actually produced by the same company as the real product, vs an AI model generating something based on a bunch of pictures of food that might have nothing to do with the company advertising.
2
u/BKNOWSB 4d ago
But making those food ads was someones job. Having a computer do it impacts the economy
1
u/YqlUrbanist 4d ago
You're right. My reddit comment was about food looking fake, not trying to encompass the entire political and economic scope of AI.

oh my goddd, dumb suckers like you are the problem, thinking the only options are a $500 professional logo or free garbage.

it takes really just a small amount of intention and thoughtfulness to explore just some of the spectrum between the two options. AI is only ever the laziest solution.

1
u/-screaming-meat- 4d ago
those fast food chains use actual physical product in their photos. even if it's plastic, it's still a tangible, physical representation of an item and not some cpu's fever dream delirium taking a guess at what a burger is supposed to look like.
1
u/OSTBear 4d ago
Ehhhhh actually technically they're under super strict regulations with that, because people believed what you do.
They actually use the product they make, they just present it slightly different.

I have no idea what you just said. It sure doesn't seem like a valid reason though

You'll be the first on your knees when robot's get dicks too. Get used to it

They did. It's shitty. Pay a local photographer and a graphic artist instead of shoveling money into the AI furnace.
Also, it's misleading.

You ever own a business? If you could do something yourself, why would you pay someone else?

If I can't do it properly, I'm going to learn how or outsource. Using generative AI to cut corners is the same as cheaping out on your ingredients, you'll lose your good customers and keep anyone who is fine with mediocre.

Totally. I really dig the game console(?) and “a’zza’s” on the pizza ad, the empty two-pronged speech bubble coming off the soda, and “Every bite is a black perfect for shariet” on the nacho one.
