City Council has deferred a pro-Canada motion under October 20

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1cmC5ZVWTF/

Recently Councilors Crowson, Schmidt-Rempel and Doria along with Mayor Hyggen introduced a motion affirming Lethbridge's place as a vital part of Alberta and Canada. This was intended as a motion opposing the idea of separating from Canada and stressing the economic damage that separation would do.

Today instead of voting on it, 5 council members misplaced their spines and deferred the motion until after the referendum is over. Those 5 are Mayor Hyggen, and Councilor Doria, Beeber, Campbell, and Wolfe. You read that right - two of the people who sponsored the original bill deferred it until after the election.

Sorry for the Facebook link - I haven't seen proper news sources yet, but Councilor Crowson confirmed it as well as former mayor Chris Spearman.

Just a vote to defer? No reasoning? Bizarre.

I didn't listen to the debate, but the reasoning to defer to a Community Issues Committee is almost always because they want to give the public a chance to comment. So the committee is on the 20th, the public can speak, then council will vote on it again some time in November most likely.

I guess they brought it forward too late then. Seems moot after this week, for sure.

I think that's giving them too much credit. It's pretty clear where public sentiment is on separatism and council is more than capable of acting quickly when there are time constraints - this isn't a legitimate desire for public feedback, it's a way to defer until the heat is off.

I think the reason probably has something to do with the huge separatist flags hanging off the big properties and businesses in southern Alberta.

Such weakness from our elected leaders.
Meanwhile I'm building a self-destruct clause in my commercial lease so I can move business and family in the event of separation or attack.

Councilor Beeber has put out a statement in response to the criticism:

I agree with him that it doesn't make him a separatist. However it does make him a coward.

No it makes him someone who want all the information before he votes. He made his position very clear. Guess you didn't actually read his post. Bottom feeder

I read his post. It's transparent nonsense. He questions several times whether it's tied to the referendum... and frankly I don't believe for a second that his critical thinking skills are so cooked that he genuinely has to ask that.

Yeah you read it as someone who already made their own opinion. He clearly stated why he chose the path the council is taking and also clearly stated hrs pro Canada. His job is to thie voters he's doing that. Whether we agree with it or not. Your hard stance sells the opposition well.

Are you honestly telling me that you think Al Beeber read a motion titled "Lethbridge Affirms its place as a vital part of Alberta and Canada", and then legitimately wasn't sure if it had to do with the referendum happening in 6 days about whether Lethbridge should remain a part of Canada?

Holy fuck you just don't get it.

If I don't get it why are you the one dodging a simple question? Sounds like the answer is obvious and you just don't like it. Or maybe you're the one who didn't read his statement.

Why am I not surprised that this motion was put forward by Councillor Wolfe? incompetent seppie can't handle council voting on something he doesn't agree with.

I don’t see a problem with this

You don't see a problem with deferring a statement on separation until November when the separation vote is in October?

I don’t see a problem with Leth City Council prudently deciding not to affect individual voters before the Big Day.

And it’s NOT a ‘Separation vote’ - there are 10 questions to determine voter sentiment to move forward on sorcifuc issues.

Ah, you're one of those. Then yeah, fair enough, you're probably one of the people our spineless councilors are pandering to.

It is a vote to start the process based on misinformation and lies. What would you call that?

The issues were never vetted or asked of anyone they spent more money on a boondoggle than your kids education. Think about that

Council should stay out of this issue. Picking sides on a hotly contested political topic while the city has no real say or ability to make choices provincially. Individually councillors (like everyone) can share their own opinion. They represent ALL of lethbridge, not just a side. I am not a sepratist but this should never be make political by our local elected officials.

Did you just suggest that which country we are in shouldn't be made political? What else could it possibly be?

The job of council to represent all of Lethbridge, which includes things like opposing it when a minority of our province wants to kill the economy.

Vote option 2 for an independent Alberta.
