anyway, putting that boring thing aside (the person who thought it was ugly), i really loved how it turned out, especially since it was my first actually heavy rice

i'd already done a tui style one with sway, but this was my first little aesthetic one like this

I rewrote my Quickshell config as a native Rust shell for Hyprland: bar, dock, Dynamic Island, desktop cards, Spotlight-style search, control centre, notifications, and a lock screen.

Why native?

On NVIDIA, every process with an EGL context maps the GL driver, costing about 100–160 MB RSS before the first frame even renders.

• Mist draws its surfaces on the CPU into wl_shm buffers.
• Completely event-driven — hidden surfaces do zero work.
• Only the live wallpaper (spawned as an isolated process) touches OpenGL.

Hello everyone, I’ve been a Linux user for about a year, and I started "ricing" a few months ago. My journey began with Debian, and I’ve now arrived at CachyOS. For the past two months, I’ve been using Quickshell, having learned from someone I consider one of the best in the Quickshell community: saneAspect (https://www.youtube.com/@saneAspect).

im a linux first timer and a lifetime windows user and it is strange when using a new os for the first time and compatibility issues occur sometimes but its mostly because of the years i used windows and wouldnt bother me as much when get used to this system. i have been using zorin for almost a month now and i like it but looking at the arch linux guys rice and theirs are so much cooler tbh. also is it just me on zorin but my track pad has been acting up weird the last couple days anybody who uses zorin can you let me know if its for all users or is my system the only one?

The fun part: the launcher is a Pokedex, and a CI failure pops up as "A wild CI failure appeared!"

The useful part: the bar shows my current project and branch plus my AI coding agents, and one keypress opens a drawer with CI, PRs, containers and ports.

Rice

Its the 'yuk' rice preset from the ryostrore but with a different wallpaper! Pretty simple, and its also just a different Fastfetch from the ryostrore. The programs i am running here are Yazi (Top right), Fastfetch, obviously (bottom right), and Fetch (Left), and that is just a spinning logo of the distro you're using. btw i came from unixporn so the headline is kinda different from the others.

- A notch at the top of the screen that says when something finishes, in one line, then goes quiet.

- A search that finds apps, files, settings and sums, and passes anything else to the web.

- Colours taken from your wallpaper, across the desktop, the apps and the terminal.

- Its own apps: Pinax (files), Viewer (photos, video, PDFs), Graphis (code editor), Settings, Apps (more than 1,300

apps, one press to get one), and Praxis for an AI agent if you want one (Claude Code, Codex, opencode or pi, signed

in with your own account). Nothing else depends on an agent.

- Thyris, a browser on Chrome's engine, with uBlock Origin Lite built in and Google's AI features off.

- Updates download in the background. The notch offers Tonight or Restart, and they install while the computer

restarts, with no password.
