Gear - Tech Issue I Forgot To Pack My Boom Holder!!!

I'm on a set right now and realized I didn't pack my boom holder. What I'm going to do? Is there a crappy DIY version of boom holder or something else to act as a boom holder?

Second this But don’t tighten it too hard if you have a carbon pole

Ask if anyone has one in their vehicle. There are plenty of DPs and cam ops who own one and you might get lucky.

You don’t need a boom holder. You can rig up the exact same mechanism using a regular C stand, a gobo head, and a long arm.

Use the gobo on the stand as the fulcrum and the gobo on the arm as the “effort force” that the butt of the boompole pushes up against. Make sure you set up the gobo the right way so the whole thing tightens under load. Big leg of the stand under the weight/pointing towards the mic, double bag that mf’r and you are good.

I did this last week for the first time! I eventually added a clamp (extremely loosely) for some stability and babysat it most of the time, but yeah it worked. Never thought about doing this before.

Old school! So much better than cracking a pole with a Cardellini!

I often use a c-stand boom holder rotated to allow leaning the pole into the curve. This is what I'll be using later today. But this thread make me think I should make a slightly more secure version with a rubber clamp.

You could ask the grip dept if they have a viser clamp or something similar. Just be sure to wrap your pole in a towel or something to protect it.

Your hands?

Yep. That or talk to the grips for them to scramble something for ya.

They'll be happy to!

Hope G&E has wide cardellinis

There is no safe cheap crappy way to secure an object on a 5-15' arm overhead.

Just go make nice with the grips and borrow a cardellini, and then be careful tightening it.

Or, as said above, use your hands.

Cardellini

Linda? Hell yeah.

I worked with her, it was her grandfather or dad or something that invented the Cardellini clamp . She told me the story.

Brother I believe.
It was Steve Cardellini who invented them. It’s much funnier to call them Steves.

Edit — Google is claiming they’re not related

Why the hell would she make that up, so weird .

I’ve used a boat mounted fishing rod holder from Walmart in a pinch. Fits right into a c stand clamp

The grips can help with a cardellini, make sure to use something like a small towel to prevent damage to your pole.

been there - options (assuming you have a c-stand) - 1. cardellini, as others have said don’t over tighten. 2. c-stand arm, gobo and tape. 3. mafer - a cardellini would be better but same idea. 4. hold it, and the pain and embarrassment will make sure you never forget again.
note - afterwards, buy a cardellini and keep in with your kit. they come in handy every now and then

I keep a mafer to pin my recorder to a stand, which doubles as my backup

2

u/PeacefulShards Jun 11 '26

You mean like a cradle!
Guess you’ll be holding it with your hands.

2

u/japanistan500 Jun 11 '26

Mafer works just fine

A boom operator. A grip if you really are desperate.

Helluva ask 😂

2

u/Chasheek Jun 11 '26

Has happened to us all. If there isn’t a mafer, etc., rest the pole btn the large tightening knob and the clamping part. Hope it’s not a multi mic day.

I guarantee it won’t happen again though

Two stand two grip heads

I used a C Stand and a Manfrotto clamp with a little sandbag as counter weight. Was a short boom though, only 3 - 4 metres.
