Gig / Prep / Workflow Arri SR3 onboard microphone

Hello,

I m a caméra assistant and I have a documentary on film coming up in Kazakhstan. The director want to have some scratch audio and was looking at a solution to have an onboard microphone on the Arri SR3 that would be sync to the rec of the Camera. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to have a proper sound guy since the access to the location is really controlled and we only have two autorisations (me and the dop/director). Would you have any input of how i could do it ? Thanks

ARRI sr3 has no preamps or internal sound recording capability. It is a film camera so it will likely be noisy —even a high quality shotgun microphone mounted on camera and running to a small external digital recorder like a mixpre3 will most likely be negatively impacted by the sound of the film mags…

Yes that for sure, it would be for scratch audio only. But how could i sync the mixpre3 to the film ?

Timecode slate is standard operating procedure with film cameras. However I understand that you are short handed. I’ve worked with a DOP who shoots a lot of film on super low budget and his approach for sync was to Velcro a tiny ZOOM handheld to the camera and record free run all day. He used the sound of the film mag spinning up as the cue points to assemble the “scratch track” with the film footage in his NLE and would then sync the production sound mixer’s tracks to that. Pretty unconventional but it does makes sense.

Tentacle Track E (2) sync has a built in mic. Size of a matchbox. Input through the TimeCode plug. Can record scratch audio.

Assuming the director has a feeldmonitor which can record. Then sync with that feeldmonitor.
