Micro Four Thirds 42.5mm F1.7 or 12-35 F2.8?

I have the fantastic 25mm F1.8 on my GX85 but would like to get a news lense for low budget/diy events and weddings. Which one would you recommend? The portrait(ish) 42.5mm or the all rounder 12-35 f2.8? I only have the budget for one since I'm saving up for a G9ii. Probably 70/30 video/photo split.

L-Mount S5IIX Double Lens Kit (20-60mm + 50mm f/1.8) at 1,700€ after cashback: historic low or wait for Black Friday?

Germany.

Looking at picking up a brand new S5IIX bundle with the 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 and the 50mm f/1.8. With the current Panasonic cashback promotion and VAT included, the final price comes down to 1,700€.

For those tracking EU pricing on the S5IIX lately: is this about as low as the new retail price gets for the double kit, or have we seen deeper cuts during November/Black Friday sales? Also curious if it makes more sense to grab this bundle and flip the 20-60mm, or just hunt for a body-only deal.

L-Mount Is it normal for the S5 II to get slightly warm after 30 min in the menus?

Hi everyone! I recently got a used Lumix S5 II and I'd like to check whether what I'm seeing is normal.
I did a simple test: I left the camera on for about 30 minutes, just navigating the menus. No recording, no burst shooting, with the rear screen flipped open.

Setup:
Firmware: latest version
Fan mode: Auto
Room temperature: 21°C (about 70°F)

After that time, the body feels mildly warm, not hot. The best way I can describe it is the warmth you'd feel on a surface where you've kept your hands for a while, even though I wasn't touching it. The warm areas are:
the area behind the display, where the screen's hinge assembly sits
the front part of the grip, roughly in line with the sensor
No overheating warning showed up and the camera kept working normally.
From what I've read online, many owners say their S5 II doesn't warm up in situations like this, so I wasn't sure if mine is within the norm. Since it's still under warranty, I'd rather check before ignoring it.
Do your S5 IIs get slightly warm after 30 minutes of idle use with the screen on? Is this just the magnesium body dissipating heat from the sensor and processor, or should I be worried?
Thanks in advance!

Show and Tell My approach to a sturdy, documentary-ready Lumix S9 rig

Thumbnail

Hello everybody,

I'm a cinematographer in fiction and documentary. Last summer, I had to rig an S9 to be production-ready for two projects in Ukraine. The S9 was my private fun camera, but since it was the only camera at hand with a limited budget, I decided to go the route with the S9 and rig it out.

I want to share "my" rig because I think it can be helpful for others, who are looking for a working solution.

The concept was straightforward: sturdy but lightweight, ready for production. Of course, the latter is not really achievable with the S9 since you can't jam the timecode, for example. Also, sound I/O is strongly limited, as is the micro HDMI port on the right-hand side ergonomically wise.

These are the components:

• Lumix 24–60mm f/2.8 (with Hybrid Zoom, you get 93mm on the long end)
• Glimmerglass 1/8, 82mm (to work against sharpness in camera)
• Black Pro Mist 1/8, 82mm (not attached in pictures, to swap with glimmerglass, works better at night because glimmerglass introduces orbs around light sources)
• B+W Vario ND Filter, 82mm
• SmallRig Mini Matte Box mit 82mm Ring Adapter and 82mm Filterthread for ND (mist-filter is attached first in this directorion - glass, mist, adapter ring with filter thread, nd-filter)
• Rode VideoMic NTG + Rode DeadCat or pop-protection with power on/off trs-cable
• SmallRig Articulating Magic Arm with 3/8 and 1/4 ARRI mount
• 8Sinn Cage
• SmallHD 502 (with sunhood)
• Important: Angled Micro HDMI Spiral Cable https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0DM561J5F?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

I ordered a lot of cables and adapters, and with this rig, this is the exact cable that works because of its size and the angle of the connector.

Because of the size of the cage, my hand barely puts pressure on the angled micro HDMI cable. When holding the camera you feel the sticking out connector only a little bit. It sticks out by around 5 milimeters. One could optimize it, by installing something on the grip side (like a cheesebar for instance) to make it somewhat flat.

I also have to point out that the port on the micro hdmi S9 feels solid, since a lot of people worry about it online. Before shooting, I was really concerned and ordered a lot of different HDMI clamps, which never fitted the way I needed them to. Now, afterwards, I think this is a working solution, although the cable isn't protected with an HDMI clamp.

Why does this rig work?

The articulating arm is connected with an ARRI mount (3/4-inch screw and two pins). The monitor is also connected with a 1/4-inch screw and two pins.

The articulating arm itself is really sturdy; it works as a top handle.

Through the SmallHD, you can monitor audio and use the shotgun mic at the same time.

Videomic NTG has a safety track (good when bitrate is below 32), and it is not cumbersome. Sound is good enough, you have a long warranty, and support from Rode.

Problems?

When using the 82mm adapter ring for the matte box with the Glimmerglass, Adapter Ring and ND filter attached, there is vignetting between 24mm and 35mm. Fix is to get rid oft he adapter ring (and mattebox)

______________

I can't share footage because both projects are in their funding phase. Sorry for just posting boring pictures of the camera, but as I said, rigging this camera isn't ideal and some might say counterintuitive, and I couldn't find any proof-of-concept rigs on YouTube, so I hope this helps somebody eventually! Of course: The main idea behind rigging such a small camera is, that you make it somewhat ergonomically and more feature packed, but when you're done, you can make it small again.

If you happen to have any questions, I'm ready to answer them.

Happy shooting!

General / Discussion CFEXPRESS cards off the roof

In early 2024 when I got my GH6, I later bought an Angelbird AV PRO SE CFexpress B

1 TB for less than €400... Fast forward to now, that card serves me well is no-longed in production and the newer version costs 7-800 Euros, I've had a look at other brands, prices are crazy there too.

Any body with a better memory card recommendation?

Please note: I prefer cards to SSDs...

Compact / Bridge (OC) my first time with a Lumix camera L10

Testing the Lumix L10 on a trip to Kyoto.

I'm coming from a Fujifilm X100VI, and I was honestly surprised by how different the L10 feels. It has a completely different look and character, which I really enjoyed.

All shots are straight-out-of-camera JPEGs.

Still learning photography, so I'd love to hear any feedback or suggestions. Thanks!

L-Mount Is the S1R still good in 2026?

A bit of context: for my job, tech reviewer, I shoot a huge amount of product photography. So far, the S5IIX (that came after the G7, then the GH5, then the GH5II) has been good enough to go by with my 24-105 f/4. 24mpx, though, aren't that many pixels to be able to crop and zoom on everything I photograph, and the 96mpx High Resolution through pixel shift mode is probably TOO MUCH both in terms of detail, hassle and file size, sooo the natural path would be grabbing an S1RII but it's still incredibly expensive.

My question is: is the Lumix S1R photo quality still good today? Or maybe it didn't pass the test of time?

Thanks in advance :)

L-Mount Versatile lenses for 2 camera travel setup

I am trying to figure out what would be the best lens setup for a lightweight travel photo and run & gun video/documentary setup. Two cameras for two people and lenses that provide lots of flexibility. They would be paired with two S1ii cameras. Which lens option, or other setup would you go with?

  • I want to be able to get fairly wide to a bit telephoto (that's why both options go from 20-200mm)
  • Being really light and compact is important
  • Durability and weather resistance are also important
  • I don't want to mix between Sigma and Lumix because of the zoom ring direction.
  • The plan is to travel by bike for possibly a couple years while both documenting the trip and creating a documentary along the way.

Option #1:

Sigma 20-200

Sigma 28-70

  • Pros:
    • Larger focal range without changing lenses
  • Cons:
    • Lackluster weather sealing on 28-70 (we will definitely find ourselves at times in poor weather)

Option #2:

Lumix 28-200

Lumix 24-60

Lumix 20

  • Pros:
    • Lumix lenses have some special features (cropless stabilization)
    • Better weather sealing
    • Image stabilization on 28-200
  • Cons:
    • Need to change lenses to go wider than 24mm (not sure I’ll need to do that often)

Option #3...?
