General Question UTS or Macquarie for Business

So I'm a Yr 12 student planing to study business at either UTS or Macquarie. I already got an early entry offer from Mac and applied for SRS for UTS and hoping to hear back by November.

Was hoping on business students at these unis sharing their opinions and experiences but also students as a whole sharing how social life is. I'm a very social person and I do agree that it is what you make of it. However, because UTS doesn't have a main large campus like Mac does I was wondering if that would affect meeting people ect.

Mac is definitely further away from me, around 1 hour 20 mins where UTS is 40 mins so it can be hard to choose between social life and convenience. Do we think the commute is justified?

Happy to hear different opinions and experiences though, thank you!

Just don't underestimate how significant that is. It can and will become a real pain.

I specifically chose Mac because its a 15 minute ride for me

Yeah shoulda done the same lmao.

5 minute walk from Mac. 1 hour 20 min to UNSW.

Yeah, I'm looking to transfer to Mac lmfao. UNSW Electrical Engineering is genuinely insane.

Lol same here as well. 40 min via PT vs 70-80 min for other uni

Having travelled all my life via PT without a car, the difference in times are incredibly noticeable.

Every uni (except WSU and smaller ones) but Mac are 30-40 minutes longer compared to going to Mac. Even if I make it into better unis, that 1.5hr difference each day really adds up

Yeah I live a 5 minute walk away from Macquarie Uni but live 1 hour and 20 mintues from UNSW which is where I'm going.

It is probably a lot more annoying than people think. It locks up everything and makes you woefully rigid, especially having to rely on the public transport system so much.

Looking to transfer here cos UNSW is so tough but yeah idk.

Do you go to UNSW?

Mac has been my dream uni simply because I like the campus and it's also really accessible via metro

Yeah I do go to UNSW.

Wasn't expecting such staunch resistance in first year engineering. My situation is not exactly bad but it sure as hell ain't good either.

Don't know if it's any better at Mac U tho. If yk anyone that does electrical let me know what it's like at Mac U, cos UNSW is pretty insane. There's the whole accreditation business too which I think is now fine but still, not too sure.

Parents like the prestige of UNSW and everything but I just want a humble life, living within my means alone so yeah I would really like to transfer here next year.

yeaa thats true, I was thinking of putting all my classes on 1-2 days if possible but even then time is precious

That’s doable. But also consider that you will have other activities to do too. Like societies and club, exams and event days. So be prepared for those duties as well.

Thanks whoever for the metro, such a life-saver if you are in the area benefited from it.

That is very very true!! Thank you so much, I will take this into consideration. Fortunately, I am benefited by the metro yet it's still a bit of a treck for me.

There has been many posts about UTS vs. Mac in this sub so you can check that out without waiting for people to comment. Business is within the Business School so check out posts from people who study Marketing/Commerce/Finance/Accounting since most of the reviews would be relevant.

Personally, I enjoy the wide open space campus and the next door shopping center way more than UTS campus.

The 40-min-commute-gap could be a pain in the ass someday tho

Thank you so much, I have seen some but will keep looking. But yes, I know the time difference will definitely add up throughout the week and over time.

open campus at Mac is definitely nicer and UTS feels like an office building. But UTS being in the CBD means you're close to internships/networking events

That’s true but MQ main campus is only one metro away to the CBD and MQ also has a city campus too

I would suggest UTS if you were in engineering or IT, but from what I've heard MQBS is quite good and reputed. Also the open campus and the shopping center beside mq is convenient as well. Perhaps try to take all the classes in a single day of week? That will ease your commuting problem

Thank you! Yes, I was thinking I could schedule all my classes into 1-2 days because I do have a friend that goes there and she loves it and says shes met so many new people. I have another friend at UTS who is finding it so hard to meet others as most ppl just go home after class

IT and engineering people are not known to be social, from what I've seen in general, although it depends from person to person. MQ is quite good plus I love the campus, it's nice. UTS don't give that vibe, quite boring.

There is no difference in the degree quality. Use your own values to choose which one

I've often been asked by students to help them choose between UTS and Macquarie, and the number one factor is the commute. Go to the university with the shortest commute. If you can afford it, move closer. That time saved will make your studies more enjoyable and much less stressful and give you the option for doing all sorts of other activities.

Thank you sm for your reply! and yeaa thats true. Still waiting to hear back from UTS SRS but I'm really hoping to get an offer

I also applied for the SRS. We only need a 60 Atar if that’s approved?

yes thats right, but either way hoping my yr 11 marks make the cut.

Choose UTS. Macquarie's In Class Test System SUCKS Big Time. And the 3 Assessment Rule is Very Bad.

can you elaborate?
