I’ve read it’s not fight or flight, it’s flight, fight, or freeze. I usually freeze like this groundhog

Get em while they're sleeping! Mine are so used to it now, they'll wake up halfway through probably because I had to move them slightly due to the angle, and just let me finish. They're 14 now.
I just told one of my cats I needed to trim his nails.

Those are Marmots, which are even more entertaining to watch do things.

Also, let's not forget - let's not forget, Dude - that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city - that aint legal either.

All groundhogs are marmots..
2
u/Extra_Connection77 Aug 25 '26
…but not all marmots are groundhogs. 🤓 sorta like the age ol succulents and cacti comparison 😅

That’s me when I’m helping my wife trim the dog’s or cat’s nails.

u/bunny_the-2d_simp Aug 24 '26
That's me with my bunnies nails. Which is also a 2 people job.
Every time I'm like.
Here? This much? Yes? You sure?

Every. Single. Time. My Daisy also had black nails, so it was even harder. She was a bitch, but I miss her.

Gosh been there, my older lady was my absolute soul. Only nice to me, could be a bitch to everyone else.
But she died 1 year ago in June and it absolutely shattered my heart especially because I had missed out on giving her all the attention she deserved since I was in clinics and hospital due to anorexia nervosa for 4 years only seeing her occasionally inbetween for small visits.. And she must've waited... I miss her so much 🥹 she died at 11 years old but I feel like I could've done better, even though I should not beat myself over it afterall no one chooses to get a eating disorder.
I still have 2 of her old sons but they're not really cuddly. Unlike her with whom you could sit for hours.

Your story spoke to me, I couldn't read and not comment! I just wanted to say that you absolutely should not feel bad for what you went through. Your sweet bun got to see you recover from your ED! It's okay that others cared for her for awhile- I bet she was always happy to see you, no matter how much time it had been. And maybe she gave you the push you needed to fight your illness? No judgment at all from me, you sound like an amazing bunny owner!!

She was definitely a big factor as unlike everyone else around me, she didn't blame me or yell or throw things. She didn't change.. Just wish I had had more time

wrap it like a baby in a towel, just take 1 paw out at a time. makes the job so much easier
6
u/ImFeelinBotty Aug 24 '26
Much easier solution. Add in positive reinforcement via treats, and now my dog gets all happy and sits in her bed when it's time to trim the nails.

u/ZamazaCallista Aug 24 '26
I foster cats, some HATE that sound more than they hate the regular clippers. Varies a lot. If I get very young kittens they learn they get smothered with treats and love afterwards so they tolerate it better.

It's a groundhog dude, they can predict the future, so the other one is feeling his own clippings in advance lol. So cute!

It only reacted to the little claw he could see. Calmed right down when the other claw was being done. So cuddly.

Seems like the little one is cringing from what they expect from clipping nails (pain).

gave me flashbacks to the Philly Karen at the baseball game. Same actions by the guy trying to protect his kid

How very human! Exactly how I react when I’m with someone getting medical treatment.

My brother and I had twin beds as kids. I’m the sister, and back in the day kids were spanked with a belt. My brother got it first and I would scream while he was getting whipped, but by the time our mother got to me, she was worn out and it didn’t hurt as much as I thought. Of course kids don’t get spanked with a belt anymore and as an adult she told me she would go to her room and cry afterward. It didn’t change the fact that the only thing we learned from being whipped was to hate our mother. However, this groundhog won’t hurt as much as he thinks. But he won’t trust the zookeeper either.
