Self actualization 😆

[u/tokiobest]

Dogs realizing what they look like is probably one of the funniest things out there 😂

[u/javel1]

This is so stupid, but a huge pet peeve of mine is when people say seen instead of saw.

[u/bigbigpure1 → u/javel1]

good comment, do you feel saw?

[u/SabbyFox → u/javel1]

OMG, right!? Then one of them doubled down and said it’s correct 😆

[u/ReadMeLikeDrCox → u/javel1]

Really? I haven't saw that yet.

[u/McBlemmen → u/ReadMeLikeDrCox]

You aint seen it?

[u/Temporary_Abroad_211 → u/McBlemmen]

Oh you ain't seen nuthin yet.

[u/Bostonterrierpug → u/javel1]

Look up corpus linguistics, and descriptive grammar :) a lot of people get annoyed that language is living and changing thing, but that’s just the way we do it.

[u/thegrammarspammer → u/javel1]

It’s not stupid. It’s important.

[u/Money-Director6649 → u/thegrammarspammer]

important for a rando on a casual social forum? i don't find that it matters.

if they don't know how to speak proper school english in contexts that require it, they won't find themselves in those contexts very often. look, i edited books for a living, and was trained by one of the best editors in the country.

she didn't need to tell me that context matters.

i get that it's a pet peeve. we all have them. mine is "loose" for "lose." you loose the hounds, you lose your virginity.

i don't bother pointing it out on social media, which is just as casual as hanging out in the park. ofc i'd correct it if i were editing a book or some other piece of professional writing.

i also don't correct people in casual conversation face to face. know why? it's rude.

[u/Temporary_Abroad_211 → u/Money-Director6649]

Loosing the hounds and losing one's virginity just casually hanging out in the park used to be called "Friday night". 😉

[u/javel1 → u/Money-Director6649]

Loose and lose as well as customer and costumer just entertain me.

[u/QueefMyCheese → u/Money-Director6649]

5 words warranted all of that and you ended it all by telling them how you're better than them

Lmfao

[u/Eatshin → u/QueefMyCheese]

I'm better than you

[u/NoIndividual9296 → u/thegrammarspammer]

It really isn’t, words change spelling and meaning all the time and will continue to do so until the sun dies, the only thing being a stickler for grammar does is make you unpopular socially.

If you are able to correct someone’s grammar or spelling then that means you understood the meaning of what they said, which is the only bit that actually is important.

I’m a grammar anti-fascist and hate grammar Nazis

[u/javel1 → u/NoIndividual9296]

As I said, it bothers me and I think it's because it is so widely used. I understand it's not important in the grand scheme of things but that's what makes it a pet peeve.

[u/Money-Director6649 → u/javel1]

yeah, we all do have them. what takes it further, and--for me at least--increases my annoyance is when i go a step farther and point it out. i find thins bother me less (and certainly bother others less) when i just feel the feels and move on.

[u/Key-Demand-2569 → u/NoIndividual9296]

I get what you’re saying, and I don’t go around correcting people…

But on Reddit alone I’ve seen a stark degradation in people’s ability to both communicate themselves effectively and read and comprehend what others are writing.

And it’s absolutely not just a Reddit issue, it’s just been very visible here. It’s a society wide issue when it comes to written communication.

There’s some value to making an effort when it comes to grammar and wording because that’s part of it all.

“Understanding it well enough to correct them means you understood them.” means I probably don’t care to bother correcting anyone, I’d agree with you there. …but it’s not great all the time because they’re probably not honestly communicating as well as they think.

[u/Mean_Direction_8280 → u/NoIndividual9296]

It may not always be necessary to point it out, but it's not an excuse to not learn proper grammar, pronunciation etc:. You'll be taken more seriously. English seems to be the only language where so many people will give you a pass for not bothering to speak it properly.

[u/thegrammarspammer → u/Mean_Direction_8280]

This is the most important point. If you want to be taken seriously where that matters, it should be correct. I teach English and I know there are ten million ways to express oneself, and “proper” grammar is absolutely rooted in white supremacy. I’m all for cultural expression, language evolution, et cetera. However, when I receive an email from my principal in a professional context and it’s rife with errors, I lose respect for them. Plain and simple. Miss me with the “you know what I meant” nonsense. That’s middle school shit, dawg.

[u/thegrammarspammer → u/NoIndividual9296]

I’m plenty popular socially despite my rudeness. A person assuming I should be able to understand them is just as rude as me correcting them. Also, talk about degradation of meaning - I have certainly never committed a genocide because a person misused they’re, their, or there. I just like to be a dick on the internet for personal reasons. As my students would say, “it’s not that deep.” Chill the fuck out.

[u/T-MoneyAllDey → u/javel1]

What about seent?

[u/TreeDollarFiddyCent → u/T-MoneyAllDey]

I seent it!

[u/SerGT3 → u/javel1]

I seen a lot of dumb comments but this one takes the cake.

[u/Skittles_The_Giggler → u/javel1]

So you’re unfamiliar with AAVE? Or is the whole dialect a “pet peeve” of yours?

[u/5000fed → u/Skittles_The_Giggler]

You tried. Saying ‘seen’ instead of ‘saw’ isn’t limited to one dialect.

[u/Skittles_The_Giggler → u/5000fed]

It not being limited to one dialect doesn’t invalidate it being a part of AAVE. Tough concept, I guess.

[u/MeNoCanRead → u/Skittles_The_Giggler]

Rednecks say that shit too.

[u/Skittles_The_Giggler → u/MeNoCanRead]

Great! As someone born and raised in Ala-fucking-bama, I had no idea 🙄 my comment was not meant to and did not imply that AAVE was the only dialect which replaces ‘saw’ with ‘seen.’

[u/MeNoCanRead → u/Skittles_The_Giggler]

Then maybe don't accuse people of being ignorant of it specifically in your first comment?

You sound like an asshole.

[u/Skittles_The_Giggler → u/MeNoCanRead]

Pointing out usage by one specific dialect (the person who used “seen” in the video was Black) does not preclude usage by other groups of people. You sound like a dumb ass.

[u/MeNoCanRead → u/Skittles_The_Giggler]

The irony of this conversation is that you're the only one here focused on race.

Try to have a nice day.

[u/Skittles_The_Giggler → u/MeNoCanRead]

Again, because the usage OP was referring to was a Black persons use of “seen” vs. “saw.” You’re the one who had to “all dialects matter” the situation.

[u/5000fed → u/Skittles_The_Giggler]

You know what you were implying.

[u/Skittles_The_Giggler → u/5000fed]

No, you simply inferred incorrectly

[u/TremendousVarmint → u/javel1]

or sunk instead of sank

[u/jakexmfxschoen → u/javel1]

"I seen't you pull a person's jawbone off. I seen't it"

[u/GasTrickLeVahzh → u/javel1]

This is similar to a recent conversation of my wife and I’s.
