I love the way they trade off playing!

I’m not a musician so I’m not sure if this is something basic any musician can do…but the way they instinctively know when to play solo, when to take over and when to play together (with, obviously, no rehearsal) is so much fun to watch.

Music can kind of be like conversations where theres a certain pattern to it where people naturally know where someone is ending so they can start, or certain indications that they're passing it off to you.

Ah, that makes sense!

I was impressed by how easily the older woman did that—since she probably doesn’t play every day like the younger guys. But, like others have said, it’s muscle memory kicking in!

She definitely used to play all the time. That grip and cadence aren't something you just do out of the blue one day. Granny is a former pro drummer for sure.

Not "former": Current. Avtive. Creative. Talented

and aside from a bit of fade on the left hand at times, she didn't try for the visuals the youngers were into. just following her own jam. love it.

Yes, that's what I meant--her muscle memory from her playing days kicked in and it was impressive!

I agree. That's years of playing. I'm taking drum lessons and hope to be at her level one day. You build upon each learned beat.

Yeah, granny’s got real skills and part of that is the give and take of when to step in and when to lay back. It’s an easy skill to pick up but it is 100% a sign that somebody knows what they’re doing.

Oh she plays all the time... she's in a few bands in GA and is amazing!

When you're grooving to a song you've never heard, do you "feel" when a crescendo is coming? it's the same thing.

For not being a musician, you got the name exactly right. This kind of thing is called "trading," typically "trading 8's" or "trading 4's" - meaning every 8 or four measures. I do 8 measures, then you do 8 measures. That's exactly what they were doing here. (with a few missed measures for a bit of showboating) ;)

Jazz, blues, funk, bluegrass and more, the common language of the jam!

That's why the title refers to the "pocket". When jazz musicians are improvising, it's called being "in the pocket."

I thought it was referring to drummers specifically being so in-time and tight it’s like they’re operating within a small pocket of space. I’ve only heard it used when talking about percussion.

I’ve mostly heard it used rhythmically, too, but not just for drummers. It’s like being “in the groove.” Not just playing strictly, perfectly in time, but more like being JUST loose enough without being TOO loose. That’s what gives it the feel.

In the most magical of circumstances, a whole band can be in the pocket together.

Aha! You saved me a google search 🎵

yeah, if you have a sense of rhythm and a feel for improv/jamming; pretty much anyone with knowledge of an instrument can drop in and out at will, contributing what they want/can and play off the other performers and vice versa. pretty organic

She is good!

It's just jump in when you feel like it. As long as you blend in with the beat, it's not going to feel out of place.

I love how she dances in between.
