Not only did Grandma have fun and seemed to enjoy herself, but after she was done, just like a typical grandma does, she gives them money to thank them.

This is the fucking sweetest thing I've seen this morning.

334

u/Ladyhappy 14d ago

She just pulls the wad out of her pocket. She doesn't even count it.

240

u/chiono_graphis 14d ago

Reminds me of how my grandma used to give me a wad of bills. I'd try to refuse but she'd say "shush I know all young people need money. Don't let your mom see it"

138

u/fr3n 14d ago

And giving money hidden in the palm of the hand like a drug deal going down. Damn it, I miss my grandma.

72

u/Neither-Dentist3019 14d ago

Yeah, my grandma would catch me in the hall and go "psst!" "hey! cmere!" and give me money handshake drug deal style. Then she'd say "don't tell your mom" and do that thing where she points at her eyeballs and points at me. Miss her so much.

13

u/Asleep-Corner7402 13d ago

I saw my granny (my dads mum) slip notes into my mums bra 😂 like here you won't take it? I'll make you take it and down the cleavage it went lol

8

u/Leumas_ 12d ago

That’s hilarious. My granddaughter sticks her play money in my waistband like a stripper. I’m a middle aged dude and I can NOT figure out why she does it. 😂

That was all my Great Uncles when I saw them as a kid. 6 ft tall Sicilian men all giving me $20's like some mob hit was going down. Telling me not to tell my Aunt, who subsequently almost always passed me money either before or after.

30

u/LilMissMixalot 14d ago

Same. Leans in, palms me a couple 20s and either says, “Don’t tell your grandfather” or, my personal favourite, “Be good (then a mischievous glint in her eye) but not TOO good.”

She was the reason I have a sense of humour. I miss her.

Bro my grandma still does this...I'm 37, own a home and make good money. I went over last week to move some things around and carry some stuff upstairs where she just stores things in extra rooms, and as I was leaving I caught her trying to slip a $50 in my pocket.

I was like, "Grandma, I come over because I want to see you. You do not have to give me money for me to come see and help you with things 😂"

8

u/Riribigdogs 13d ago

You’re so lucky to still have your grandma 🥹 I would say to cherish her, but it sounds like you do 🥰

11

u/NSE_TNF89 13d ago

She's the only grandparent I have left and I certainly do. I see her at least 2-3 times a week.

She loves telling stories and I love hearing them, so it's a win/win 😁

7

u/cire1184 13d ago

You should record her stories so you can pass them down.

153

u/FuckYeaSeatbelts 14d ago

For the lazy and/or young: Phil Collins is a well known drummer and a member of the band Genesis.

35

u/Vintage-Grievance 14d ago

Same Phil Collins who worked on providing soundtracks for Disney films, I presume.

37

u/Bitter-Value-1872 14d ago

Most notably the Tarzan movie

18

u/Vintage-Grievance 14d ago

Yup, and Brother Bear, too.

23

u/TheLordVader1978 14d ago

Ya, him and Elton John pretty much ruled the Disney movie soundtrack back in the 90s

3

u/Vintage-Grievance 14d ago

Agreed.

It was just a different scene in those days, where entertainment was front and center, and marketing was in the backseat- not in the trunk- but it wasn't like you were watching the movie the entire time, going, "That will be on the shelves in Walmart soon".

u/ZhouLe 14d ago

To add: Phil is roughly the same age as the woman in the OP video (75), but hasn't played drums in about 20 years because of health reasons. Many years of touring and performing were rough on him and caused nerve damage in his neck and hands, making it to where he can no longer grip or feel drumsticks in his hands. He toured with Genesis in 2022, though only did vocals, and his son Nic played drums.

20

u/Trackbikes 14d ago

Oi Buster, now I feel old

19

u/mcbaginns 14d ago

What a strange way to describe him lol.

He was the lead singer too. He was responsible for the reverb drum sound that all 80s music had. He is one of three musicians to sell over 100 million records as a band member and a solo artist with the other two being Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney.

"he was a drummer and member of a band" tells the uninitiated nothing lol

u/slackjack2014 14d ago

Looks like a classically trained drummer the way she holds the left stick. Grandma knows what’s she’s doing.

379

u/breath_ofthemild 14d ago

Band director here. That’s traditional grip, which is used in either jazz bands and corps/show style marching bands. She was in one or the other (very likely both), and if she’s still able to move like this, was an absolute monster. The other guys are great, but Nana in her prime would have absolutely smoked them

97

u/Primary_Assistant742 14d ago

Former DCI drummer here, but a little younger than this woman. (GenX) Had the same thought. We all learned tradish.

14

u/BotulismBanquet 14d ago

I bet memaw won high drums at nats back in the day! (I’m a former Jonz)

9

u/Primary_Assistant742 14d ago

Nice! I was in a much smaller corps, but my instructors were also SCV ( and one was in Blue Devils too ) when they were younger.

This granny is also really short compared to the guys, so the drum is not at all at a natural height for her. Was thinking that on the rewatch.

7

u/BotulismBanquet 14d ago

Yeah and her enthusiasm is so nice! Having a blast trading 4’s with the youth

34

u/tf_inuyasha87 14d ago

The minute I saw the grips, I knew she likely had ages ot performance and training under her belt

9

u/ncopp 14d ago

My first thought was what years she would have been playing in her Highschool/college marching band?

14

u/Soulmemories 14d ago

rofl she still plays in a marching band. Seed and Feed in Atlanta.

15

u/Humble_Initiative_90 14d ago

She definitely knows what she's doing, but at the 1:28 mark where she gets excited is pure musician recognizing skill. She was having fun but she was having more fun with a skilled dancing partner. Gah I miss music.

38

Oh, I didn't think she looked cute. Cute would be if she came by with some milk and cookies. She has had some serious training and she looked like a badass.

13

u/doctormink 14d ago

I gotta admit, what made me even happier was seeing she was not only jamming, but also had the cogntive/bodily awareness to keep her belongings safe. I'm the kind of idiot who would be tossing my purse aside in a fit of reckless abandonment if I got to jam on the drums with dudes this talented.

28

u/Quiet_Falcon2622 14d ago

Pure joy on her face. Can’t watch without smiling.

105

u/Kitchen_Guest577 14d ago

I guess she had to show them the old skills! Love when older people show they still got it! This is life ladies and gentlemen 🤘😎🤘

42

u/BuffaloInCahoots 14d ago

They knew the second she went with the traditional grip she knew what she was doing.

80

u/UnmolestedBell 14d ago

This was so fun to watch. Not enough mentions of the young men that showed respect and let nana do her thing. They treated her with respect from the beginning and when they saw that she knew what she was doing, they sat back and vibed with her. Props to them for bringing an open mind for the way they approached this!

57

u/4444Grains 14d ago

I love the way they trade off playing!

I’m not a musician so I’m not sure if this is something basic any musician can do…but the way they instinctively know when to play solo, when to take over and when to play together (with, obviously, no rehearsal) is so much fun to watch.

36

u/DrThunderbolt 14d ago

Music can kind of be like conversations where theres a certain pattern to it where people naturally know where someone is ending so they can start, or certain indications that they're passing it off to you.

15

u/4444Grains 14d ago

Ah, that makes sense!

I was impressed by how easily the older woman did that—since she probably doesn’t play every day like the younger guys. But, like others have said, it’s muscle memory kicking in!

26

u/Sienile 14d ago

She definitely used to play all the time. That grip and cadence aren't something you just do out of the blue one day. Granny is a former pro drummer for sure.

11

u/Signature_Strong 14d ago

Not "former": Current. Avtive. Creative. Talented

14

u/BasementDesk 14d ago

For not being a musician, you got the name exactly right. This kind of thing is called "trading," typically "trading 8's" or "trading 4's" - meaning every 8 or four measures. I do 8 measures, then you do 8 measures. That's exactly what they were doing here. (with a few missed measures for a bit of showboating) ;)

18

u/Nahuel-Huapi 14d ago

That's why the title refers to the "pocket". When jazz musicians are improvising, it's called being "in the pocket."

115

u/Prestigious_Yam8901 14d ago

Through Music!

People underestimate how the beauty of music brings us all together, especially people that can play music together.

One of the first instincts a toddler has is to dance to the sweet, beautiful, sound of music.

This is why music and the arts are so important!

13

u/the_headless_hunt 14d ago

Music and food are great uniters

7

u/Thatguythatdrew 14d ago

Its not just music. Its Art.

The act of creating and then sharing in that creation. Its fundamental social bonding.

There are lots of young people out there who just love it when old people break the stereotype and just go for something like this.

Just wow!

The look on her face says it all. She is loving life and these kids are loving her.

Is there anything cooler than watching people bringing joy as they do the things they love?

AND she dropped cash at the end!

Respect. 🙏

Old people used to be really cool, ask about their stories, they may have a hard time thinking of random stories so be specific when you ask them. I guarantee they'll surprise you.
