I was reading an article about water buffaloes in a farming magazine. I mentioned to my mom that the article said children are often put in charge of water buffaloes, as they are very gentle... and my mom said "wow! That's true! My first pet was a water buffalo!".
Apparently she got a little buffalo calf for her 7th birthday. (This was in Eastern Europe, not Asia) I was surprised to hear such an immediate confirmation of the article.
So never be surprised to see a water buffalo with a young owner. They go together.

u/YeahNahMateAy 7d ago
OK that's fucking wild. In other parts of the world, water buffaloes are more feared than large cats because of their agression towards humans.

I think you're thinking of Cape Buffalo (Africa). Those are a different animal and legit scary. Cape Buffaloes, as I understand it, won't stop attacking just because you're dead!

18
u/i7-4790Que 8d ago edited 8d ago
so you haven't been.
There's a huge difference between a cow somebody spent a lot of time with since they were young. And a cow that only interacts with people getting within ~20 feet of them at best for most of theirs. The ones with an already mean/wild mother tend to be the same way, those are the ones that will kill you when the calf is a newborn. While ones around a mild mannered mother usually have similar temperaments.
Different breeds have different general temperaments as well. But even a black/red angus can behave a lot like an oversized labrador if somebody spent a lot of time with it and it came from an already mild mannered cow.
And that's including fully grown bulls.

Yeah, I keep getting these shorts in my feed from a farmer with a big bull called Rufus, and in a video I watched yesterday, Rufus was like trying to brush up against him, and the farmer kept moving around a tree to make sure he had a barrier between them. He said something like "Rufus isnt mean, but if I get between him and this tree, he would squish me like a grape. He wouldnt mean to, and he wouldnt understand what happened. He'd just know that I didnt make it."

I used to go out with the daughter of a dairy farmer and she was talking about how every now and then a farmer in the area would be killed by a bull. What surprised me at the time was discovering that it usually wouldn't be aggression but mostly young bulls being overly playful.

In my hometown in the Philippines, large trucks carrying sugar canes pass by near our place. When i was a kid, we used to wait by the road and wave at them if we can see them approaching. They slow down or just stop for a bit then throw us lots of them.

I've seen videos of sugar cane trucks (don't know where, exactly) that get stopped by elephants, and they don't let them through until they pay the toll. It's really cool, but probably annoying for the drivers.
44
u/himejirocks 8d ago
In Louisiana we would chase the trucks piled high as they drove under the low hanging trees to grab the cane that got pushed off. Good times.

Here in South Africa too. Honestly wild to me that people question this. We've even got these guys at markets that will mill the cane and you get INCRDEDIBLY sweet juice from them. Even more surprised to learn that people in other countries don't get sugar from sugar cane thought it was everywhere
26
u/uconnboston 8d ago
That’s in Southeast Asia too. It’s a street cart with a grinding crank. You run the sugar cane through the grinder to get the liquid and you add little oranges in for a better taste. Used to be served in plastic bags with ice.

I actually would like to get my hands on a sugar beet and try and airfry it. I get some Japanese sweet potatoes here and they're amazing if you just poke a few holes in and bake them. I imagine a sugar beet would be even sweeter if it's a stand in for sugar cane.

Is it bad for your teeth or not really? What is the consistency like?
23
u/Heavy_Record8704 8d ago
Occasionally, no biggie. Its not a daily thing. If you do it often then yes, it is hard on your teeth. Sugar is never good for your teeth and these have high concentrations. Consistency- i dunno whats the best way to describe it. Maybe thick wafers that dont crumble but release lot of sugar water when crushed. I am doing a bad job of describing it lol

u/WomenRepulsor 8d ago
It isn't bad unless you are eating is just before bedtime. On the contrary, some adults here in India suggest to give young children sugarcane, so that they have proper teeth alignment because of having to chew and tear through a hard surface. They say it helps develop jaw muscles.
The consistency is almost like water. You wouldn't feel it any different than drinking a very sweet water. The part that is spit out has a spongy fibrous structure.
6
u/Fancy_Elk565 8d ago
It’s like biting a wet stick and you get juicy sugar water as a result but because it’s a stick you just chew till the flavor stops then spit it out

Yeah, you can. And if you have a press you can squeeze it and get all the juice out.
I grew up in Trinidad and Tobago where we use sugar cane to make rum. Behind our schools there were fields of it, and during our soccer games we would trespass and steal a few stalks.
The thing is, the land is either government owned or privately owned. And some of the farmers who can't afford tractors use these breed of bulls to haul the cane out of the fields. They keep the bulls tied up in the field like guard dogs. If they see you dragging stalks, they will chase you. Happened to us a few times. We joke about it today. One of my schoolmates lost his sneakers running from a bull through a swampy patch.
I went to FSM a few months back and sugar cane was growing everywhere. I was walking with my coworkers and they were so surprised when I pulled out my knife, hacked a stalk, and just started chewing on it.→ More replies (2)14

Remove the brown or green hard outer covering and you have the exposed whitish yellow stick inside. You chew on the stick and suck up all the juice and then spit out the crushed bits. Do not ingest the chewed up stuff. Similar to chewing gum.
4
u/OverallMembership709 8d ago edited 8d ago
you can buy sticks of it (peeled and chopped to certain lengths), then chew and suck on its juices (spit out the chunk after). some stores have a crusher specifically for canes and juices come out at one end then served with ice. the juice is very sweet and really delicious. some even mix lemon juice, ginger or whatever to balnce its sweetness.

138
u/SFLoridan 8d ago edited 8d ago
OMG - and here I never thought anyone would be unaware of it, or not having experienced it
I'm from India, and chewing sugarcane like this is one of life's best experiences - true example of 'sweet is the reward of hard work'!
Tearing off the peel with your teeth is hard work (and dentists nowadays warn against it), but man, when you chew the insides of it, that is so good.
Nowadays we use a knife to strip the outside shell/peel, and supermarkets also sell just the inside part cut to bite sized pieces.
And I have to say this - the couple of times I tried it with cane in Florida, it was not as sweet. Indian cane is far sweeter. Not sure of the reasons.
Edit: I came back to add, Sugarcane juice is another fantastic product of cane: a direct hit of sugar to your palate that in the right conditions (on a hot, dry summer day, for example) is orgasmic. It's sold all over India and the Caribbean, and is worth experiencing at least once (and then you're hooked)!

u/tikketyboo 8d ago
When I visited west Africa, the sugarcane was a great treat as well. The imported cane in the UK was dried out and bland. So disappointing.

4
u/StaffVegetable8703 8d ago
Is there cartilage/a wall separating each side of the nostrils like humans or is it connected?
3
u/vexillifer 8d ago
So, pinch your septum gently between your thumb and index finger. You’ll notice at the bottom there’s an area where the cartilage basically ends and it’s just a fleshy wall between the two nostrils. That’s where you (or a bull) get pierced. It doesn’t go through the cartilage at all
→ More replies (1)8
u/rocka_rolla 8d ago

u/chintakoro 8d ago

18
u/MiniMeowl 8d ago
Different types of cattle. The cows with ear tags do not do labour. These buffalo are used as labour to till the land or carry items. The farmer needs more control over their direction.
Originally it was to control large bulls hence the name bull nose ring. Humans have always found ways to best control animals.
