This guy came to my command to talk to us once. Really sweet guy, super humble. I was already so disillusioned with the military that if I hadnāt wanted to get out before, hearing his story and seeing what the military industrial complex did to such a sweet young man, definitely made it more clear. No denying his courage, though, or what an incredible person he is!

Didn't his GF dump him because his face was pretty disfigured. That's this story or another one with a solider who lost his face.

I believe he may be total blind? Because yeah i remember seeing him get awarded the medal of honor and he has had a plethora of reconstructive surgeries since. Also about the top comment trump was basically talking about this dude and the other MOH recipient when he said they were weak and shouldnt have came home because his appearance was intense and caused pause.

u/Tandy2000 7d ago
He was like 21 when this happened IIRC and his girlfriend was like the same age. I know that's an adult but at the same time, when you are 21, you're basically still a child. It's disgusting that he was even over there in the first place and that the US was spending years fucking up the Middle East and throwing young people like him into it for nothing but its own financial interests.
His girlfriend was young and did not sign up for a lifetime of being a caretaker. She had every right to leave him and it's a good thing she did rather than being stuck in a relationship taking care of him and ending up resenting him. Leaving in that situation might seem cruel to you but it's normal and understandable. What's disgusting is the people who spend decades building a life with someone, get married and agree to be with them in sickness and in health, and then leave when they get sick/disabled. But they were both young and for all we know they'd been together for like a year. Could you imagine dating someone for a year, they jump on a grenade, and you feel like you're locked in to taking care of them for the rest of your life?
He met someone else and is married now so it's not like he missed out on anything.
57
u/smokeustokeus 7d ago
I remember this story about a guy who was like back on leave whilst serving and he's like 20 and can get a drink and he said "well by that logic we send children off to war" and that always stuck with me
230
u/blegoraththewretched 7d ago
Some people aren't built to be in a relationship like that. Not every soldier has their "soulmate" waiting for them when they get back home. It's pretty common for relationships with soldiers serving overseas to end when they come home regardless of the physical condition of the returning soldier.
It's actually kind of fucked up to think that someone must stay in a romantic relationship with someone they are not attracted to and possibly physically repulsed by.
Does it suck? Yes. Does it make the person breaking up a piece of shit? No, not necessarily.
Is it your place to be a judgmental asshole about people's relationships that you have literally no clue about? No, it isn't.

u/Liawuffeh 7d ago
It's actually kind of fucked up to think that someone must stay in a romantic relationship with someone they are not attracted to and possibly physically repulsed by.
Not to mention how much it changes you mentally. In a lot of cases it's almost literally not the person you married before they left.
It sucks, for everyone. The person you fell in love with is just...gone. Just so some guy who's never so much as had to throw a punch can make a few bucks and get praised for bringing "Freedom" to the world.
79
u/SteveJavieWasRight 7d ago
Falling in love with someone at like 18 is not a commitment anyone should expect to survive any real adversity. These women barely know these men. Relationships fail after 3 years of spending all their time together all the time without any real adversity. Just because something bad happens to your partner doesnāt mean a woman owes it to that man to stay with them.

To be more accurate... this is U.S. Marine Corps Corporal William Kyle Carpenter. The details of his action are correct (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Carpenter). He won the Medal of Honor at 24. He is the youngest LIVING recipient of the award. He isn't the youngest ever recipient of the MoH. That goes to Jacklyn H Lucas, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacklyn_H._Lucas) - who was 17 when he won the MoH.
Both are very worthy of the award.

My favorite thing about Jack Lucas is after the war he went and finished high school. He would occasionally wear his medal of honor to school. Could you imagine being this guyās teacher, knowing heās a war hero who has killed multiple men and seen the horrors of war and youāre supposed to give him detention for not listening lol
17 Also kind of undersells it too. He enlisted at 14 and earned his medal of honor on Iwo Jima just six days after his 17th birthday.
51
u/MisunderstoodPenguin 7d ago
This is basically my dad. He lied about his age to get into Vietnam, I dont think he was quite 14 but I think either 15 or 16, and became a Frog Man (the precursor to the navy seals).

I can imagine some of his teachers would have no problem disciplining him- it was after WW2. Many of them would've served, and at least some would've seen combat.
What a crazy time it would've been growing up after the war with so many combat vets just quietly living their lives again. I'd hate to be a student, I wouldn't get away with shit lol
26
u/redditman3943 7d ago
Actually, he was discharged and back stateside before most veterans had a chance to re-enter the workforce. It also seems he only went back to high school for one year and then graduated. I couldnāt find any information on it, but I imagine they had him on some sort of accelerated program. Or maybe it wasnāt that official because it was 1946.
He only went back to school because he promised his mom he would. He was basically an adult in everything but name and chose to go to high school. He wasnāt there to mess around and only went to school for one more year before he graduated. At this point he was a well disciplined marine so I doubt he was a behavioral issue anyway. Not to mention he was basically a celebrity who was well respected and beloved by everyone.

u/Wittt461 7d ago
To be even more accurate⦠the youngest MoH recipient is Willie Johnston who was awarded the MoH at 13 for refusing to leave his drum during a retreat in the Civil War.

I've heard in recent years he struggled with alcohol issues, which I have too but I'm doing better. I hope he is aswell.

51
u/WiseP7935 7d ago
Thank you for your well wishes; I'm much better these days. I come from a family of alcoholics and I didn't have purpose when I joined the military, I just didn't know what else to do. So, when I left, I lost what little I had and spent around 6 years drinking heavily because I felt like I'd lost what little purpose I'd found there. I joined a fire department in 2018 after college and that more than anything else helped me get sober.

I realized as I've gotten older that Republicans love Trump because he gave them an out to be racist and heartless in public without as much criticism. They were always racist at heart, but didn't have the courage to show it openly until Trump came along.
You see the people cheering on the crowd when he said let Iran bomb LA and San Francisco? Unhinged stuff, but Republicans thrive off hurting others.
83
u/lollmaohahahaha 7d ago
Earlier today i asked a republican why they voted for trump and defended him while hes a convicted rapist and probably a big part of the epstein trafficking ring. His response was to go on a rant about how democrats are pure evil and that they "imported millions of illegal aliens to rape and murder thousands of young american girls every day." And then proceded to type out a shopping list of ICE data without a source.(not that ICE would even be a reliable source)
They are a brainwashed cult.

Could have sworn there was another person who was the youngest to receive the MOH
Edit: William J. Johnston[1][a] (July 12, 1850 ā September 16, 1941) was a drummer boy in Company D of the 3rd Vermont Infantry during the American Civil War. When his division was routed during the Seven Days Battles during the Peninsula Campaign of June to July 1862, he was the only drummer to come away with his instrument. His superiors considered this a meritorious feat, given that the regiment's other soldiers had thrown away their guns and equipment to lighten their loads as they retreated. As a result, he received the Medal of Honor in 1863; at age 13, he remains the youngest recipient of the award.

78
u/Incorrect-Opinion 7d ago
Financial Benefits:
-$1,619 monthly, taxāfree pension (adjusted annually).
-$1,000 monthly supplemental VA pension if enrolled in VA care.
-Annual clothing allowance.
Medical & Travel Benefits:
-Priority treatment at VA medical facilities.
āLifetime access to military commissaries and exchanges.
-Priority, spaceāavailable military air travel.
Ceremonial & Honorary Benefits:
-Invitations to presidential inaugurations and official military events.
-Full military burial honors, including eligibility for Arlington National Cemetery.
-Children eligible for appointment to U.S. service academies without quota restrictions.
Other:
-Lifetime recognition and ceremonial responsibilities as a national hero.
22
u/singlemale4cats 7d ago
Make it 10k tax-free per month, adjusted up for inflation monthly. No one who has done something to get themselves the Medal of Honor should ever be in a position where they consider selling it, nor should they end up on the street.
12
u/Decent_Pen_8472 7d ago
No medal intended for honorable conduct should be sought purely for financial reward. And besides, you thinking like this shows you don't understand how pensions work. The award itself gives X amount of money a month. The officer receives his military pension, which is certainly high because he is a captain, on top of the medal of honor pension.

So it's not bad PR when a VA fails them and they have a "accident" cleaning their service piece.

Is that even possible?

Dad told me that helped bring blood to a surgery that lasted for half a day. Crushed pelvis. They made a hospital record by pumping 9 liters of blood to the patient during the surgery. Patient survived.
For the record, human body has around
3-45 liters in it...There was a suicide bomber in afghanistan and one of the soldiers that got caught in the blast got hit by 150 ball bearings. Apparently army guidelines stated that 60 of his wounds were not survivable. He had 45 surgeries and is still talking about.(Abbey gate, Tyler Vargas-Andrews)

I thought the average human had like 5.5 liters? I kinda remember that from when I used to donate blood.

Theyāre probably bleeding a lot during surgery, so until all the main arterial bleeds are stopped they may require a constant transfusion I reckon

I was at Walter Reed MMC with Kyle, Iām also a Marine who was wounded in Afghanistan. Iāve had over 60 surgeries there before I was medically retired, many other guys have had close to or over 100 depending on their injuries. 40 is on the lower side for bomb blast trauma.

No, you can have a maximum of 39 surgeries. Having 40 is like going faster than the speed of light, and violates the laws of reality.
Do you have any more stupid questions?

Didn't that 17 year old boy earn one from ww2? The one that just had a ship named after him, or was that something different?

The man featured in the post is William Kyle Carpenter, a retired United States Marine Corps Corporal whose extraordinary story of selflessness and resilience has made him widely regarded as a real-life hero. The Heroic Act On November 21, 2010, then-Lance Corporal Carpenter was providing security on a rooftop outpost during a patrol in Marjah, Afghanistan, when Taliban forces attacked their position. An enemy hand grenade was thrown onto the roof near Carpenter and his fellow Marine, Nick Eufrazio. Without hesitation, Carpenter threw his body over the live grenade to shield his comrade from the direct blast. The explosion took the full brunt of his body armor and severely wounded him. Recovery and Resilience * Severe Injuries: The blast caused catastrophic injuries, including losing his right eye, shattering his jaw, fracturing his right arm, collapsing a lung, and peppering his body with shrapnel. * The Fight to Live: He flatlined multiple times and spent five weeks in a medically induced coma at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. * Rehabilitation: Over the course of three years, he endured around 40 surgeries and extensive reconstructive procedures to rebuild his face, jaw, and body. The Medal of Honor On June 19, 2014, President Barack Obama presented Kyle Carpenter with the Medal of Honorāthe United States' highest military decorationāmaking him the youngest living recipient of the award at the time. Despite the immense physical trauma he survived, Carpenter medically retired from the Marine Corps and went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina, run marathons, and become an inspirational public speaker focused on perseverance and mental health.

This always seemed like a no brainer to me.
If a grenade is close enough where you can jump in it, youāre fucked anyway. Youāre dead either way- be the hero rather than another corpse. Of course you have to have this conversation with yourself before hand- I think the natural instinct is to run away from danger.
That said- there was an English(?) soldier who did this but jumped back first and landed on it with his backpack and survived with very minor injuries.

I've had a genuine question about this kinda thing for awhile. Could you put your helmet on the grenade and stand on it? Are those helmets strong enough to catch that kind of shrapnel?

Point of information: that is not a photograph of Jacklyn H Lucas, so, no, whoever that is is not the youngest MOH recipient.
