He aways cared about animals. He wanted you to adopt and not shop and support your local shelters.

He also bought a ship that patrols the oceans to help stop illegal fishing in international waters.

May his memory be a blessing
Sea Shepherd is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Bob Barker - one of the greatest animal advocates whose name is synomous with many of our proudest achievements, all of which he made possible.
Over his 99 years, Mr. Barker’s work, love, and generosity helped save the lives of countless animals, and in 2009, he helped Sea Shepherd secure a new vessel to help us in our successful fight to save the whales of Antarctica.
The acqusition of the My Bob Barker, signalled the beginning of the end of illegal whaling fleets in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you, Bob, and tomorrow the ships of the Sea Shepherd fleet shall fly their flags at half mast for you.

The M/Y Bob Barker is part of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation fleet. An eco organization committed to safeguarding the Oceans natural resources (predominantly whales and anti-poaching) Barker donated $5M to fund the purchase of the ice-class vessel which enables the Watson crews to follow Japanese whaling vessels into protected waters in an attempt to thwart their illegal hunting activities in a marine sanctuary

He also helped finance the transfer of the elephants from the Toronto zoo to a sanctuary in California.
All parties involved agreed the elephants should be moved as forcing them in doors in a small enclosure for winter was cruel. But no one would agree on paying for it, not the Toronto zoo or the sanctuary or any of the animal rights groups that were pushing it.
Bob stepped up and paid for it all so the elephants could avoid another winter up here.

Yep. Like most people, he was complicated, with both good and bad traits and behavior. The bad should be called out alongside the good.
He was also a serial sexual harasser of female employees

He did it so Happy Gilmore couldn’t sue his estate for damages after getting his ass kicked at the Pro Am
605
u/CatalinaBigPaws 2d ago
That is a misleading claim. He left his fortune to animal charities and rescues but also to some veteran organizations as well.
This implies he died penniless rather than explaining how he set up his estate to be divided after his death.

He was also pretty racist. The allegations are myriad and you kinda just need to watch an episode with a black contestant to see it happen.

Every person is a lot of things.

We have too low of standards if we’re proud of this guy.
2
u/LickyBoy 2d ago
You can support the good things and condemn the bad things at the same time. We should support millionaires giving their money away at death. We should condemn sexual assault. It's not a lack of standards, it's refusing to create a one size fits all perspective on society or a singular person.

Bob must have had a very good PR team, because even though he was an animal lover and animal rights supporter, he treated his cast with racial bigotry and misogyny. He may have been “beloved", but only by the people who did not know of his disgusting practices on-set.

The wording is ridiculous. Everyone with a will/trust that states where their assets go has a net worth of zero upon death. Without the legal docs, his estate would have the assets until it gets doled out, then his net worth would be zero. Why make it sound like he died broke?

u/station_agent 2d ago
He was also a racist and rapist who sexually harassed and assaulted and mentally tortured the female presenters and assistants. He was evil. Fk Bob Barker

It's called buying forgiveness. It's what a lot of creepy old people do because they've been convinced their entire lives by shady religious crackpots that buying your way to heaven isn't only possible, it's traditional. You can be as vile as you want during your life, it's just a line item expense once you're gone for everyone to forget it.
And in their defense, it works every fucking time.
2
u/Embarrassed-Weird173 2d ago
It's not really buying forgiveness if he's dead. I have no use for my money when I'm dead. Might as well as give it to druggies than the government.

His efforts to control stray dog, cat population is admirable.
His racism and history with the females greatly diminishes this legacy.

How was the money distributed? Did it go to one specific shelter or organization?
This story reminds me of a local rich man who loved a local animal shelter so much, he gave his millions to it in his will. The shelter in question didn't need the funding. It was one of the most funded shelters in the county, while others received much less. I volunteered at one of them when I was younger. It was heartbreaking to see the massive difference between the two shelters. I used to imagine what the other shelters would look like had they gotten the guy's millions distributed between them.
I'm not trying to dictate how people choose to spend their wealth. I'm just venting about where some rich people choose to have it go versus where it could really do some good. Would've been nice if the big local shelter gave some of that money to other shelters.
