It's gotta be a sheep this time, otherwise it'd count as a repost.

This is cute, but I’m a little shaken that I don’t know the difference between a goat and a sheep

You can tell it’s actually a goat by the way the tail stands up. A sheep’s tail (unless docked) hangs down.

I'm afraid to ask.... Docked?

Like some dogs. Put a ligament like a strong rubber band around it, it atrophies and falls off, supposedly (I'm not commenting either way) easy and painless if done when very young.

Is that the only difference?

4

u/AdministrativeLeg14 22h ago

No, but (a) it’s one of the easiest and most obvious differences, (b) it’s very objective (no need to handwave and say it looks more goat-like in the face), and (c) …I’m not that good at this, and it’s the one easy criterion I knew off the top of my head.

Apparently another difference is that sheep, but not goats, have a distinct philtrum dividing their upper lip, which is more helpful from the front, but I must admit that I read that just now. There are others. In the video, I looked for the tail because it’s easy.

Not all sheep have wool. Hair sheep are very common. A sheep is way fucking more likely to freak out like this than a goat. Goats are generally more friendly toward people.

Easiest tell: goats = shorter tail up, sheep = longer tail down

Oh a sheep definitely would. I haven’t worked with sheep too much but the work I have done with them absolutely convinced me they are the dumbest. Watched one give birth to her lamb at night in the cold, she managed to position herself with her backside to the pen gate so that her lamb would be born on the other side of the gate. Outside, on cold wet concrete, while she lay and munched on straw on her nice thick bed. Luckily we did the rounds every hour even at night and found the poor little lamb quickly enough. Mum didn’t give a flying F.

Lmao. Got it. I arrived to that assumption from those pesticide dunk videos lol

I cannot stress enough how stupid they can be. I cannot decide whether they are dumber by themselves or in a group. But peak dumbness is when one sees her group and wants to get back to them. They’ll leap out of trailers, get stuck in a ditch (though my horse did that once too), tip their water bucket or poop in it 30 seconds after it got changed because it was empty/had poop in it… one we had to cut a hole in the bottom of a bucket to use as a cone of shame because she’d be fine with her lamb when she couldn’t see it, but the sight of it filled her with fury. Every few hours my job was to catch her, put the bucket on for an hour so the lamb could feed, then I’d have to catch her AGAIN (but it was easier cause I could sneak up on her) to remove the bucket, and then it was a race to the gate to avoid her angry horns. God I hated that sheep.

Phew that's gotta be fuckin scary for a sheep to wake up away from it's flock

22

u/BurningCandle_ 22h ago

Or wake up and find you got turned into a goat

1

u/upstartpantymerchant 13h ago

Nah that probably wouldn't be scary cause that's basically the same thing anyway

Nitpicking, but just say they. Hell, OP called the goat a sheep, you won't get stoned for misgendering it.

If you can't tell the difference between a goat and a sheep you shouldn't be posting here
