Discussion Monthly Recommendation Megathread

Welcome to the monthly recommendation request thread! Please use this thread to make requests for series to buy or read. I urge everyone to try to be specific when making requests as it will be easier for us to recommend a series that you would enjoy.

Lastly, I recommend everyone skims through previous requests as someone else might have asked for something you were looking for as well! This would help us keep comments to a minimum/avoid multiple submissions of the same nature.

Looking for series with physical English releases with either of these:

  • Sci-Fi that takes place in space, with visits to multiple different planets.
  • Slice of Life with a heavy focus on a very specific hobby/interest that is not sports or a game (example (without a physical English manga release unfortunately): Ruri Rocks with minerals)

Took a stab at slice of life. Not sure if these are focused enough though as it’s been a while since I last read them.

  • Bakuman - Manga
  • Genshiken - Anime/Manga
  • Beauty Pop - Hairstyling
  • W Juliet - Acting
  • Voice Over Academy - Voice acting
  • Wotakoi - Anime/Manga

These I haven’t actually read but watched the anime:

  • Barakamon - Calligraphy
  • Blue Period - Painting

Thank you very much for the suggestions! I own and have read Bakuman, Genshiken, Wotakoi and Barakamon. Genshiken is one of my favorite manga of all time, but I'd say not quite focused enough for this "request" while Bakuman definitely is.

Will definitely check out the rest, Especially Blue Period seems very interesting to me, already added it to my cart for my next order.

Awesome! I think probably Bakuman is the most focused of the ones I listed but I have hopes for Blue Period too. I liked the anime well enough and sounds like the manga is more focused on the artwork.

Some follow up thoughts:
W Juliet - Probably more focused on the shojo drama than the acting itself, but the acting is technically the main driver of the plot.
Voice Over Academy - The main goal is for the MC to improve her voice acting. I haven’t read too much of this one yet though.
Beauty Pop - I recall there being hair/makeup styling battles. But I don’t recall if they went into skills/techniques or just show off the final products.

Thank you for the extra info! I'll have to keep an eye out for them since they aren't as readily available anymore as Blue Period.
