New here? 👆👆PLEASE READ THIS STICKY👆👆 Welcome to the sub! Posts about pot and it's related subjects should be shared with our good friends at r/trees, not so much here; we're all about *actual trees* (that's the joke) 😊🌳 'Thank you! Come Again!'

Good day everyone! I'm trying out some new automod skilz and they seem to be operating okay, at this time anyway. That said, few things are 100% the first go, but I'll keep checking the mod log to see if posts have been yeeted that shouldn't have been, and reinstate them in as timely a fashion as possible. Please use the 'Message the Mods' link in the sidebar to contact us directly, not the comment box in this post. =)

Hopefully these new settings will reduce the content not meant for this sub, but if any slip through, I know I can count on you good people to help direct them to the right place with the positive humor intended between our two subs as you always have done. We're lucky to have you!

Any (genuinely) helpful suggestions are always appreciated, and thanks for your patience and kindness with the newbs! 😃

UPDATE:

Today's 11/10/22, it's been a little over a month since the automod tweaks (10/8/22) and I'm rather pleased with the results. There's still some 'bleed through' posts from new redditor potheads, and I believe I've miraculously found a good balance between the ones that are snagged by automod and actual tree posts that I have to go back and approve. Mod reports, I'm relieved to say are much more manageable than they were.

Thank you all for your patience while I tried this out! While it does appear to me to be the case, I hope you're still as happy here as you ever were 😊🌳💗

Visited this giant american sycamore today. This is the largest tree in Massachusetts and it's hard to capture the size of it in photos. Estimated to be around 350-400 years old. It's amazing to think of all the change that has occured around this thing during it's lifetime. When this was seeded it was likely in a forest with a dirt footpath passing by it. Beautiful and awe inspiring tree.

Saw this huge sassafras today in WV. 50ft and maybe 16-18 inches in diameter. They are my favorite tree and I worry that one day they will be impacted by ambrosia beetles in the US as it warms up. I appreciate that I get to see big ones like this and for the unique character they provide.

Help! Help identifying bonsai start

Thumbnail

I’m pretty new to the bonsai community and bought this start thinking it was a Brazilian rain tree at first. Got home and quickly realized it’s not, however after several hours on Google, I’m having no luck. I’m thinking Lignum Vitae (??) but idek if that’s a species and I can’t find much bonsai info on it if it is. But I’m also leaning away from that because it has these thorns/stipules at the base of the leaves that Lignum Vitae doesn’t have. Any help identifying and or providing photos of yours (because mine is so tall and I’d have no idea where to start shaping) would be helpful!

Help! Live Oak pruning

Thumbnail

I planted this Live Oak last year and waited to do any pruning until it was established, but now I think it's time to remove the two lower branches that are growing at a sharp angle. The problem is they make up like half of the tree's canopy, especially the big one on the left. Should I just remove one and then wait until next year? Or is there a better approach to removing them?

Help! Why does my big oak tree only produce tiny acorns?

Thumbnail

Each year this big oak tree only produces tiny little acorns. At first I thought it didn’t have acorns at all until I looked closely at the ground. The tree is located on the sidewalk next to the street, in the California Bay Area. It gets plenty of sun and doesn’t have any other obvious infirmities. It’s about 2 feet in diameter (maybe more).

Is this due to lack of nutrients, or lack of sufficient water? Or is it because there aren’t enough other oaks in the area so it can fertilize? Or just an issue with older trees?

When this ginkgo tree was just a baby, there were two trunks and I twisted them together. The tree looks healthy, but I wonder if me doing that might cause damage down the road?
