Film/Television Avengers: Age of Ultron Is Such An Underrated MCU Movie 🥲

A lot of people complained about Ultron making jokes. Yeah, that's different than the comics, but the internet wasn't around when Ultron was created in the comics. In the MCU Ultron is an AI trained on the internet with some of Tony's personality mixed in. I think that makes the way Ultron is portrayed perfect.

And also to make full use of Spader.

I actually think Spader was a bad casting choice.

I mean Tony created Ultron.... So jokes are included in the package

u/that_guy2010 1d ago

I don’t think they made it clear enough that Ultron is based heavily on Tony.

You should try paying attention instead of staring at your phone. It was not even remotely ambiguous.

1

u/that_guy2010 7h ago

It was perfectly clear to me. General audiences are the ones who didn’t get it.

Came here to post this. Complaining about his sense of humor is an absolutely brain dead take and I’m glad people are finally figuring out, only took over a decade.

seriously. i dont know why people thought it was bad. Great villain, great action, wanda, quicksilver and vision introduced.

I feel this way about most movies that the internet band wagons on trashing.

Me: [enjoys tv show, movie, or video game] Damn this is pretty good. I really like it! I wonder what the people on the internet are saying, I’d really like to talk about this thing.

Reddit/social media/the internet et al: THAT THING IS DOGSHITTTTTT. Literal shit from a butt. Ass cheeks. Why is it so badddd?

lol oh okay

Joss Whedon being the answer. The quippyness and out of place humour is taken too far and doesn't work. Ultron doing it all the time is especially egregious

3

u/SmoothTalkingSpud 12h ago

I don't buy this. Buffy, Angel, Firelfly and the first Avengers movie are all quipy and beloved.

0

u/Golem30 9h ago

It's not so much the quips in themselves it's that they barely landed in Ultron

1

u/SmoothTalkingSpud 9h ago

They landed for me. Honestly sounds like confirmation bias, for either side to be honest. I was expecting to enjoy them, so I did. Others based on word of mouth, expected not to, so they didn't.

Age of Ultron is underrated. The action scenes are fantastic, especially Hulk vs. Hulkbuster.

People just got too caught up in the trailer portraying a different movie, tonally, that they didn’t want to accept the movie as it actually was. Which, I mean, somewhat fair, but it’s been over a decade, now. That’s not to say the movie itself is flawless, far from it, but it’s at least quite good and a fun watch overall.

That's probably what got Iron Man 3, too.

I totally agree!!! To me, Avengers Age of Ultron will always be better than the first Avengers film. There, I said it.

I will never forget the dialogue between Vision and Ultron at the end of the film. So good. "They're DOOMed. Yes. But a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts"

12

u/MildlyChaoticGremlin 1d ago

The fact this was considered a mid film at release... we didn't know how good we had it

I enjoy it, but it is somewhat messy compared with the Avengers movie before and the Avengers movies after.

The Black Widow/Hulk thing just... does not work at all and is easily the worst part of the movie. It feels like the Joey/Rachel pairing in Friends where they just ran out of ideas and inorganically wedged it in. Every time I see this movie I just kind of tune out during those scenes as they feel really faked and pointless on top of feeling pretty awkward. If they had cut this subplot the movie would have been better for it.

Overall the story is kind of all over the place and not particularly sharp. Ultron is great and god bless James Spader, but Ultron's motives seem kind of one-dimensional and flat. Wanda, Vision, and Quicksilver made me VERY happy as a huge Maximoff fan. I hate Quicksilver being killed off so fast but can live with it for story purpose as it does become a rather defining thing for Wanda.

While I LOVE the Maximoffs and Vis being introduced and LOVE Ultron, I am not sure Ultron pairing with the Maximoffs feels like it is needed. I feel like the movie would largely work better if the villain was either Ultron OR the Maximoffs. Having Klaw as a 4th villain in the mix just futher overloads it, and the Ultron bots in there means there are basically 5 villains and none are being used very effectively. The combination just kind of reminds me in a bad way of the Batman movies where there are too many villains and there's no real reason to have several other than maximizing the nerd boner.

The Hulkbuster sequence is WONDERFUL and probably the best part of the movie... but it also is kind of unneeded. Yea; it's cool as fuck, but in a movie way overloaded with 5 villains, do we really need an entire 10 minute action sequence of Avengers fighting Avengers? It's basically making Hulk a 6th villain for 10 minutes. I am certainly glad it is there, but it is an example of how this movie haphazardly tries to cram way too much in.

It doesnt help that phase 2 started off with the equally messy Iron Man 3 and Thor: Dark World, and then spiked the ball with Winter Soldier and Guardians 1 right before this. This movie coming after two incredible highs just make it feel somewhat disappointing. The highs of phase 2 are VERY high, the rest feels a bit muddled and messy, and this movie really represents how up and down phase 2 was as a whole.

Admittedly the bar is set rather high for Marvel, especiallly as I am a huge comic fan and have been reading and loving Marvel for about 40 years. It gets a lot right, but it also lands awkwardly with a lot of what it does and ends up feeling like a B- for me.

At least we got Evan Peters back in WandaVision. Aaron Taylor Johnson just didn't make an impression on me

2

u/justagayguyinnyc 1d ago

I LOVED ATJ being announced at the time, as I very much enjoy him.... but yea; his Quicksilver is rather flat and unmemorable. The script is much more interested in him as plot device for Wanda than it is interested in him as a character.

I felt the Joey and Raquel pairing was to show bad they were as a couple to push her back to Ross.

I dont mind the BW/Hulk story. When you spend that much time together you’re bound to find pairings.

1

u/Omega_Hertz 14h ago

I felt the same way about BW/Hulk, but upon rewatching Avengers 1, it sort of clicked. BW was absolutely terrified of Banner. She was cool on the outside but freaking out internally. When he finally transformed, chased her, and then hurt her...I don't think she recovered from that. In AoU, I think its a cool way to show that she learned to "literally" control her fear, and help Banner in the process using subliminal spy techniques. And from all that off screen training, I'm sure feelings would've developed. Maybe not 100% romantically, but something.

2

u/Present_Bad3896 1d ago

Natasha and Bruce’s weird dialog is the only thing that hurts this movie.

4

u/Spare_Perspective972 1d ago

It’s my favorite one. Most like an avengers comic and Ultron is my favorite villain.

2

u/Dangerous_Dot_1638 1d ago

I’ll put it this way if in a few months from now we are comparin this movie to doomsday I will be so happy and I will consider marvel back.

The only thing I dislike about this movie is the way ultron plans to destroy the earth just cause I find it so boring. Oh let me make a big giant rock that’s gonna hit the earth even though I have access to all the nukes. Other than that this movie really couldn’t have been any better.

4

u/impuritor 1d ago

He didn’t have access to all the nukes. Jarvis was stopping him from accessing them.

2

u/Dangerous_Dot_1638 1d ago

Oh you’re right I am probably gonna rewatch this movie soon.

3

u/gambito121 1d ago

my headcanon is that the information available in his database is that the biggest extinction-level event in history was a big rock falling down onto Earth, while there's no field-tested evidence that nukes would result in such a catastrophe.

2

u/Dangerous_Dot_1638 1d ago

Yeah but even still I feel as if you could do it so much more in an interesting way. Even if you are gonna stick to that idea.

2

u/PatientTelephone4624 18h ago

To be fair, Ultron did say he liked meteors more.

He likes the purity of them, probably more than the man made Nukes.

1

u/MandoDelorian 10h ago

Dropping a massive rock makes a real statement, it's Biblical.

Popping the nukes is so "Bond villain".

2

u/YogSothothOfficial 1d ago

BOOM! You lookin’ for this?

1

u/DM-777 1d ago

Biggest issues are that Thor’s subplot feels tacked on and messy/doesn’t really make a whole lotta sense and Black Widow/Hulk just flat out doesn’t work.

People at the time didn’t like how human Ultron felt as well and REALLY didn’t like him making jokes.

These aren’t huge problems (and Ultron isn’t a problem at all imo) but compared to the original Avengers movie they stood out as that one doesn’t have a single ounce of fat on it haha

That being said, it was definitely overhated and it’s an incredibly fun follow-up to Avengers that gives us a few “average” moments with the team (which no other movies really do).

1

u/IAmActionBear 1d ago

At the time of release, I think it was just jarring to many. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the movie that was advertised.

The movie had a lot of narrative decisions that felt like they were intentionally designed to subvert expectations. Add in the fact that, if you had watched the Phase 2 movies, you’d also be rather surprised that the team has apparently been together long enough for a lot of things to have happened since we last saw them.

Watching it now, it ends up being the only Avengers movie where they were AvengersTM and I think that ended up causing the movie to age extremely well.

1

u/Ordinary-Chain-8047 1d ago

It’s in my top 10 MCU movies

1

u/Alive_Swede9492 1d ago

I heard just a few months ago how bad everyone thinks this movie is and now everyone's calling it peak cinema.

The duality of man.

1

u/KB_Sez 1d ago

I used to consider it one of the lesser MCU films but I rewatched earlier this year and enjoyed it a lot more. FAR, FAR from the bottom of the barrel of the MCU

1

u/Jermobooka X-Men 1d ago

Agreed. It’s probably the most “Avengers” Avengers movie we’ve gotten yet; and probably ever will get.

1

u/ObviouslyRealPerson 1d ago

More like Work Week of Ultron

1

u/Low_Sugar5182 1d ago

everyone hated it because the trailer made it seem like the movie was gonna be horror-esque. when it came out, it was nothing like how they promoted 😂

1

u/IceWizard57 Doctor Strange 23h ago

Me who’s Favoruite characters are Wanda and Vision 😃

(yes and Doctor strange but thats besides the point)

1

u/frockinbrock 17h ago

Bottom left... every time I see her at the end of the movie...that's the stunt double right? It can't be Olsen.

But I will agree, I LOVE this movie, and I think lots of fans seem to forget how foundational it is for SO much that comes later.

1

u/Halouva 14h ago

I rewatched it the other day and if you skip all of the Thor side plot and skim through the Wanda visions it gets to the point a bit better and is more enjoyable.

Instill think Ultron was too human and over designed.

1

u/devoid0101 13h ago

I think it’s the second best Avengers movie. The first best is Captain America Civil War.

1

u/devoid0101 13h ago

The way “agentic” AI has developed it actually tracks that sentient superintelligence like Ultron will be wise, sarcastic, philosophical and hallucinating. Ultron was a nemesis of Avengers for decades, he’s forever. Just like our own malevolent SI coming soon.

u/slinky317 12h ago

This along with Iron Man 2 aged like fine wine

1

u/SageofLogic 9h ago

I feel like it needed Joss to have a babysitter editor that fixed the few egregious things that did make it through

1

u/Kaznil 8h ago

It suffers from well known executive meddling.
Joss was clearly going for a psycho-thriller vibe but has to change and add bits and lessen the thriller bits.

u/borkborkbork99 1h ago

I posted this in a DC sub earlier today:

I just rewatched Age of Ultron last night and it was unabashedly leaning into the comic book superhero aspects. It’s not that I hated Lanterns, but I was disappointed that they shied away from giving the fans more of the spectacle they were hoping to see.

And it’s a shame Whedon turned out to be a dick and got banished from Hollywood, because his fingerprints are all over the movie and his little character touches are 99% great. Yes, there’s some shit that’s problematic like Tony mentioning Prima Noctae rights, or Banner falling into Nat’s cleavage, but the majority of it helped to balance the spectacle. And the humor was well done. Just watch Thor Ragnarok for an example of what happens when that’s out of balance with the rest of the movie.

The cinematography is atleast better than gray russo films

1

u/AdvertisingFew6224 15h ago

Best movie ever made!

-3

u/TrafficNo9010 1d ago

No it isn't. Its a pretty lackluster movie with a few Good things in it. MCU is just full of garbage

0

u/Aggravating_Cut_3985 1d ago

Not full of garbage but there are a few stinkers in there

-1

u/Aggravating_Cut_3985 1d ago

It's the weakest avengers movie. Whedon crammed in way too much.

0

u/Alternative_Bet6234 Thunderbolts 1d ago

Would’ve been better then avengers 1 if not for the stupid Natasha Bruce romance and just Natasha’s character assassination in general

0

u/_realLazyBones 1d ago

It’s the first true catalyst of the MCU. It sets up Civil War (aka Avengers 2.5) perfectly.

My only complaint is Ike Perlmutter trying to save money & not invite Silvestri back. Tyler/Elfman made a good new one-off theme, but it’s just not the true Avengers theme. Something feels off every time they face off against Ultron at the end and it isn’t the main theme (which of course plays as they cut to credits, lol).

u/Art_student_rt 1d ago

The Ultron we got wasn't the same as the trailer they showed us. And Ultron was a pushover

0

u/JesseJonasYT 1d ago

I Know right! I'm glad more people are coming around to liking it. I will say I wish they leaned more into the horror aspect of it, like they did in the trailers, but I'd still say it's a great movie. Also, I know Thanos did way more damage then Ultron, but even still I clicked way more with Ultron as a villain then Thanos.

I mean... The first is an AI entity that got access to the internet and all the horrors that comes along with it, so it built itself a body and decided that humanity needed to be reset. [Unrelated, but it's erily similar to what's happening IRL with our non-fictional AI models] The other is a powerful but delusional alien that saw suffering in the universe, and because of that suffering decided that his best course of action was to take hold of the universe's most powerful weapon that could have easily rewritten reality in ways to achieve his goals without committing cosmic genocide, he instead chose to [originally] kill half of all living things because he wanted to prove a point.

0

u/SortIntrepid9192 16h ago

It's not underrated or overrated. It's precisely as rated as it should be, namely that it's the worst Avengers movie but pretty okay for an MCU flick.

-1

u/chamcham123 1d ago

The What If Ultron episode was better.

2

u/GleamPearl_ 1d ago

Yet is it sad, coz he destroyed everything and felt lonely. The most heartbreaking when may is last remaining avenger in her universe
