This one was interesting but didn't gripr the way Spider-Man did.

So far I think this is the weaker of the three, pleasantly surprised with how I prefered Spider-Man over this. I think Percy having to work with introducing 4~5 characters off the bat just made it more unfocused.

An interesting set up. I think what strikes me is the relationship between Reed and Victor may be more of a tragedy than it is the stock rivalry in 616.
Especially since his mother is likely going to be filling those shoes rather heavily.

Felt like a lot of set up. Not bad at all, just not as not as intriguing as X-Men and not as committed as Spider-Man.

I really enjoyed this. I like Kev Walker's art a lot and I thought the reworking of the characters was interesting. I preferred this over Midnight X-Men (which will probably end up being the better book, but there was a lot of setup). I haven't read Midnight Spider-Man yet.

I actually find this just as intriguing as spiderman, but i have a scifi horror bias. So many references whether the thing, event horizon, etc im excited for the future

As someone wanting to get into comics, would the midnite runs be fine to get into since they're separate from main sort of story stuff? Or do u still need alot of previous info on characters

u/YourLocalDutchGuy 9d ago
Considering they're trying to copy the absolute universe's succes, I would assume these will be very stand alone

u/Unique_Fill_255 9d ago
Yh, I'd wait a bit anyway since not wanting get into buying single issues probs but defo keep a look out esp since seems nightcrawler is a big part of midnite x men and he's my fav x men character

I feel like the success is the only thing they’re trying to copy. Absolute is supposed to be versions of the known characters with the balance of the universe not in their favour, evil reigns supreme and they really have to fight their way to the top to overcome this evil as opposed to beating it down and keeping evil at bay.
Midnight universe just seems like a horror spin on the characters we know. I guess we’ll see how they all progress.1

My favourite one of the 3 so far.
This feels more like Absolute Fantastic 4 than what the other 2 interpreted Midnight as, which I'm fine with.
If I was making predictions I think this one will be the midnight series everyone praises most. Seems like its setting up a long run and it's got me most interested so far.

Agreed. I saw only the cover and a single panel and immediately thought "Oh, I see what you did there... 😏"

I'm curious to know where this one goes. Feels a little less like it's main origin but twisted enough that it could be something more

This was so much fun. I didn't have high hopes for this but I really enjoyed it and want more. The art being Wieringo-esc was the cherry on top. I think it was much better than Spider-Man which felt completely predictable.

This was the one I was most interested in and I’m kind of underwhelmed. Wish it could’ve been longer. Having read all three id say my ranking would be Spidey, X-Men, then this. None are bad so far

u/prose4jose 10d ago
Agreed. I felt like it moved the story a lot in very few pages but still didn’t get anywhere.

u/CrustyPeaNutt 10d ago
I’m a spidey fan usually but this one surprised me and became my favorite so far. I haven’t read X-men yet.

I haven't gotten to xmen yet but so far this is my number 1, the cut to latveria was literally so hype

u/0rangelantern 10d ago
Nice start, but I feel like it ended right before something could happen. Still, I feel like it established a clear and intriguing direction for the plot. Also, poor Victor. That looks agonizing.

This one has me the most interested in seeing where it goes but part of that is because it was the one that seemed to have the least in it. It felt like 5 pages of an older comic and I need to see the rest

I love all 3 books so far, but this one has me the most excited. Lovecraftian horrors for the Fantastic Four is such a cool concept, I really hope they do it justice!

u/Nguot 10d ago
the problem is the art, it just cannot make me feel horrified, it should be like those analog horror, should be more disorted and insane

Kev Walker can change his style quite a bit from cartoony to Mignolaesque. I'm surprised he didn't push it more in the latter direction.

I was leery about the whole line honestly but said I would try out all 3 to start. FF was the only one that grabbed me, a great start

I thought this was really good. Actually I thought all 3 were really good.
X-Men was probably my favorite of them, but I loved the Lovecraftian stuff in MFF. I do hope we get a little more of the sympathetic side of our protagonists though. So far, Reed is just a big loser, Sue is a terrifying Elon Musk figure, Ben is kind of just muscle so far, and Johnny is the only one who you feel any sympathy for at all.

u/hammylime 9d ago
Of the three this is the only one I’ve read so far, and I really liked it! I didn’t love the artwork and it felt like Sue, Ben, and Johnny were kinda shoehorned in, especially Johnny, but it’s difficult to introduce 4 new characters in one issue. I really like the Reed angle so far though

It was the one I found the most interesting reading it, but once I hit the end my response could be summarized by "Wait, that's it? You barely even did the set up!"
At least with Midnight Spider-Man he's getting his powers at the end of it. And with X-Men, where already into it from the start. But here?
I'm seriously afraid if the story goes this slow

u/superseri18888 8d ago
Though I agree with the complaints that the ending was kinda flat and this has a slower pace but I really enjoyed it
Whatever Victor ends up doing to reed, he had it coming.
Also I really like reeds design and I like the art style

Loved this first issue! Super interesting and I literally was angry that it was over. This and spidey were my favorite of the Midnight Series. I am so excited to see where this story goes. I love a greay slowburn. Can't wait for issue #2.

So far it’s my favorite of the three Midnight titles but I’m super into Eldritch/cosmic horror so I kinda expected that.
The spin on the characters (including hinting at Galactus being Cthulhu like) is all intriguing to me. Real curious what they do with Victor if Cynthia is going to be the actual Doctor Doom of this universe

u/Built4dominance 10d ago
Easily the weakest of the three books. Unimpressive art and an extremely unsympathetic Reed.

u/0rangelantern 10d ago
I agree that he is hard to like based on how he is presented here, but I'm sure there will be more layers to him. So far, he has no connection to these people. The art is not my favorite style though, which is a shame since I was super hyped from seeing the variant covers.

Percy's influences are so overt that it is distracting from what could have been one of his "most OK" books ever written. Its Twin Peaks. The nuclear explosion. The Ju-Dei .....opps I mean Galactus silhouette/blot. Also throw in was a liberal dose of Herbert West, Reanimator with the uncaring Reed and Victor's return.
I suppose its OK to be inspired by others works but this was a bit too on the nose.

some people say that this is their favorite book, some people (like me) say that it's the worst one. hate how reed is portrayed here
3
u/0rangelantern 10d ago
Is it the lack of emotion? I have a feeling he will be more humanized later as he grows closer with the other 3 (I hope). I think what he says to the dead bird is important, though "did you mistake a hard surface for the freedom of the sky" I think he is going to explore the negative zone out of curiosity only to find that there are some questions best left unanswered. Hopefully, that leads to him becoming more heroic.

i love how undisciplined they've made reed. the rest of the group aren't so fleshed out in this issue but i suspect reed is going to be the source of a lot of the toxic relationship dynamic they described.
MFF#1 is probably my favourite of the three series' out of the gate, with the acknowledgment that hickman's work tends to develop and unfold more slowly than other writers. i've also always had a soft spot for ben percy, his x-force and wolverine runs were some of my favourite parts of the krakoa era. can't wait to see where he goes with this series.

Interesting to see the responses below - I thought this was fantastic. It had a great balance of setup and "things happening" - I thought the same of Spiderman. I've not quite got to the X-Men yet, but I really enjoyed this.
I also hope these issues dispell the whole "It's just a rip off of the Absolute universe" chatter thats been around the last few months.
