The stuff that I wrote in Panic was also music that came into Megadeth. 'Rust in Peace: Polaris' is a Panic song, and 'Set the World Afire' is a Panic song.
Wait, what?

If I had to guess, he had the riffage written out, the lyrics and arrangement came later

Exactly yeah. If you compare the earliest recorded version of the song (when it was called "Megadeth" or burnt offerings IIRC, can't remember which one) it's pretty incomplete and rough compared to the final SFSGSW version. Sections are there but some other parts and subtleties are missing. Melody, tempo changes, drum parts etc. I think he speaks generally about these things to prove a point but the reality is just like Ride the Lightning it wasn't the final article

Yeah that’s all this ever really is. The way they write is to make a big bag of riffs, then they arrange the riffs. I think master of puppets alone had 9 unique sections, and each has at least one if not two or three riffs in it. It’s a lot for one song
Metallica is also famous for “never giving up on a song” for better or for worse, I think they’ve said it was until after the black album that they had songs they just didn’t use or gave up on. That was part of the problem with Load and ReLoad, they should have given up on half the ideas and made one great album
So when they say “I wrote this” they usually just mean like one riff out of a dozen got carried through the patchwork method of how these prog metal songs are put together
And they took riffs with them. Kirk Hammet brought one of his Exodus riffs with him too

💤💤💤💤. this is no shade to the pioneering music, success, impactful and influential run Dave Mustaine has had & accomplished . It is the truth and written in stone for all the future ages to know and understand.
But please 🙏 please, shut the fuck up already. I and pretty much every single one of us in this sub will never reach a tenth of the heights Mustaine has.

And still it is not enough, because Mustaine wants to claim Metallica's fame as well for himself. Which kinda undermines his own achievements when you think about it. He's forty plus years under his belt, but all he want to focus on is basically his five minutes of fame with Metallica.

Too bad the Megadeth version was released 30 years late and sounds the way it does.

When it was announced I thought it was a fun idea for a bonus track, and the way he talked about it sounded like he was paying tribute to them by picking a song that he only wrote part of. But the version they put together was kinda boring. I was hoping for Dirk to add some extra flair, maybe for the solo section to be extended and have some original solos trading off between Dave and Teemu. But no, it was just a very plain cover with some really flat production.

Pretty much. And combined with Dave's voice going downhill, it was completely underwhelming. Felt like he was covering a Metallica song.

When you write one riff, you basically have ownership of the song. So by that logic, Ride is Lars' song, given that he wrote the opening riff.

Don't know when this interview was done, but I figured all the Sphere coverage would get under his skin. Let it go Dave.

Ride the Lightning is obviously Dave's. It sounds like it could be on KIMB or Peace Sells

Yeah, not really no. RTL is a walk in the park compared to the stuff on KIMB.
I grant him the spider chord thing about that song, not much else, its to simple for the style he was playing back then.

Again with this, dude? +40 years and stills talks about that song, that it ain't even that good. If anything its good for warm-ups.

Imagine legacy of Metallica if instead of St. Anger they made an album co-written with Dave with normal drums

Appropriate response since Dave wrote the New Testament.

He actually had the idea for the new Testament before writing the old Testament.
In the beginning… There was Dave Mustaine
Who created the world in 6 days
And declared the 7th day…
the day of rust (in peace)

He played some of the songs in Panic.
