u/mgrier123 THE ONLY GOOD BAND IS MANOWAR 1d ago edited 1d ago

Lots of new stuff this week:

New Minenfeld continues to show that Minenfeld are the only good still active Bolt Thrower worship and WW1 themed band. The additional influence from Asphyx, and in particular stenchcore, really solidifies their quality and sound over the ilk of Kanonenfieber, and actually emphasizes the themes of the horrors of war. Also, they're explicitly anti-fascist and all their stuff is NYP on bandcamp. Love these guys.

Firebreather really are High on Fire but Swedish! The new one has a bit more doom to their sound than the prior one which was pretty straight forward HoF worship. Not quite as good as the new Restless Spirit, though I am biased, but quite good from them!

I'm very pleasantly surprised by the new Insomnium and I say this as a huge, huge fan of them. Argent Moon and Anno 1696 were enormous disappointments to me. Utterly boring with basically no redeeming qualities to either but this one is a big return to form for me. About as good as Heart but I'll need more listens. I was very worried the Omnium Gatherum guys had fully infected the band with Boringitis but it seems there's still life to them.

Pan-Amerikan Native Front dropped an EP this week for Indiginous People's Day and it rocked. Has some really nice black/punk moments to it and the production is still raw but audible. Probably my favorite thing they've done yet.

Still need to hit Night Hag, Lugubrious Garment, and Mannveira

Hey man I really appreciate the work you're putting in to the sub. I share a lot of your tastes and I usually give your recs a spin.

only good still active Bolt Thrower worship

The Chainsword fan in me takes massive offense at this, but yeah Minenfeld is indescribably solid. Albeit, I think with this particular release I'm leaning more in the Hail of Bullets FFO direction than Bolt Thrower per se.

The new Insomnium is really good. Probably my favorite melodeath of the year, and its been a pretty good melodeath year.

What other good melodeath you been digging? Other than Serpent Sun I've listened to almost no melodeath this year

I really enjoyed Fires in the Distance, Volcandra, Atavistia, and Brymir, off the top of my head.

That Insomnium record hit me right in the chest, they've still got it after all these years. Been playing it in the truck all morning and my old girl's speakers are finally getting a proper workout

New Veilburner is so good. I love that weird blackened/death vibe. Might be sneaking its way onto my AOTY

I really enjoyed Worm Altar's debut. Will be following this band more closely.

Bloodsoaked Necrovoid and Nekus put out a split that officially released today. Nekus leads with a monster 19 min track of crushing death/doom. Their tone is improved with more crunch and full body than it was before. Killer atmosphere and musical progression

Bloodsoaked Necrovoid return to form with similar sound and production as their EP from earlier this year. They have some super slow passages reminiscent of Expelled Into the Unknown Depths of the Unfathomable.

When I first saw the split lineup I thought it was going to be a weird pairing as I mostly listen to Sepulchral Divination by Nekus out of their discog and it has a weird take on death doom (I like it, it's just plodding and clangy). But the tracks these two bands produced together feel like a complete LP. Sick shit, listen here https://youtu.be/1mRZe5X64PE?is=29gwvUjHXaGMfi5M

Mannveira album is awesome. Icelandic BM has been on a tear this year.

I hadn’t heard of Minenfeld before but their new album is fucking incredible. No holds barred death metal. Love that album art too.

I was recommended Pan Amerikan Native Front a while back but had never dipped my toe in their stuff until the new EP that dropped. Really good black metal, love the overall production.

Lugubrious Garment is a goofy name ngl but this release is a pretty solid death metal release.

New Firebreather comes off a little less heavy overall than their previous couple albums but there’s not much to nitpick here. The stoner/doom riffs are big (surprisingly melodic) and super catchy.

Worm Altar is good death/doom. The last track, in particular, is a fantastic capper to the album.

I agree with Lugubrious Garment. I generally enjoy what Gabriele Gramaglia (Cosmic Putrification/Vertebra Atlantis) does. Super interesting songwriting, not particularly quite gritty enough for my usual death metal taste with a heavy touch on the production side. Nonetheless some very nice song structures, layered, and a bit of fascinating experimentation. I'm thinking this is going somewhere on my year end list, and it could be pretty high up.

Great Falls released a fantastic album if you're into noisy sludgy despair.

Been traveling today so I don’t have the time or energy to go any deeper than this but some cool stuff came out this week.

Good: Lugubrious Garment, Night Hag, Minenfeld, Mortify

Not particularly good: Worm Altar, Sepulcre
