[REC CENTER] Shreddit's Official Recommendation Thread [12/20]

Welcome to Shreddit's [REC CENTER] where we bring together all of the recommendation threads and try to just shout over everyone to find new bands. This is a combination of "If I like X then I'll like X threads" and also all of the rogue rec threads which pop up from newcomers. This thread will be around every 2 weeks to help everyone from novice to adept with new music recommendations.

Before we allow everyone to go mingle, please look at this introductory packet as it may answer some of your questions.

  1. Listen to the Blacklist bands -------------->
  2. Listen to this List

  3. Listen to records from 2016

  4. Listen to records from 2001 - 2015

Do you already know what you want to ask and nothing I just said applied? Then step right up post in the [REC CENTER]. While you are typing, allow me to remind you of good recommendation inquiry.

  • Look first before you type. Your question may already been answered by someone posing as you and trying to steal your life.

  • Be as specific as possible. "I would like more bands like Devin Townsend," or "Give me some more stoner doom from the 90's" or "Can I have some black thrash from Mongolia" all helps others give you better feedback. Do not just list random things you like such as " I like DevilDriver, Black Sabbath, Deiselboy, Call of Duty and Hotpockets...give me a band."

  • Give important information if you are already familiar with the genre. This is not a murder mystery dinner where one has to withhold vital information. If you post "Give me some more thrash" it might be important to mention "oh yeah, I already know Demolition Hammer, Hobbs Angel of Death, and Razor, otherwise you are getting Metallic'a first three albums and everything Slayer did in the 80's.

I’m looking for more bands similar to Abyssal and VRTRA. I really like how they blend Black, Death, and Doom Metal together.

I’m not really into Caverndeath but I like Chte’list, Dead Congregation and Cruciamentum because it’s not as “swampy” as Portal or Impetuous Ritual, it’s sorta like in-between old-school death metal and caverndeath if that makes sense.

I’m also not into Atmoblack but I really like Bathuska and The Ruins of Beverast, although I’d describe The Ruins of Beverast as more of Atmoblack and Doom Metal mix.

I can't help you but the new Rec thread will be posted within the next few hours. Ask again there and you'll probably get what you're looking for.

Any super riff-centric bands similar to Bolt Thrower? I think Amon Amarth and Children of Bodom are close, but not exactly fully centered on the riff like Bolt Thrower (or Iron Maiden) are. Any doom, death, or black metal bands that'll get riffs stuck in my head?

For death metal similar to Bolt Thrower:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Metal/comments/7l0zj1/rec_center_shreddits_official_recommendation/drjamnx/?context=10000

For riff-centric death in general (although most death is riff-centric, so... ¯_(ツ)_/¯):

  • Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence

  • Autopsy - Mental Funeral

  • Be'lakor - Stone's Reach (melodeath, since you said you were looking for melodic stuff)

  • Entombed - Left Hand Path

  • Incantation - Onward to Golgotha

  • Pestilence - Consuming Impulse

  • Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes

For doom (not very knowledgeable about this):

  • Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus; Nightfall

  • Magic Circle - Journey Blind

  • Trouble - Trouble AKA Psalm 9

  • Sleep - Sleep's Holy Mountain

For black:

  • Bathory - Bathory; The Return.......................................

  • Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales; Emperor's Return; To Mega Therion (if you really dig Celtic Frost check out the previous band Hellhammer, specifically Satanic Rites and Apocalyptic Raids)

  • Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky

  • Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm (or really any Inquisition album)

  • Kat - 666

  • Sabbat - Envenom

The Hellenic black metal scene is infamous for legendary riffs!

  • Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract; Non Serviam

  • Varathron - Walpurgisnacht

  • Agatus - The Eternalist

  • Zemial - In Monumentum

  • Kawir - Exilasmos (of the three Kawir albums I have heard, this is probably the most accessible. If you dig this, go back and check To Cavirs and Ophiolatreia. I have also heard good things about Isotheos and Father Sun Mother Moon)

Czech scene:

  • Root - Zjeveni; Hell Symphony

  • Master's Hammer - Ritual; The Jilemnice Occultist

If you dig the above two, listen as well to the Slovakian album Malokarpatan - Nordkarpatenland.

ALSO, the new Rec thread will be posted tomorrow morning. Ask in there again and you will get shitloads more answers from people more knowledgeable than me.

For the most part I am, but I'm looking for specifically very melodic and riff-centric bands from this list.

1

u/ThatDudeWhoSaysYes Jan 02 '18

I'm looking for bands that use both lower growling male vocals and clean female vocals I harmony for at least part of their songs. Thanks in advance.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '18

Beyond the Bridge, Flaming Row

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '18

The Slow Death, Shape of Despair

2

u/Worknewsacct Jan 03 '18

Draconic should be exactly what you're looking for. Doom/death with growling male vocals, clean femal vocals, and very melodic.

That describes Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear, so check that album out.

I'm after more like Swansong era Carcass?

Not everyone's favourite record I know, but I've really been digging this sound lately.

1

u/DayoftheDead Sub-Sub-Sub-Subgenre Jan 01 '18

Have you heard Barbed Wire Soul by Blackstar? Jeff and Ken's band after Carcass.

2

u/MetalSlasher Dec 31 '17

Anyone got something similar to the likes of Dethklok for me? So far the bands that come closest (at least in my opinion) are Amon Amarth and Arch Enemy in a few songs. I have also already checked stuff like Be'lakor, Mors Principium Est and Insomnium, which weren't what I was looking for.

Aaaand if anyone can recommend similar stuff to Shogun-era Trivium, but none of the obvious ones please (e.g. Machine Head, Killswitch, Devildriver etc.)

1

u/Worknewsacct Jan 03 '18

Bolt Thrower

1

u/metagloria Jan 02 '18

I mean, Galaktikon, for obvious reasons.

1

u/Noozooroo brain-damaged misanthropes on obscure internet forums Dec 31 '17

Dethklok, Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy

Melodic death metal is what you're looking for. Here's a primer.

2

u/MetalSlasher Jan 01 '18

I do realize it's melodeath lol, I'm a big fan of In Flames and do also enjoy stuff like Carcass and Dark Tranquillity, was just looking for that specific sound. But I guess I'll have to check through that list, thanks a lot tho!

1

u/Aresdesolation Dec 30 '17 edited Dec 30 '17

Lookin for new bands to listen to, currently listening mainly to Soen, DT, Empyrium,In Mourning, Soulfallen, early In Flames music, Nordic death bands and a huge fan of Belak'or,

would like to hear progressive-death bands that involve an atmospheric sound in their music or even some black metal related material (such as Alcest's) but i am open minded, thanks!!

1

u/metagloria Jan 02 '18

Persefone.

1

u/JohannLippowitz Dec 30 '17

1

u/Aresdesolation Dec 31 '17

Amazing, starting to like that after a few listenings

May i ask for a more ambient death/black metal? I like trees of eternity, empyrium and les discrets, if that helps

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '17

Is there any listen-worthy attempt of fusing Electronic and Metal together?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '18

I think this song is pretty good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWgon-a7qks

Disillusion's album Gloria comes to mind as well.

4

u/Aethe Dec 31 '17

I think so, but you should specify which subgenre of electronic, because electronic has the same relative scope of diversity as metal.

Chelsea Wolfe - Hiss Spun

Anaal Nathrakh - Desideratum

Mechina - Progenitor

Dawn of Ashes - The Crypt Injection

Ministry - The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste

3

u/Barnaby_Fuckin_Jones http://www.last.fm/user/Xache2112 Dec 30 '17

what kind of electronic?

1

u/Scizorking Dec 30 '17

Any bands with a similar feel to Megadeth?

4

u/targetpainter Dec 29 '17

I'm on the hunt for epic sounding doom metal. I adore Candlemass's first album, but to be honest the amount I love it kind of ruins their other ones for me. I'm looking for something with that same level of atmosphere, preferably with fantasy-themed lyrics and a wonderful vocalist. Any suggestions?

7

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '17

2

u/targetpainter Dec 30 '17

Thanks very much! I've been listening to Solstice, but haven't got into Atlantean Kodex - I love the atmosphere from that record though! Excellent recommendations!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '17

You'll like Atlantean Kodex as well then. There's also Scald, from Russia, but I don't really like them.

3

u/BirdsOfWisdom Dec 30 '17

Thank you so much, just had the same request in mind. Great recs. 🤘🏻

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '17

Solstice will release a new album in 2018, so stay on the lookout.

1

u/TheDominantPhrygian Dec 29 '17

Anything like the song "Possessed By Dark Sounds" by Lek? I know it's specific, but that opening riff kills me everytime

chaos. i'm looking for the most chaotic death or black. not like war metal chaos, or tech death. closer to The Red in the Sky is Ours.

1

u/metagloria Jan 02 '18

Siberian Hell Sounds/Convulsing split.

2

u/tututen Dec 28 '17

Prog metal

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '18

Here's a really overwhelming list. Check the comments for guidance.

Edit: also check out /r/progmetal's Hall of Fame.

2

u/targetpainter Dec 29 '17

As above, and for some harsher vox, I'd recommend Opeth, if you've not already checked them out. The classic is Blackwater Park, but my favourite is the earlier Morningrise.

Also definitely worth checking out Porcupine Tree's heavier albums, especially In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet. All three are wonderful - lots of prog rock influence and some genuinely phenomenal songwriting and album structuring. Their drummer for these three (Gavin Harrison) is also absolutely brilliant and a bit of a prog metal legend in his own right.

4

u/Noozooroo brain-damaged misanthropes on obscure internet forums Dec 29 '17
  • Queensrÿche - Operation Mindcrime (my personal favorite prog metal album, although I don't listen to much)

  • Crimson Glory - Transcendence

  • Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry

  • Dream Theater - Images & Words

  • Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite

  • /r/progressivemetal

u/felinebear Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses Dec 28 '17

Not exactly looking for recs but rather a question. What is the origin of "DSBM" and what is depressive rock? I have heard Strid mentioned as one of the originators. The music classed as dsbm I have listened to seems to fall in a wide range with some that is standard black metal and some that is almost shoegaze/postrock. So how does this connect together?

2

u/Noozooroo brain-damaged misanthropes on obscure internet forums Dec 29 '17

In Black Metal: The Cult Never Dies Vol 1, Dayal Patterson writes that there is a lot of musical diversity within the DSBM label. I haven't read the full section on DSBM yet but a cursory glance at the first few pages doesn't reveal an origin for the name of the subgenre.

As for the musical origins, Patterson points to Burzum and Thorns as offering a more introverted, despairing take on black metal than their fellow Norwegians in Mayhem, Darkthrone, and Immortal.

There are chapters on Strid, Bethlehem, Silencer, Forgotten Tomb, and Total Negation. I have also personally heard that Forgotten Woods, another Norwegian band, helped to define the DSBM sound but since I don't listen to DSBM I can't say if that's true.

I have no idea what depressive rock is.

1

u/felinebear Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses Dec 29 '17

There goes my hopes of receiving an easy answer lol. So I guess I'll have to do the digging myself. Still, thanks!

2

u/benisimo spadety handburjer Dec 29 '17

depressive rock

Only thing that comes to mind for me is Katatonia's albums like Last Fair Deal Gone Down and Viva Emptiness where they ditched the doom/death sound for a more 'alternative' direction

3

u/Memorphous https://rateyourmusic.com/~memor Dec 29 '17

Yep, this is more or less what people mean, but it's definitely a bullshit genre.

2

u/dmhead777 http://www.last.fm/user/Teh_Whittemore Dec 28 '17

Looking for some bands that have lyrics like recent (last 2-3 albums) Cattle Decapitation. Something that really opens your eyes on what's happening to the world. Sounds may vary

2

u/Mr_Britland Dec 28 '17

Gochic metal concept albums? I am not overly familiar with Gothic metal but would love a concept album that not just focuses on metal, but has an emphasis on atmosphere. Preferably using pipe organs and other instruments.

1

u/its_dat_boi14 Dec 28 '17

I'm looking for progressive metal along the lines of dream theater and haken , bands that are super melodic and also kinda heavy. Preferably clean vocals

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '17

For if you want a really overwhelming list of bands.

Otherwise check out:

  • Vanden Plas - Christ 0, The God Thing, Beyond Daylight
  • Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter, Isolate
  • Shadow Gallery - Digital Ghosts (or anything else by them really)
  • Flaming Row - Mirage: A Portrayal of Figures
  • Zierler - ESC
  • Fates Warning - Theories of Flight, A Pleasant Shade of Grey (featuring Kevin Moore!)
  • Beyond The Bridge - The Old Man & the Spirit
  • Persefone - Aathma

1

u/TheDominantPhrygian Dec 29 '17

Disillusion: Back to Times of Splendor, dodge the second LP

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '18

Alea was also a really nice EP.

2

u/Dr_Zurkon I like drums Dec 28 '17

I don't know how familiar you are with the genre so I'm just gonna spit out a bunch of album recs, some of which are pretty mainstream as far as prog metal goes:

Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape

Shadow Gallery - Room V

Symphony X - The Odyssey

Caligula's Horse - In Contact

Headspace - I Am Anonymous

Let me know if you've heard these and are looking for others, I can dig up some more stuff but I don't want this post to be 50 lines long lol. Also remember to try the methods posted in the OP, Last.FM is a godsend for finding new stuff especially if you're just getting into a new genre.

1

u/Daniel12346 Dec 28 '17

Caligula's Horse (clean vocals, heavy riffs and fairly upbeat lyrics), Distorted Harmony, Hemina, Dissona, Rendezvous Point, Nova Collective, Artificial Language, Leprous, Kaelling, Native Construct

2

u/KommandCBZhi Dec 27 '17

Greetings. I am seeking mid-tempo, dark-, epic-sounding folk metal with significant black and/or (melodic) death metal elements. Something with a similar atmosphere to that of Arkona’s Liki bessmertnykh bogov. Thank you.

1

u/MooseMoosington https://www.last.fm/user/MooseMoosington Jan 01 '18

Have you listened to Lor - In Forgotten Sleep yet? I'm not good at genre matching, but I know I've listened to this album extensively and love it and it definitely has a folky vibe to it.

2

u/an_altar_of_plagues Writer: Metal Demos | Baltic Extreme Metal Dec 27 '17

Have you listened to old school Amorphis by any chance? Tales from the Thousand Lakes is OSDM with some significant folk influences.

2

u/KommandCBZhi Dec 28 '17

I have listened to that album. It is a great album, but it is not quite what I am seeking. Thank you anyway.

Is there anything out there quite like Ride for Revenge? (Specifically Wisdom of the Few but really I'll take recs for anything remotely similar)

2

u/408Lurker Deadlift Omega Dec 30 '17

Thanks, actually been meaning to. I like the black/noise vibe they've got going on but so far, it doesn't really remind me that much of the RfR full-lengths tbh. I guess what I'm more looking for is stuff that feels like Beherit dragged through a muddy pit of shit and piss.

Regardless I'll be sure to check out more of their stuff, so thanks for the rec!

edit -- I might have spoken too soon, the second track on the linked album is much more in the vein of what I'm looking for. Thanks again!

2

u/PM_ME_COOL_IDEAS https://www.last.fm/user/DarkEastwood Dec 27 '17

In addition to all that's been mentioned, I stand strong in believing that Paysage d'Hiver is the closest anyone has gotten to what Burzum tried to do with his first four albums. Try out Paysage d'Hiver, Einsamkeit, Die Festung, and Steineiche.

Also give a listen to DarkSpace. It's Paysage d'Hiver... but in space! I recommend Dark Space II and Dark Space III.

I am happy to see Lustre in this list. I thought they'd be hated here because of not being metal or something.

4

u/Crono101 Crono101 Dec 27 '17

If you're into the classic Burzum albums then you are likely looking for the more chilling atmosphere rather than the brighter stuff that's kicking up these days. Look into the following...

  • Paysage D'Hiver - Das Tor
  • Weakling - Dead as Dreams
  • Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters
  • Drudkh - Forgotten Legends
  • Summoning - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame
  • Ulver - Nattens Madrigal

These are all jumping points, I think. If you like one very much, then check out other albums from them and then branch out to related bands. If you've having trouble with related bands, come back here, there are tons.

Let me know if any or none appeal.

2

u/Gay_For_Gary_Oldman Bisexual for Tom Hardy Dec 29 '17

hey mate, not sure where else I could ask this. Looking for decent atmoblack albums from this year, and I know this is your schtick. I've only really heard Wolves in the Throne Room, Myrkur, and Auðn from this year, as well as the Drudkh/Paysage split and the Sivyj Yar EP.

I've tried various googlings and cant seem to come up with a list which focuses on the atmo/cascadian/folk BM which I've neglected this year.

2

u/Crono101 Crono101 Dec 29 '17

Yeah sure man no problem. Let's see here.. Might not all be your cuppa, but I've enjoyed all of these this year.

Yellow Eyes - Immersion Trench Reverie (this is actually on the front page right now)

Vindkaldr - Bragr

Violet Cold - Anomie

Hermóðr - Hädanfärd

Sadness - Otro & Leave

Falls of Rauros - Vigilance Perennial

Keres & Cosmic Church - Lucifer Returns to Heaven (the Keres side isn't easy to find, but it's definitely worth finding)

Kalmankantaja - Demonwoods

Fen - Winter

Scáth Na Déithe - Pledge Nothing But Flesh

Botanist - Collective: The Shape of He To Come

Heretoir - The Circle

Enisum - Seasons of Desolation

Wiegedood - De Doden Hebben Het Goed II

Almyrkvi - Umbra

I think that's about it.. at least of the stuff I really liked. Might be missing a few smaller releases

2

u/Gay_For_Gary_Oldman Bisexual for Tom Hardy Dec 29 '17

Legend! This tab is staying up for the rest of the day. I remember checking out Fen and Falls of Rauros earlier in the year and being less impressed than their respective previous albums, but maybe I just wasn't in the mood for them. Will re-spin them.

Also, somewhat related, I just heard Wormwood's Ghostlands album for a meloblack-meets-Falkenbach kinda sound, if you havent heard them.

Thanks!

1

u/Crono101 Crono101 Dec 30 '17

I have not heard that album. I'll check it out! Thanks!

3

When hunting alone, the wolf catches small animals such as squirrels, hares, chipmunks, raccoons or rabbits. However, a pack of wolves can hunt very large animals like moose, caribou and yaks.

No problem please give feedback, in the general discussion.

1

u/santoniusmurillo Dec 26 '17

I'm looking for albums that have a really gritty and lofi sound akin to Dawn of the Black Hearts by Mayhem. Black or death metal would be ideal but I'm open to others.

I'm guessing this would probably involve earlier EPs and live recordings rather than studio albums which is why I'm struggling to find recs.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '17

There's lots of lofi Black Metal out there. Have you heard the following?

  • Abhorer - Rumpus of the Undead

  • Moonblood - discography

  • Cogumelo bands such as Vulcano, Mutilation, Chakal, etc.

2

u/DrunkenSwordsman Dec 26 '17

Fairly new to metal, looking for some Polish-sung death in the style of Vader's Piesç i Stal cover. Anyone have anything like that?

1

u/an_altar_of_plagues Writer: Metal Demos | Baltic Extreme Metal Dec 27 '17

Not death metal, but check out the thrash and death/thrash of Turbo.

5

u/Pain_n_agony Dec 25 '17

I am looking for recommendations, I listen to Anthrax, old Metallica, old Megadeth, Disturbed, Tool, Motörhead, and Suicidal Tendencies. I am starting to listen to Volbeat and Godsmack. Please give me new bands to listen to. Thanks.

Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings & Night of the Stormrider

u/k0bra3eak Writer: Funeral Doom Dec 26 '17

People already gave the essentials list, try out Havok and Evile, their both kinda worshio to the 80s thrash, with Havok having branched out a bit more.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '17

I recommend you check out the subgenre essentials list on the sidebar. You seems to like thrash so I would start there. Maybe also give 70's and 80's heavy metal and crossover thrash a go, too.

I've been listening to a lot of wardruna and enslaved lately, anyone know of something similar? I usually read while listening to them, so minimal or more faded vocals are good.

2

u/Memorphous https://rateyourmusic.com/~memor Dec 26 '17

You probably know of it already, but if you don't, check out Skuggsjá, a collaboration between Bjørnson and Selvik.

2

u/theGentlemanInWhite Doesn't actually like metal at all Dec 26 '17

Actually I don't. Thanks for the rec! Is that just an album?

1

u/Memorphous https://rateyourmusic.com/~memor Dec 26 '17

Yeah, just the 2016 album. For now at least. It's basically just modern Enslaved meets Wardruna, but the recipe works surprisingly well!

3

u/theGentlemanInWhite Doesn't actually like metal at all Dec 27 '17

I've listened to about half of it know and this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

Black Metal with pagan melodies, something like Macabre Omen, Moonsorrow, Havukruunu, and Thrawsunblat.

Bongzilla, especially Stash.

1

u/DrunkenSwordsman Dec 25 '17

Stoned Jesus? You probably know them, but if you missed them somehow, then Seven Thunders Roar is a great album.

2

u/MiguelGarka Dec 25 '17

Yup, i know them. They’re really good!!

2

u/Dom_Sathanas Cake or death? Dec 24 '17

Try DVNE (pronounced Dune). Progenitor is great as is Asheran.

Weedeater God Luck and Good Speed is also rad.

1

u/Corporate_Jigsore Dec 24 '17

Looking for thrashy/punky black metal similar to Carpathian Forest or Darkthrone's crust period.

Basically looking for Motorhead riffs with harsh vocals.

Gorement - The Ending Quest

Maybe you'll like nocturnus.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '17

Looking for something similar to the new Malokarpatan and Inconcessus Lux Lucis albums. Riffy first-wavey black metal with trad influences.

2

u/hZeuss Dec 25 '17

Dreadful Relic maybe? Full album's released in February.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '17

Oh fuck this is good, also featuring BlackGoat of Goatmoon on drums apparently.

1

u/hZeuss Dec 25 '17

The line-up is certainly interesting :-)

  • SUMMONING. I'd recommend Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame, and Oath Bound to start out.

  • Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth

  • Eternal Champion - The Armor of Ire

  • Ironflame - Lightning Strikes the Crown

  • Omen - Battle Cry

  • Ravensire - The Cycle Never Ends

  • Solstice - New Dark Age. Maybe this one has fantasy lyrics? I never really payed close attention but from the bits I've picked up on and the general feel, this should fit the bill.

There's a shitload of awesome fantasy-based metal out there; this is just some stuff in my music library that's really on-the-nose about fantasy.

5

u/deathofthesun Dec 23 '17

Brocas Helm, Arch-era Fates Warning, Griffin, Omen, Helstar, Attacker, Cauldron Born, Thunder Rider, Taramis, Ironsword, Destiny's End, Crescent Shield, Eternal Champion ...

1

u/Logan_Viking Dec 23 '17

Christmas music. Preferably death growled vocals.

2

u/IMKridegga Dec 24 '17

Silent Night

Because it amuses me

3

u/Logan_Viking Dec 24 '17

That's exactly the kind of crap I'm looking for. Traditional Christmas songs sung in a death growl.

Summoning is basically that but with a band behind it.

3

u/surdugaj Dec 22 '17

Something similar to Forteresse's Themes pour la rebellion? The clean production is great but what I'm really looking for is that bombastic melodic severity that never ceases throughout the album.

2

u/Susvourtre Jan 03 '18

maybe sühnopfer - offertoire is something you might enjoy.

1

u/surdugaj Jan 04 '18

Currently listening and enjoying greatly. Spot on recommendation.

Not exactly like Forteresse, but it has a powerful and vast melody. If that is what you were looking for then a lot of atmoblack fits your description.

2

u/surdugaj Dec 27 '17

Thanks friend, that was a great listen.

1

u/metagloria Dec 24 '17

bombastic melodic severity that never ceases throughout the album

I don't know if this fits, but that phrase is pretty much how I would describe Sun of the Sleepless "To the Elements".

You might dig FIN - Arrows of a Dying Age a.k.a. my 2017 AOTY

2

Any suggestions for bands with mythological themes (preferably Egyptian but open to anything) both musically and lyrically?

2

u/m3tals4ur0n digging up demo tapes from unmarked graves in bosnia Dec 24 '17

Purvaja

Dwesha

Demonic Resurrection

For some good Indian themes, primarily based on Hindu mythology.

3

u/benisimo spadety handburjer Dec 23 '17

Melechesh for middle-eastern influenced + Sumerian mythology

7

u/hitokirizac Riffs 4 Jesus Dec 23 '17

Nile's stuff is pretty heavy on Egyptian mythology and styling (mixed in with the tech death). Annihilation of the Wicked is a pretty good representation of their sound.

3

u/Noozooroo brain-damaged misanthropes on obscure internet forums Dec 23 '17

I don't know what mythological themes sound like musically, but lyrically Greece has you covered my dude.

  • Macabre Omen - Gods of War - At War

  • Kawir - Exilasmos, To Cavirs

  • Agatus - The Eternalist. Alright this album isn't explicitly about Greek mythology in the way the previous two are, but it seems to draw a lot from various mythological traditions in a sort of occult manner. Even if it ends up being not what you're looking for, it's goooooooooooood.

Non-greek stuff:

  • Bathory - Twilight of the Gods

  • Enslaved - Frost

  • Malokarpatan - Nordkarpatenland. This is more like... folk mythology? Or folk legends? Not sure if this is what you want but damn this is a good album.

6

u/an_altar_of_plagues Writer: Metal Demos | Baltic Extreme Metal Dec 22 '17

Okay seriously I talk about this band all the fucking time, but check out the Lithuanian band Anubi. They mix black metal, Lithuanian folk instrumentation (even ambient and jazz), and Egyptian mythology. Their only full-length Kai pilnaties akis uzmerks mirtis is the way to go.

1

u/lombard0_o Don't forget the Ancient Feeling... Dec 22 '17

Good underground death metal labels? I know DDR, Moribund, Xtreem Music, Hellthrasher and Blood Harvest.

3

u/Faceless_Aeons Dec 22 '17

Fallen Empire, Vrasubatlat, Great Dane Records.

2

u/an_altar_of_plagues Writer: Metal Demos | Baltic Extreme Metal Dec 22 '17

Transcending Obscurity, Crypta, Sepulchral Voice, Wild Rags, I Voidhanger, Nuclear War Now! (overlaps with war/black metal), Combat, Grind Core International.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '17

Can I get some of your favorite songs where the vocals seemingly never stop? Like, just constantly shrieking/growling whatever. Also, death metal with similar super thick and heavy tone similar to Severed Survival by Autopsy.

3

u/an_altar_of_plagues Writer: Metal Demos | Baltic Extreme Metal Dec 22 '17

For your second, try out some OSDM from Gorement and some new stuff from Ascended Dead.

If riding a dragon (in lieu of fighting it) is acceptable, check out the album Heroes of Mighty Magic by Twilight Force. It’s very consistent, so either you’ll love or hate all of it.

Hammerfall - Fury of the wild

Nightwish - Dark Chest of Wonders

5

For the second, I rec Monolithe. Their musis is funeral doom mostly about the human condition and evolution, which college rejection totally is.

But fwiw you'll probably get accepted to most of them.

8

u/Noozooroo brain-damaged misanthropes on obscure internet forums Dec 22 '17
  • Ironflame - Firestorm, The Gorgon, Eternal Night, Shadow Queen

  • Attacker - Kick Your Face

  • Jag Panzer - Licensed to Kill, Warfare, Harder than Steel

  • Liege Lord - Master Control (whole album)

  • The Lord Weird Slough Feg - High Passage/Low Passage, Sky Chariots, Marauder, Death Machine

  • Riot - Thundersteel (whole album)

  • Running Wild - Port Royal, Conquistadores, Under Jolly Roger, Diamonds of the Black Chest, Raw Ride

  • Savatage - Beyond the Doors of the Dark, White Witch, Prelude to Madness/Hall of the Mountain King

  • Visigoth - The Revenant King, Mammoth Rider, Blood Sacrifice

Some stuff that may or may not be power metal but at least skirts the line between power and heavy:

  • Eternal Champion - The Armor of Ire (whole album)

  • Legionnaire - Enigma of Time, Clairvoyance, Dawn of Genesis

  • Manilla Road - Necropolis, Flaming Metal Systems, Metalstorm, Heavy Metal to the World, Road of Kings

  • Ravensire - Cromlech Revelations, Crosshaven

I would of course always recommend listening to the whole albums, but since you wanted specific songs, here you go.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '17

Just looking for some more stuff like Remission, Call of the Mastodon and Leviathan by Mastodon. Been listening to these almost exclusively for a couple weeks now.

I'm well versed in Mastodons other stuff as well.

Try these:

DVNE - Asheran

Hyborian - Hyborian Vol. I

Timeworn - Venomous High

1

I like how DVNE has slowly been creeping through reddit. Ever since I heard Asheran it was the first thing I said whenever someone mentioned Mastodon or Elder. Now everyone's doing the same and throwing them out there at any Mastodon or Elder mention. Love it.

Have you heard about our Lord and Savior DVNE - Asheran?
