[REC CENTER] Shreddit's Official Recommendation Thread [6/20]
Welcome to Shreddit's [REC CENTER] where we bring together all of the recommendation threads and try to just shout over everyone to find new bands. This is a combination of "If I like X then I'll like X threads" and also all of the rogue rec threads which pop up from newcomers. This thread will be around every 2 weeks to help everyone from novice to adept with new music recommendations.
Before we allow everyone to go mingle, please look at this introductory packet as it may answer some of your questions.
- Listen to the Banned/Restricted bands -------------->
- Listen to this List
- Listen to records from the last few years
- Listen to records from 2001 - 2015
Already familiar with some of the classics and staples but want to expand your appreciation for the subgenres of heavy metal (thrash, death, black, power, heavy, doom)?
Do you want to do what I just said but have no idea what any of those words mean and cant tell the difference between death metal and a pineapple?
Do you need crash course in the last 30 years of extreme metal for a job interview, paper, eulogy, or just a chance to one up another person on the internet?
Our knowledgeable staff is here to help
Do you know metal but just do not have any direction but are willing to put in some work to find new bands?
Want to take a trip around the world and sample metal by region? Stamp your passport here
Do you just want to browse the knowledgeable archive of this sub? Community Lists, Primers, and other Quality Material
Do you have a really unique request? Probably not. Look in here first. Recommendations for Frequently Requested Bands (FRB)
Do you already know what you want to ask and nothing I just said applied? Then step right up post in the [REC CENTER]. While you are typing, allow me to remind you of good recommendation inquiry.
Look first before you type. Your question may already been answered by someone posing as you and trying to steal your life.
Be as specific as possible. "I would like more bands like Devin Townsend," or "Give me some more stoner doom from the 90's" or "Can I have some black thrash from Mongolia" all helps others give you better feedback. Do not just list random things you like such as " I like DevilDriver, Black Sabbath, Deiselboy, Call of Duty and Hotpockets...give me a band."
Give important information if you are already familiar with the genre. This is not a murder mystery dinner where one has to withhold vital information. If you post "Give me some more thrash" it might be important to mention "oh yeah, I already know Demolition Hammer, Hobbs Angel of Death, and Razor, otherwise you are getting Metallic'a first three albums and everything Slayer did in the 80's.

Pretty new to metal as a whole, spreading feelers out, trying to find more bands I'll like. Coming mainly from classic rock, favorite bands there are Rush and Led Zeppelin.
Looking for power metal similar to Dragonforce (say what you want) in speed and technique, not so much in the same-y-ness of ZP's lyrics.
Also looking for bands like Sabaton, specifically more like Carolus Rex or The Last Stand (albums both), not so much like Metalizer.
Lastly, I love Dream Theater, and would love to hear some more like them. Mainly stuff heavier than Falling Into Infinity.
I'm not a huge fan of the metal growl as the primary method of delivering lyrics, but don't mind it sprinkled in (i.e., Dragonforce's "Edge of the World" and Sabaton's "Twilight of the Thunder God"). Thanks in advance.

I'm a big fan of My Dying Bride, Empyrium and Virgin Black. I've been out of the metal scene for a long time and want to catch up. Feel free to recommend anything but I'm particularly interested in new stuff or from the past 10 years or so.
I'm looking for great doom metal.

Looking for something with real dark OR voilent lyrics. Something heavy with screaming Prefer 90s stuff and can be any album cause i dont know alot of metal bands so chances r im the one person whos never heard of themđ

Pretty much all black and death metal have dark lyrics. Death metal in particular is heavily associated with violent lyrics. Check out the subgenre essentials page on the wiki for that kind of thing.
I'd also recommend Venom - Welcome to Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982) for some of the earliest and most unabashed Satanic and sleazy lyrics in metal.

u/pewp3wpew Jun 27 '18
I am looking for songs that sound similar to "one of us is the killer" by the dillinger escape plan. Really like that song, but it doesn't sound like any of their other songs.

u/FakeNewsEverywhere Jun 29 '18
Let me see if I can hit the spot
Also, you might like Faith No More but I'm not familiar enough with their discography to give you a specific song recommendation.

Looking for prog rock that sounds similar to later Cynic material

u/TheChildrenOfAmerica Jun 27 '18
Aghora? They share some members if I remember. Great music, however, their production values suck imo
1
u/EMIN3MIX Jun 27 '18
Hey. Give me any recommendations you have cause i want to find some new bands to listen to. I've listened very classic metal like pantera, iron maiden emperor, slayer etc. so genre really doesn't matter. Some new some old. I prefer some heavier stuff like pantera but i'm open for new things too. Thank you beforehand.

genre really doesn't matter.
Check out the subgenre essentials list for whichever genre you feel like checking out. Or just click around at random.

Just gonna throw some random recommendations from all over the place:
Wintersun - self titled album (energetic, epic, folky melodic death metal)
Aether Realm - Tarot if you like that
Sorcerer - The Crowning Of The Fire King (traditional style epic doom metal, really well executed)
Crypt Sermon - Out Of The Garden if you like that
The Gathering - Mandylion (classy, sad, atmospheric female fronted doom metal)
Beast In Black - Berserker (egregiously cheesy over the top Euro power metal)
Huntsmen - American Scrap (atmospheric long form Americana style metal)
Inter Arma - Paradise Gallows (long-winded, sludgey, cavernous, Americana influenced death-y metal)

u/NerfNoose Jun 27 '18
What's a band similar to the heavier King Crimson stuff?
2
u/BahBahKapooyah https://casketsplinter.bandcamp.com/ Jun 27 '18
Kinda unrelated but me and a friend were listening to the new Arkheth album and he said "this literally sounds like black metal King Crimson" and that's some crazy high praise, I guess try that out
3
Jun 27 '18 edited Jun 27 '18
So a bit like the heavier parts in 21st Century Schitzoid Man, right? You are probably looking for avant-garde metal with unorthodox instruments.
Shining (the Norwegian one, not the Swedish one; even has a 21st C S M cover)
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Stolen Babies
Ihsahn (particularly the albums Das Seelenbrechen, After, and Eremita)
I'm not super familiar with that type of music but I've digged what I've heard from these.
Edit:
Sigh
Unexpect
are also similar.
1
Jun 27 '18
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum was the first band I thought of in response to the parent comment. Absolutely amazing band. "Of Natural History" is an essential album!
2
u/NerfNoose Jun 27 '18
Also, Tony Levin (current bass player of KC) is a fan of SGM and it has inspired his side-project. And I like that so far, great suggestion!

Funny coincidence, I was literally just gifted tickets for a King Crimson concert within a couple of weeks. I'm a fairly experienced prog fan but fairly unfamiliar with King Crimson specifically (because not on Spotify) outside of Starless and Court of Crimson King. How should I proceed into their other material? Recommendations?
(personal prog favorites Pink Floyd, Kingston Wall, Genesis, Wigwam, Gong, Jonathan Wilson, some of Steven Wilson)
2
u/NerfNoose Jun 27 '18
Hm. It's widely instrumental, songs are long and occasionally harsh on the ears, and every iteration of the band is almost completely different than the last. From Court of the Crimson King to Red is the most like 70s prog like ELP, Pink Floyd and Yes. Red is pretty good all the way through in my opinion and the least experimental. Take your pick of the litter with that, but stay away from Lizard because it was made with a singer who clearly did not give a shit save for a Jon Anderson cameo. In the 80's they sounded more like Talking Heads meets Oingo Boingo with Discipline on to Three of a Perfect Pair. Then in the mid-90's up to the 2000's they went all out industrial, prog metal like Tool and Porcupine Tree with Happy with What you Have to be Happy With. To start I would recommend Court of the Crimson King (which apparently inspired most early metal bands), Red, or Discipline.
1
u/NerfNoose Jun 27 '18
Oh yeah that's fine, thanks. King Crimson would also go on to do really heavy stuff. Lark's Tongue in Aspic 1 and 2 are prototypical of prog metal and were made in 1974 ish. Then later on in the 90's they made straight-up metal influenced stuff (which is sort of informed by bands like Tool).
2
u/TheWhiteMystery Jun 27 '18
Whatâs the best place to start with Bolt Thrower? Iâve heard a ton of good things about them but Iâve never listened to any of their music.
6
u/Noozooroo brain-damaged misanthropes on obscure internet forums Jun 27 '18
How familiar are you with death metal?
If you have little to no experience, start with their last album, Those Once Loyal (2005).
If you have a fair bit of experience, start with Realm of Chaos (1989) for an unrefined death/grind sound, The IVth Crusade (1992) for a slow and chunky pure death sound, or Warmaster (1991) for something in between.
I started with Warmaster when the only death metal I listened to was Opeth (i.e. not regular DM) so I couldn't really process what I was hearing. Moving to Those Once Loyal gave me an accessible entry point into Bolt Thrower's sound. No matter where you start, they're a fantastic band that are worth sticking with if it doesn't immediately strike your fancy.
1
u/TheWhiteMystery Jun 27 '18
I really dug Those Once Loyal, and Iâm two songs into Realm of Chaos and liking it so far. Thanks for the recommendations man!

Jun 27 '18
Can someone tell me what some all around good metal bands are? I've just recently realized it's metal specifically I like and not rock in general. I really don't like screaming, shouting is great, but unintelligible raw screaming is terrible.
5
Jun 27 '18
The field is so wide that I can't really give general recommendations, everybody has their own learning path. But I will give you a short account of how I came to be a metalhead in my late teens:
I heard of Devin Townsend from a friend, listened to the album Ocean Machine and really liked it
Nightwish is Finland's biggest metal band so they're pretty much plastered everywhere here; I started seriously listening them, loved the epic symphonic stuff, learned to like the riffs, had a long love affair with that
got into Iron Maiden
through liking Devin Townsend and easing into the harsher side of his stuff, I started liking his heavier and angrier project Strapping Young Lad
through SYL, I got into slightly more extreme bands; Meshuggah, Opeth, Gojira
after that, I got into melodic death metal (through Amon Amarth), power metal (through Nightwish and Sabaton), doom metal (through The Gathering), and folk metal (through Eluveitie)
and after that, I got into actual death metal and started actually digging into the niches of each genre; at that point the number of bands got too big to list.
The whole thing took several years.
I really don't like screaming, shouting is great, but unintelligible raw screaming is terrible.
You'll come around to that đ

u/Noozooroo brain-damaged misanthropes on obscure internet forums Jun 27 '18 edited Jun 27 '18
I'd recommend looking at the subgenre essentials list.
If you don't like extreme vocals, stick to Heavy, Doom, Power, and (some) Thrash.
TBH I wouldn't recommend the list of random albums made five years ago without any balance or context. The community has grown a lot and refined its ability to organize and present essential albums.
2
u/TheWhiteMystery Jun 27 '18
Well thereâs âthe listâ mentioned in this post, so thatâd be a good place to start. But I do understand that a list of that many bands of that many different subgenres might be intimidating, so Iâd recommend starting out with the classics, like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Motörhead.

u/MrFluffykins Jun 26 '18
I'm looking for mid paced, "sassy", catchy black metal like Marduk's "Blonde Beast" and Funeral Mist's "Blessed Curse". I live for that drum style - makes me wanna frown and slowly move my head.
2
u/DrunkenSwordsman Jun 26 '18
Anyone got any Witcher-themed metal other than Sword of the Witcher by Vader and Kaer Morhen? Not too picky about subgenres.

Visigoth - Steel and Silver
From a trad metal album that made big waves earlier this year. Best track on the thing imo.

Any bands that make stuff like Deathâs symbolic or the sound of perseverance but with clean vocals or thrash growls? Yes, Iâve heard Control Denied.
2
u/upthegates Jun 26 '18
So, you're looking for a death metal band with melodic vocals? That's a tall order. None of these are going to get you exactly what you want, but maybe they'll get you close.
- Altered Aeon (basically a Theory in Practice side-project)
- Into Eternity (Buried in Oblivion is their best)
- Obliveon - Cybervoid (Nemesis is a better fit musically, but these vocals are less growly)
- Zero Hour - Towers of Avarice (great singing, heavy music, maybe not sufficiently Death-like)
- Darkane - Layers of Lies (The second best Darkane album, but the vocals are the most "melodic")
- Ghost Ship Octavius (I'm really stretching here!)

Atheist has Death-type vocals too though

I've always thought of them as thrashier vocals so I figured it was worth a shot. I'm having a hard time thinking of anything else that would fit

Looking for new Melo Death bands along the lines of Dark Tranquility or Amon Amarth, but who have formed more recently or are just less heard of in general.
1
u/TheChildrenOfAmerica Jun 27 '18
Eucharist, December Flower, Desultory, Unanimated (specifically Ancient God of Evil)
1
u/upthegates Jun 26 '18
My favorite overlooked melodeath band was Withering Surface. They were from the first wave of Gothenburg clones, I guess you could say. Their second album, The Nude Ballet, is a total classic in my book - it's like a mix of Dark Tranquillity and Down-era Sentenced. Great stuff.
1
u/TheBiscuiteer Jun 26 '18
Scar symmetry. Give the song Limits to infinity a shot and see if you like them.

Fuckin' loved Limits to Infinity. It's got some prog/power influences too, IMO, which I love. Thank you!

Can anyone recommend some projects similar to Leviathan's "A Silhouette in Splinters"?
1
u/axechamp75 Jun 25 '18
I'm just getting into metal after being into hard rock and some more famous metal for years. I've realized I really love thrash. Its groovy sometimes, fast sometimes and always evil. But I'm really starting to like death vocals and low growling. I'm seeing if there are any modern thrash metal bands with growling in it. And any modern thrash or bands you think I should check out. I'm not really into black metal or harder death metal that's balls to the ball all the time. I like the vocals from bands like devil driver and cephalic carnage but I want something a little more thrash metal feeling.
5
u/BeastofWotan Jun 25 '18
Protector's "A Shedding of Skin" is a great death/thrash album.
As for thrash, everyone got a big ol' boner over Power Trip's 2017 album "Nightmare Logic".

Warbringer is a good modern thrash band. And for more deathlike thrash, try Solstice (U.S) and even Vader if you start to prefer more death over thrash.
Also give Morbid Saint a try if you haven't because they're extremely good.

I'm looking for stoner metal in the vein of The Sword's earlier albums. Other bands that I'm listening to right now are Kadavar, Wolftooth, Mountain Witch, and Valkyrie.

Bands that sound the closest to DT to me are In Mourning, Mors Principium Est, and Noumena. Those guys fill the same void for me that DT does. Amorphis Silent Waters and Scar Symmetry's Pitch Black Progress are other good albums that might work for you. Also check out Noozooroo's link, there are a ton of great bands there.

Looking for cheesy '80s instrumental metal that sounds nostalgic and reminiscent of the '80s as a whole. Nothing too fast and heavy, but a bit of that along with soothing ballads would be perfect. Something you might hear in a commercial, training video, or in the background of a movie.
2
u/raukolith https://houkagogrindtime2.bandcamp.com/ Jun 27 '18
vinnie moore - mind's eye
tony macalpine - maximum security
greg howe - greg howe
michael lee firkins - michael lee firkins
1
u/NerfNoose Jun 27 '18
Hmmm. I can give you some instrumental guitar stuff, but that might air a little closer to faster and heavy but can have it's more soft moments. Michael Angelo Batio is among the fastest guitarists alive and even his 7-string stuff sounds ripped from the mid-80's. His cover of All Along the Watch Tower gets a little mellow, as does No Boundaries.

I'm a complete hip-hop head, but I've slowly started listening to metal over the past few months. I've listened through Megadeth's Rust in Peace and Metallica's And Justice for All and even started following bands like Periphery. It's great shit, but I also know that this is stupid surface level type music. Where do I go next? If it helps, I love it when the singer does some spoken word type shit because I fuck with lyrics. I also love it when they do those short choppy staccato type chugs;
1
u/BahBahKapooyah https://casketsplinter.bandcamp.com/ Jun 27 '18
Check the essential albums and "best of genre" lists. It might be a bit overwhelming to all those albums but trust me it's worth it. Try to work your way up to heavier stuff, don't start right with Suffocation and Cryptopsy.
1
u/TrevorMc21 Jun 27 '18
Hacktivist will prolly be your flavour. They have alot of chuggy riffing and their vocals are spoken/Rapped
1
u/upthegates Jun 26 '18
You definitely need to hear Sikth! Don't start with their new one - it's a little boring - but their first two (The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out Wait for Something New and Death of a Dead Day) are amazing. By way of comparison, Periphery's sound is more or less plagiarized from Sikth and Meshuggah. There are a number of weird/creepy spoken word segments on all of the Sikth albums, too.
4
u/Chakks Jun 26 '18
Archspire's vocalist is influenced by hip hop. Nothing spoken word, but his style is all about speed. Might not be your thing, but it's pretty outstanding shit: https://youtu.be/1lsnTQyGI78

If it helps, I love it when the singer does some spoken word type shit because I fuck with lyrics. I also love it when they do those short choppy staccato type chugs;
Based on this description, you might dig the first few Otep albums if you want a mix of clean spoken verse/rapping, and screams/growls.
4
u/FakeNewsEverywhere Jun 23 '18
I love it when the singer does some spoken word type shit because I fuck with lyrics. I also love it when they do those short choppy staccato type chugs;
I think you just described djent (it's somewhat controversial but most people accept it as a proper subgenre more so than in the past). As u/Shirtzr4work pointed out, Meshuggah is an absolute must, they basically invented the genre, and of curse they are on a league of their own. Djent is somewhat of a popular subgenre, it has a lot of flavors, so keep that in mind. Also, metal is a huge genre, it has a ton of different styles, it can be overwhelming to get into it, but if you identify what you like you'll have an easier time finding bands and albums you like.
Now, I'll skip all the classics and primers and instead I'll recommend some bands based on what you [might] like (and what I know the most)
- Caligula's Horse - Inertia and the Weapon on the Wall + The Cannon's Mouth - Progressive Metal with some djenty vibes
- Tesseract - Hexes - Progressive/Djent
- Textures - Reaching Home - Progressive/Djent
- Uneven Structure - Incube - Progressive/Djent
- Sleep Token - Calcutta - They are somewhat of a unique band, they blend the soft atmosphere, characterized by soothing vocals contrasted by "crunchy" and heavy riff sections. They are a new band so they have only released a few songs.
Since you like Periphery you should try a couple of these
- Veil of Maya - Overthrow - They are, in some ways, slightly heavier and more technical than Periphery. But their last 2, "Matriarch" and "False Idol", albums are close in sound.
- Make Them Suffer - Ether - A good mix of Symphonic elements, Metalcore and some Djent
- Erra - Disarray - Metalcore
If you like the last 3 bands, I'll suggest also asking for more recommendations on r/metalcore (they have a thread specifically for recommendations every Monday) since there's a lot more bands that I'm not very familiar with

There's always the sidebar, but I'd like to offer some personal, lesser known favorites which are beginner-friendly instead:
- Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings (power/thrash)
- Mercyful Fate - Melissa (traditional, please stay open minded about the vocals haha)
- Riot - Immortal Soul or Thundersteel (power)
- Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King (power)
- Heathen - Victims of Deception (thrash, which is the subgenre Metallica and Megadeth play)
- Dream Theater - Black Clouds and Silver Linings (prog)
- Symphony X - Paradise Lost (power/prog)
- Daydream XI - The Circus of the Tattered and Torn (power/prog)
- Opeth - Blackwater Park (death/prog)
- Immortal - At the Heart of Winter (black)
- Elder - Lore (stoner doom)
1
u/TheCornyJoke Level 1 Metalhead | L3V3L 1 M3TALH3AD Jun 23 '18
Wait, Dream Theater's metal? Huh, didn't know that. Honestly, the title made it sound like a glitzy pop band, so I avoided it. I guess I'll have to listen to them. Also I'm listening to Hall of the Mountain King as I type this, fuuuck it's good, Imma have to listen to more of that. Thanks for the suggestions!
3
Jun 23 '18
Dream Theater is definitely metal, though they're often pretty light. They're progressive metal which means long songs (they have songs over 20 minutes) with tons of odd time signature and complexity in the playing. Black Clouds is not at all one of their most acclaimed albums, but it's very accessible and it's one of their "most metal" album (as far as that means anything). If Black Clouds interests you, try Images and Words and go chronologically from there. When Dream and Day Unite is also worth checking out, but it has a different singer and is a lot closer to 80s power metal like Savatage than all their other stuff (not that that's a bad thing seeing how you like them haha). It's like a raw prologue to what's to come.
And if you wanna explore that Savatage sound further (aside from their other albums, of which I suggest Sirens and Gutter Ballet), take a look at this guide for US Power Metal which is very informative.
And glad to be of help!

u/Logan_Viking Jun 23 '18
Have you tried Avenged Sevenfold? They take a lot of crap on here because they're too mainstream, but that sounds like a great place for a rookie to start (they were one of my first bands when I got into metal a couple years ago). "Nightmare", "Hail to the King", and "Buried Alive" are some of their bigger hits.
You might like Evile because they have some strong Metallica influence. A7X does too actually; "This means war" was actually kind of a tribute to Metallica's "Sad but true"
Five Finger Death Punch is another mainstream band "trve" metalheads give a lot of crap to. "Back for more" is my favorite by them.
Disturbed: "Indestructible" and "The vengeful one" are cool too.

Oh man, you have quite a bit of work ahead of you. There's a bunch of essential albums wiki posts in the sidebar and those are always a great place to start. Try those and then check back for some more underground or obscure stuff. I will say a good place to start for you might be Meshuggah. Chaosphere is an absolute must listen.

Also if you can recommend me anything with ample use of keyboard classical piano sounds similar to those of Obscurcis Romancia's Theatre of Deception and Anthelion's Bloodshed Rebefallen that'd be much appreciated.

I know they're not the most popular band around here but I'm looking for recs similar to the new Skeletonwitch tracks released recently. I've always enjoyed the blackened thrash they did but Fen of Shadows and especially When Paradise Fades are really, really doing it for me. I've listened to fair amount of Wolvhammer, which is the obvious connection, and I like that well enough but the vocals seem more generic for some reason.
So, basically looking for blackened thrash that, importantly, has fairly clean production. I've listened to a lot of older stuff that's influenced the new Skeletonwitch sound and I can't get past some of the really lo-fi production with super buried guitars, etc. I know this is an oddly specific request but any recs would be appreciated.

When Paradise Fades gives me goosebumps. Starting from 2 minute mark on, it's unreal. I just listened to that song twice. I actually thought to ask here for some recommendations but decided to scroll down first haha

What about Goatwhore?

Recent Desaster releases are fairly clean, The Art of Destruction and Angelwhore are my favorites of their recent material.
Deströyer 666âs Phoenix Rising and Cold Steel.. For an Iron Age are both rather clean along with their recent releases.

u/neurot0 Jun 22 '18
Cool, I'll check these out. Thanks for the rec. I've heard bits and pieces of Destroyer 666 and I never got on with them but I think it's definitely worth giving them another shot.

Try the band Witchery. My favorite blackened thrash band and pretty similar to Skeletonwitch.

Anybody have bands similar to Animosity? No solos, no singing and creative drumming? Just riff riff riff. Thanks!

Not the closest comparison, but Animosity has always reminded me of the first three Cryptopsy albums, with that riff-driven, crazy drumming approach. Also try The Red Chord, which falls into the same "when deathcore was good" vein.

Sup Kind people of the Rec Board,
I am trying to catch up on my 2018 releases. I have gotten plenty of rec's for my favorite genres (Death and Doom), but I was wondering what else is out there this year that I should give a listen to. I tend prefer Trad, Speed, Thrash more so than black metal/War metal.
So essentially this post is a request for your favorite albums thus far in the non-death, non-doom realm.
Edit: I just realized I posted this the day before the top 5 voting starts, which makes the post kind of moot. Either way, if you've got suggestions I'd love to hear them

Chances are you know some of these already:
- Riot V - Armor of Light (uspm)
- Melodius Deite - Episode III: The Archangels and the Olympians (power/prog like Symphony X)
- Scientist - Barbelith (blackened prog/sludge)
- Tremonti - A Dying Machine (modern hard rock/thrash/speed)
- Hands of Despair - Well of the Disquited (sorry this is prog death/black, but it's extremely good and my favorite from this year. If you like Opeth or Edge of Sanity, this is for you)

Jun 22 '18
Panphage - Jord
Gatekeeper - East of Sun
Transilvania - The Night of Nights
Probably my 3 favorite non death metal records out this year so far.

u/christianhashbrown ripping the continents apart Jun 22 '18
Some trad releases I've enjoyed this year-
Lucifer's Hammer
Substratum - album and EP (long enough to be another album)
Sacred Leather
VOJD
Gatekeeper
Bonus round:
Solstice (epic doom, so you may have heard it, but if not its super good)
Doomentor - doom/black metal mix

Chevalier - Chapitre II (trad)

How do all you guys find new music? A week ago i started listening to spotify radio, which gives me a very good range of songs that are similar to what i listen to, but in that nature, ~ 50% of the songs i already know, I.E. Sabaton, Nightwish, Amon Amarth.
The rest is equally distributed among new discoveries, songs i don't like, and songs i didnt know existed from bands i love. I didn'T even know of the new Amorphis album released last month, even though i should have seen the thread on this subreddit about it.
So now here i am, hungry for more power metal/melodic death metal/Amorphis, In Flames, also stuff like Edguy and Dream Evil. I mean i can just try out all their songs, but that is tedious.
So i hope you can recommend me some stuff, or maybe share more "efficient" ways to find new music. It feels like there are millions of metal songs out there that i would like but can not possibly know of.

I listen to Fenriz's monthly podcast on soundcloud, plus look at the new music section on rockbox, plus there's a few things I've discovered through this sub as well.

Personally how I find new music is through using this sub and following labels on Bandcamp.

u/MooseMoosington https://www.last.fm/user/MooseMoosington Jun 22 '18
I get a ton of good bands from http://www.angrymetalguy.com/ as well as here and https://www.metal-archives.com. If you go to angrymetalguy, there is a spot towards the bottom right of the page that has tags listed. The numbers are the ratings that an album has, and amg is pretty good with their ratings. You will find a lot of good music if you look at the 4.0s, 4.5s, and 5.0s. I'll just link them for you 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0.
3
u/IMKridegga Jun 22 '18
I mostly use this sub. There's great stuff I've never heard of posted all the time, so I can never really run out of things to try out. In fact, my biggest problem now is dealing with the backlog.
You might also like the r/powermetal discord since it's tailored a bit towards some of the kinds of music you mentioned. The people on there like most genres though, so it's not really one-sided.

u/Penguincamp surely SOMEONE else likes Nocturne Moonrise? Jun 22 '18
Metal Archives. Check the forum for the new releases people are talking about. Look up band names and use the similar artists tab on their bandpage.
1
u/ApathyBM ApathyBM.bandcamp.com Jun 22 '18
In something that's both underground but at the same time immense, word of mouth is really the most reliable. Everyone can't listen to every new release, although places like bandcamp make it easy to do so. Still there's too much music being produced to really absorb. So even though it's old school, places like these serve the purpose of other people with the same taste as you having already done the work.
Aside from here, you can join a facebook group dedicated to whatever subgenre you're into. Or even just spam your favorite band pages for recs. If need be, try even the Metal Archives forums, if you dare.

u/CELTICPRED Jun 21 '18
Looking for metal containing the following: bands like the big 4, testament, xentrix, Sacred Reich, artillery, evile.
Clean vocals. Can't get into stuff like vektor because of the vocals. You can see how disgustingly picky I am. Thanks

u/YeimzHetfield https://www.last.fm/user/YeimzHetfield Jun 22 '18 edited Jun 22 '18
Try the first 3 albums by Hirax, in their chronological order: Raging Violence; Hate, Fear and Power; and The New Age Of Terror. They are one of the bands that will come to anyone's mind when talking clean vocals in thrash.
Horcas: First two albums. This band is from my country and it basically has big influences in Metallica and Testament, I think you'll like it. Here's a song from their second album, you can instantly hear the influences I said before.
And it never hurts to give harsh vocals a try, see how you like Hellbringer, since you said bands like the big 4, this one is for Slayer fans. Maybe you end up liking it, who knows?

Melodeath is a confusing beast to me. I've been on a massive Carcass kick lately (Heartwork and Surgical Steel right now but Necroticism is one of my favorite albums ever) but I've tried a bunch of the frequently recommended bands like Dark Tranquility, early CoB, early Arch Enemy, etc. but nothing has quite that same style. It's hard to quantify, but I think the thing I like about Heartwork is the straight-forward thrash riffs interspersed with slow, trudging interludes with dueling guitar harmonies. Any other bands with that kind of feel that I'm missing out on?
1
Jun 24 '18
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
In Flames - The Jester Race
I highly recommend these 2 to any new melo death fan.
3
Jun 23 '18
I know they get a lot of flak round here, but The Black Dahlia Murder - more specifically, their recent release(s) - do a great job of 'proper' melodeath. I'm like you in that I hate melodeath that sounds too much like power metal.
Also At The Gates are pretty much a given (The warm tone of Slaughter of the Soul always gives me Carcass-vibes), as are a bunch of the other bands mentioned by others here.
1
u/Ultimetalhead www.twitter.com/BiscMerch Jun 23 '18
Interesting rec. I've definitely steered away from Black Dahlia because of their core association. But hey, I'm almost 26. I might be able to let the purist mentally go. :P

Jun 23 '18
They're a great band honestly, they're kinda unfairly associated with metalcore because they emerged at the same time as that scene. Start with their latest record and work your way back I'd say
1
u/rorcayk Jun 22 '18
Not quite like mid-era Carcass, but Edge of Sanity, particularly The Spectral Sorrows, Purgatory Afterglow, and Crimson, might be worth a shot. Those three records combine OSDM with varying levels of melody and prog, with tunes ranging from all out Swedeath to Gothenburg-style pedal tone abuse.
1
u/Ultimetalhead www.twitter.com/BiscMerch Jun 22 '18
Fuck yes. Totally forgot to mention them. Purgatory Afterglow is a perfect album and very similar to the type of stuff I'm looking for.
3
u/rorcayk Jun 22 '18
In that case, I shoot this list your way. Lots of good melodic death metal (as in death metal that has a good sense of melody while remaining actual death metal, rather than melodeath) in there. Some personal recs:
Horrendous (Ecdysis and Anareta are both amazing)
Dismember
early Amorphis (death/doom with a melodic edge)
Arghoslent are pretty popular in this subgenre but Iâm not a fan personally (the music is fairly good, but the lyrics and imagery are too offputting)
Necrophobic (black/death)
6
u/Jesus_On_Meth_ I will never put my sword down, I will never run away Jun 22 '18
Maybe youâd enjoy Intestine Baalism? Not really like Carcass but theyâre melodeath thatâs very different than the stuff you didnât like.
5
u/Penguincamp surely SOMEONE else likes Nocturne Moonrise? Jun 21 '18
I'm doing a binge of melodeath in chronological order to better understand this. I'm nowhere near done so I'm not certain, but it appears that once the so-called "Gothenburg" style rose in popularity (which is what early Dark Tranquillity and early Arch Enemy are), the original style of straightforward death metal with melodic riffs died in popularity. Furthermore, the experimentation of new styles via CoB, EToS, Insomnium, Soilwork, later In Flames, etc. shot up in popularity to the point where the definition of "melodeath" completely warped.
Although I like the newer styles, Carcass's Heartwork is awesome. Sadly, I haven't found anything like it. But my closest recommendations would be Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream and Merciless - Unbound. Even if they're not quite like Carcass I still hope you enjoy them.
1
u/Ultimetalhead www.twitter.com/BiscMerch Jun 21 '18
Great response. Thank you! I will add those to my Spotify queues.
1
u/Penguincamp surely SOMEONE else likes Nocturne Moonrise? Jul 23 '18
Definitely late, but I got into Arch Enemy a little more and I want to point out that their 1999 album "Burning Bridges" sounds more Carcass-like than the albums that preceded and succeeded it. It's still a lot more melodic than Heartwork but I think the comparison works regardless.

I like cheesy EUPM. Maybe something goofy and stupid, like Gloryhammer or early Twilight Force. But obviously this stuff isn't for everyone (especially considering how far in the background the guitars are for Twilight Force).
If you're the kind of guy that appreciates things that are so bad they're good, go watch some crappy music videos too.

Heard of Riot but never listened to them. Definetely will be though

Hit me up with Progressive and/or Tech Death. Bonus points for (somewhat) intelligible vocals.
If it helps, assume I know and love Allegaeon, Black Crown Initiate, Rivers of Nihil, Gojira, Fallujah, The Faceless, Ne Obliviscaris, Opeth and Obscura.
Secondary request: bands similar in sound to Meshuggah without dipping into the -core stuff. Most of the djent I've found in the -core stuff has not had what I'd call the atmosphere that Meshuggah has, if that makes sense.

u/FakeNewsEverywhere Jun 23 '18 edited Jun 23 '18
For Progressive and Tech Death
- Virvum - Illuminance
- The Ritual Aura - Keening IV: Red Year & The Fall
- Inanimate Existence - Calling from a Dream
- Oblivion - Multiverse
- Kardashev - Between Sea And Sky
- The Zenith Passage - Deus Deceptor
- Soreption - King of Undisputed Nonsense
- Entheos - New Light
- Brought by Pain - Broadcast
- First Fragment - Le Serment de Tsion
For Groove/Djent like Meshuggah
- Extinction Level Event - Entropy
- Terminal Function - Seraph Sublime
- Oni - The Only Cure
- Coprofago - The Inborn Mechanics
- The Dali Thundering Concept - The Myth of Happiness - I know you said bands without dipping into the core stuff but give this one a go. Their latest album is quite good.
1
u/corsair238 Jun 25 '18
If that song you posted by Entheos is representative of their typical sound I think I'm going to fucken love them. Dope screams (and from a female! She's got serious talent and metal needs more girls) and slap bass in some prog/tech death? Yes please. Aside from them Virvum and The Ritual Aura I'll probably return to, maybe Kardashev as well, I like the atmospheric/psychedelic vibe to their stuff.
Extinction Level Event is just right up my alley. All bass and basically Meshuggah worship? The rest of those you listed are pretty nice too, will probably be returning to ELE, Terminal Function, and Coprofago the most tho.
So with the request for not -core stuff it isn't that I don't like the -core stuff (a few of my favorite bands are either metal or death core), I just hadn't found anything in that group that had the same almost hypnotic grooves and massive sound, and it typically scratches a different musical itch for me. That being said, I do like what I heard from TDTC.
1
u/sdpcommander Jun 23 '18
Have you listened to Atheist and Cynic?
1
u/corsair238 Jun 23 '18
I have not gotten around to giving them a listen, though I understand they're some of the greats in the prog/tech death area?
1
u/ApathyBM ApathyBM.bandcamp.com Jun 22 '18
Since you didn't name him, have you listened to Ihsahn's solo work? It's more non-descript extreme as oppposed to death metal, but definitely hits the technical itch.
1
u/corsair238 Jun 22 '18
I don't consider him death metal as well (which is why I didn't list him), but I sure as fucking love his solo work. His work with Emperor is aight too, but black metal is not a genre I overly care for.

1) new Ăpoch, Alkaloid, Inferi
generally great prog death: Persefone, Akercocke, Voices, In Vain
2) try Uneven Structure and VOLA
1
u/corsair238 Jun 21 '18
1) Great suggestions, thanks! I think out of that bunch, Inferi was my least favorite from my first pass through of your suggestions. By the way, there are apparently a billion and one bands named Inferi on metal-archives.
2) Neither of them quite fit the bill for what I was looking for, but they are both great.
1
u/welyyt kannustaa.bandcamp.com Jun 21 '18
Did you try Decapitated's Organic Hallucinosis? Tons of similar grooves there.
1
u/corsair238 Jun 22 '18
I've heard of them but haven't given them a listen, especially with all the controversy about the rape/kidnapping charges that were eventually dropped.
Based on a primary listen through they're sorta up my alley, but not a group I feel like I'd listen to with any regularity.;
