Coming from classic rock and especially Sabbath, you'd probably like doom metal. Check out Elder, The Sword, Faetooth, and similar bands.

Or jump in the deep end with Electric Wizard

Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, Dream Theater, and to mix it up throw some Agalloch and Blood Incantation into the mix.

I would recommend you Carcass - Swansong. That album has a good 70s rock vibe mixed with melodic death metal

Maybe you could also like Lucifer, and point to Stoner Metal as well (Electric Wizard for example, or Orchid which are quite similar to Black Sabbath).

Ill check it out!

Are you enjoying Sabbath? Which album(s) are you listening to and if it's more than one, which are your favorite?

Iron Maiden, Metallica’s first four albums, Megadeth, Anthrax (which will be pretty different), Motörhead. That’s very strong 80s metal. Slayer. I’d use Pantera’s Cowboys from Hell album to transition to the 90s. HammerFall’s Legacy of Kings. 2000s could be Testament, Traveler’s self titled album, and Nevermore. 2010s Satan’s Hallow, Sumerland.

Judas Priest for sure. Sad Wings of Destiny, Hell Bent For Leather, and Stained Class particularly.

Iron Maiden

Motörhead

Scorpions, Accept, try Voivod though it may not stick at first (took me a while, but now they're among my faves), Danzig, Ozzy solo

Depends on where you want to go. Thrash and classics? Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, etc. Newer bands? System of a Down, Telethia, Motionless In White. It's kind of hard to know what types of metal people like online, but a lot of the newer stuff is technically "metalcore" I just can't be bothered to memorize the differences. Point is: you can kind of launch in any direction from Black Sabbath and you'll likely find a lot of hits and a few misses. Welcome to the most fun genre of music

Vwry helpful! Thanks!

System of a down

u/ConstructionSparky 9d ago

Do you only want older more classic metal suggestions or newer, heavier stuff?

1

u/NoFennel7351 9d ago

Fine with both

1

u/ConstructionSparky 9d ago

Ok so everything I'm going to recommend is heavy or VERY fucking heavy. Slayer (Raining Blood and Angle of Death are the best songs IMO), Meshuggah, Megadeth, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, Slipknot, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Lamb of God, Gojira, Korn, and last but not least Behemoth. Sorry if this is overwhelming but I've lived and breathed metal since I was in elementary school. I'm 28 now

Acid bath

Nailbomb

u/Tux-Lector 9d ago

Sepultura, Anthrax, Prong, Pantera, Fear Factory, Annihilator, Testament, Slayer, Megadeth ...

1

u/Able-Hawk-2234 9d ago

Maybe checkout the classic 70s proto metal/heavy hard rock bands. Deep purple, motorhead, rainbow, judas priest and my favourite scorpions

If you want something new checkout messa or down (although down are not really new)

Can't believe nobody is recommending Slayer. Not the best band, but the perfect jumping off point in my opinion

  • Nativity in Black: A Tribute to Black Sabbath
  • Nativity in Black II

Then listen to those bands.

Metal band Iron Maiden might be closest to classic rock. Stoner metal/rock band Kyuss is similar to Black Sabbath. Tool is prog metal/rock, worth checking out. Rage Against the Machine vombines metal/rock with rap.

Then some famous heavier metal bands I like: Meshuggah, Mastodon, Metallica (first 5 albums), System of a Down, Gojira.

1

u/Wolfbane14 9d ago

Dio's solo career, start with Holy Diver

1

u/stonedmariguana 9d ago

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats

1

u/Mean_Guarantee_5266 9d ago

These guys identify as Metalcore, Future Static

1

u/Nemesis861986 9d ago

Welcome to the family Son 🤘 Trivium, Sylosis, Slayer.. do it

1

u/MetalMonk9024 9d ago

Obvious ones would be judas priest, motorhead and iron maiden. Then metallica, megadeth, slayer and pantera. Id also heavily recomend Opeth who mix 70s prog with death metal and mastadon, early stuff is heavier and later stuff more accesible to classic rock fans.

Gojira - they have covered Black Sabbaths -Under The Sun live,

so have many other bands covered Sabbath some are already listed above.

Bathory

u/Link50L 9d ago

Faith No More

Personally, I'd start with Album Of The Year

u/StillStrawberryy 9d ago

You should start by exploring the different subgenres and finding what kind of stuff you like

1

u/StillStrawberryy 9d ago edited 9d ago

That being said, if you are liking Sabbath try Ozzy’s solo stuff and Black Label Society. Slayer, Iron Maiden, Metallica are some good bands to start with. It really depends on personal preference and what kind of subgenres you gravitate towards.
Other bands I recommend: Electric Wizard, Acid Bath, Faetooth, Melvins, Baroness, Mastodon

1

u/SnooSketches4624 9d ago

Electric Wizard

1

u/Armadeus_Bassist 9d ago

I'd start with the biggest and then work your way into sub genres. Thrash, death metal, groove metal, heavy metal, nu metal, metal core, etc. Don't skip the dio years of sabbath. Heaven and hell is great as is mob rules.

Metallica Iron maiden motorhead Pantera Judas preist Pantera Slipknot Slayer

shameless self plug to check out my band lol

1

u/Luv-Nities 9d ago

Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Def Leppard ( 1st 2 albums )
I am going to assume you are into MC5

u/Commercial_Falcon_51 9d ago

If you like Sabbath, try Orchid (Capricorn album is a good start) They sound exactly like Sabbath.

I still maintain that the "New to Metal" and "Subgenre Essentials" pages on r/metal are the best places to start:

Don't just listen to stuff people think might appeal to a person who self-IDs as a classic rock fan, jump in and listen to the genre on its own terms. I agree with everyone saying to start with the classics, but there needs to be direction. It's nice to be recommended Metallica as a new fan, but it's better with some context. Past a point you'll want to guide your own journey, and the context is good for that.

If I was to recommend one band I don't see anywhere else in this thread, it would be Diamond Head. Their songwriting is generally a bit more straightforward and immediate than Black Sabbath, but the influence is obvious, along with a bunch of other '70s hard rock and heavy metal:

You probably already dug into some of the more obvious choices by now. Please give Queensryche, Dokken, and Orange Goblin (Time Traveller's Blues & Frequencies From Planet Ten) a listen.

Try Avenged Sevenfold!

Check out this playlist and explore some of the subgenres that appeal to you the most. I’m a bit new to metal myself, but here’s some recommendations:

Traditional Metal: Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance, Iron Maiden - Powerslave, DIO - Holy Diver

Doom Metal: Pentagram - Relentless, Witchfinder General - Death Penalty, Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus

Thrash: Metallica - pretty much any album up to And Justice for All, Megadeth - Rust in Peace, Slayer - Reign in Blood

Death Metal: Literally any Death album, Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness, Obituary - Cause of Death, Entombed - Left Hand Path

Power Metal: Jag Panzer - Tyrants EP and Ample Destruction, Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Parts 1 and 2, Stratovarius - Episode and Visions, Rhapsody - Symphony of the Enchanted Lands

Groove Metal: Pantera - Cowboys from Hell, Sepultura - Chaos AD and Roots

Black Metal: Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark, Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky and Transylvanian Hunger

Instead of posting my favourites groups I would recommend you to listen to the best (and most accesible) songs of the bands around Black Sabbath and other rock bands so you know what direction you want to take. One step at a time so you don't end up lost in the middle of a thousand recommendations.

Check if you want to stay in the 70's > Heavy Metal/Blues Rock:

Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin
Stormbringer by Deep Purple
Easy Livin' by Uriah Heep
Kill the King by Rainbow
(Children of the Grave by Black Sabbath)

Check if you want to go to the 80's > NWOBHM & Thrash Metal:

The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden
Princess of the Night by Saxon
You've got another thing Comin' by Judas Priest
(Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath)
Creeping Death by Metallica
Peace Sells by Megadeth
Raining Blood by Slayer

Then you can check if you want to go slow (Doom Metal) or fast (Speed Metal):

Doom > Solitude by Candlemass / Sign of the Wolf (Pentagram)

Speed > Ace of Spades by Motörhead / Welcome to Hell by Venom

Then you can check if you want to darkness (Black Metal) or lightness (Power Metal):

Black > A Fine Day to Die by Bathory / I am the Black Wizards by Emperor

Power > I Want Out by Helloween / Valhalla by Blind Guardian

There's no point in going straight to the more different or complex subgenres like Atmospheric Black, Technical Death, Djent...

Choose your path and enjoy the journey.
