Game Help Nightmarish problem.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
So, I’ve been playing fusion on an emulator today, and I just encountered Nightmare. Now, I knew that Nightmare was considered the hardest boss in Fusion, but I was really overconfident at the time, even so that I deleted all my save states to make room for a save state on this fight. However, I had made the grave mistake of savestating on 1 E Tank and 90 energy, with a near-unavoidable attack upon reloading the savestate.
Now, usually a clever player would assume to die and load their nearest save. HOWEVER, my overconfident ass decided to not save after nettori because I had savestates.
So yeah, I’m basically stuck on a 5-hit Nightmare run now. Is there like, a cheese strat for nightmare orrrrr???

Been a hot minute, but you can no-hit Nightmare-X. When Nightmare begins slowly approaching you with his guns firing, you'll want to be on the ladder and just unload missiles right into his face. When you feel he has gotten too close, spacejump above and behind him. When he starts to chase you, fall down, and then position yourself back on the ladder. When Nightmare chases you, he can't actually turn very fast. He actually has inertia and will drift slightly off course whenever he changes direction. Essentially, this phase of the Nightmare fight requires you to move clockwise around the arena, and you want to line him and your position up with the ladder as he will immediately stop chasing and go back to his slow firing approach. It may take a bit of practice before you get it down but it makes the fight much easier.

Basically this but no , for the sole reason that if you space jump behind -top of nighmare before he chase you he CAN start the chase by going diagonally, which résult in a unavoidable hit. The best thing to do is space jumping above him and being stuff to the bottom left of the area. Hence even what hé will do , you will always bé able to avoid him way more easily , and stopping his chase loop earlier if you know how (in just one whole turn)

I am by no means an expert as I literally just finished this game for the first time yesterday but honestly atp I’d just take the time to go back to your in game save and trek back to nightmare. I know it’ll suck, but I cannot personally see myself ever being able to finish the boss on low health like that

u/AnonCoup May 31 '26
Yeah, as a more casual enjoyer who doesn't care for extra difficulty runs, I think this is the best take. Even with full health, this guy was like an hour or two of reloads to beat. I think learning to beat him without a few hits would take significantly longer.
Though, I will say this boss will likely require OP to skill up from what the video shows regardless😅

u/bowba_bowba May 31 '26
Absolutely, this boss took me about an hour myself and usually tanked most of my health through the fight. It definitely helps to go in there with full HP. You’re not wrong about that last part though, I definitely see a number of ways OP could have avoided a lot of the hits they took in the video

A no hit run is possible and its even developer intentional:
You have to bait it in a loop, there is no way around it. Especially on 1% runs, which are developer intended, as the japanese version even features 2 locked endings behind 1%.
But yeah, try locking him in a loop. It takes 2-5 minutes to kill it that way. But especially on low % there is not way around it.
But since you are still learning on how to beat it regularly:
In your case, just survive phase 1 and in phase 2 just barrage him with ice missiles on the ladder when he is Floating slowly towards you.

Dont hate me for saying but all those hits were avoidable without the ladder. You can prejump to make him go higher at you meaning you can then dodge underneath, and the last hit was jumpable.

Its jover buddie. Something similar happend to me but serves us right for using save states 😂

I mean.... Theorically speaking Nightmare is actually pretty easy to control after you destroy the gravity device.
When you are at the ladder before he touchs you, try to jump above him and after that create a clockwise movement of him following you, with you doing spaceJumps to dodge always in the clockwise way on the whole room.
And after that you just need to pray for the moment he stops spinning behind you, being a moment that you have clear position to return to the ladder and just spam charge beams/missiles.

I read that the slash animation of the charge beam does like 2x damage

u/DadyCoool11 Jun 02 '26
It can let you 2-shot Serris, but it requires you to be in melee range, which isn't really possible with this boss.

u/GrimmTrixX May 31 '26
You couldve jumped many of those movements. Just stick with it and get good at movement

Use ice misiles and then when the gravity kicks you use the charged beams, then misiles again; but like someone mentioned before, you need to learn how to jump above him using the ladder.

u/inexplicableinside May 31 '26
You have space jump, yeah? Notice at 0:24 how when you jump high, he starts to do what would have been a clockwise spin around the arena. You can control where he goes, so that you have little to no worry that he'll actually catch and hit you. It's okay if it takes a few loops before you get his face lined up with the ladder, he's very predictable at this point and you just have to avoid being in the line of those blaster bolts.

You are not showcasing the skills needed for this kind of predicament heheh you gotta go back for energy my friend

Ah, Nightmare. What a boss, indeed. u/Separate_Crazy_983 has mostly covered the gist of it, I'm just reiterating for clarity.
So you may have noticed that at 0:18 or so in your clip, Nightmare starts to fly around the arena. Hopefully you can see here that he doesn't fly straight at you, but does that little upwards movement before circling around to get you. Nightmare has a set turn angle, and can't make particularly tight turns during this attack, so it's possible to essentially play jump-rope with him while he careens around the screen. You actually got this sequence started for a moment at 0:24 in your clip, but then didn't follow through with it since you didn't know what you were supposed to aim for.
Your specific case is a little janky, because you usually want to go above and then behind Nightmare for when he triggers his flight patterns, then start the jump-rope stuff, but you dropped down instead. I've mostly just watched my brother do runs against Nightmare, and he nearly always goes for the upwards route, so I can't really say how difficult going down like that might make things.

ive never understood why people consider nightmare difficult as i honestly feel the boss prior to this was a lot harder when I originally played it as a kid with the stupid spinning spider
edit: i did not open the video full thanks mobile mode and did not notice the low hp

u/SilentScyther May 31 '26
I never really had problems with this boss. I only really had difficulty with the SA-X fight, especially on mobile emulator.

NSO rewind is the best thing that happened to me. I would have rage quit otherwise.

If you have a full Charge, you can spin through its arms. They will not deal damage this way, giving you more room to maneuver.

u/ScootDeToot Jun 01 '26
You're supposed to space jump in a counter-clockwise direction. When he's messing with gravity with laser fire mode it's just simple rhythm, jump straight up then when he floats down launch diagonal missile and repeat. I never considered him the most difficult boss. As a kid I struggled much more with Yakuza and the SA-X.

My recommendation is to check out a No Damage strategy on how to defeat this boss.
Take this for example:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fTBiZddHvnY&pp=ygUdTWV0cm9vZCBmdXNpb24gbmlnaHRtYXJlIGxvdyU%3D
You can do it faster but that's more risky, so this video is probably a good start for you, OP 👍🏻
GL and keep at it!

You gotta learn the boss Good luck 🤞

u/DadyCoool11 Jun 02 '26
Metroid has always been good about giving bosses predictable patterns, hasn't it? Really makes you feel like a badass when you can just juke them all.

This boss is why I never beat Fusion. Took many tries to just be able to kill the beast but after dying against the parasite a few times I just gave up.

u/Spinni_Spooder May 31 '26
I'm probably the only one who thought nightmare was easy. XP
Really all you gotta do in that phase is jump in circles around him then go onto the ladder and then spam missiles into his face. He dies very quick.

I'm on my first playthrough and the bosses are messing me up man. It seems like they just instantly kill me over and over until I figure it out. The game is really good, but there's such a difficulty spike halfway through

Maybe you'll have better luck if you play a legal version instead of a pirated one.

Learn to jump over him, especially utilizing the ladder on the left side of the screen. And learn to spam that charge me into his face whenever you can
