Pictures you can hear as a Metroid fan. I feel your pain. My main strategy here is the morph ball is handy until the little circle things appear but if you pop up in a kneeling position and freeze em quick enough you can avoid most damage from the little bullet things that make you jump into the lava. I'm sure the rest you know what to do spam missiles into her blinker until she blows up.

The fun Zone! You are supposed to have fun. ARE YOU HAVING FUN. ARE YOU?!!??!?

Joking aside this patented piece of shit is one of the worst boss fights in modern Metroid history.

I wasnt joking on the it being patented part btw. Its really patented

Sauce: Metroid Wikia

73

u/Yahyathegamer749 Jul 05 '26

They patented the fucking boss fight?!

84

u/Saneless Jul 05 '26

Maybe to prevent any other developers from inflicting this kind of pain on anyone else

43

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 05 '26

Twice! The Chozo God of War Mural fight is patented too.

People think Nintendo patented gameplay as of recently ro fuck with Palworld

But fact is they have done it for decades lmao

Though lets be real. Who tf would copy this fight unironically

Different patent they issued right before.
The one they explicitly used for Pal world was issued somewhere in the early 2000s.

Just wanted to clear up misinformation.
But its till absolutely shitty and mind-boggling they even are using it.

Come lets collectively sue Scott Cawthon for having a Mother Brain fight in Five Nights at Freddys 57: Freddy in Space

3

u/OrangeFRYT Softlocked Jul 07 '26

What are you taking about? The Freddy in space boss is legally distinct, as Scott's head is on the right side of the screen.

10

u/Yahyathegamer749 Jul 05 '26

when I looked deeper into the patent drama, it turns a lot of videogame publishers were very trigger happy with patenting their shit back then such as Namco with the minigame during loading screens or Sega with that one pointing arrow from Crazy Taxi. Publishers were always assholes and hated competition

6

u/TheWorclown Jul 05 '26

There’s also the reality of developer talent poaching. It’s why you see so many nicknames and aliases in game credits back then, for example. If you had a real good programmer you wouldn’t want to lose them to the competition offering better pay or bonuses or any other lucrative deal, since it’d be that much harder to recover from in the infancy of game dev.

Patented game mechanics also lend its weight to preventing poaching from occurring, since that developer couldn’t just replicate what put their name in the crosshairs of other companies. They’d have to use new ideas, which may negate any benefits competition had in hiring them.

6

u/HikkingOutpit Jul 06 '26

Other examples of patented game mechanics include the Sanity Meter from Eternal Darkness and the Nemesis System from Middle-Earth: Shadow of War.

5

u/FiddlesUrDiddles Jul 06 '26

Doom Eternal, kinda. The fight with Kalibas The Sightless Judge felt very Mother Brain coded

3

u/Yahyathegamer749 Jul 06 '26

Oh man that one annoying mini boss from Zero Mission, neat idea but a frustrating game of luck and timing your shots

9

u/-trom Jul 06 '26

Is it really considered that bad?

Just freeze the ringas in position so you get a straight shot at the brain, pump missiles in there, then make sure you stay on top of the ringas so you don’t get knocked off.

If I recall correctly…there’s a spot in the lava you can chill in and fire diagonal missiles at her. I could be thinking of another boss, though, like Kraid in Original Metroid

6

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 06 '26

Now try it on low%💀

6

u/-trom Jul 06 '26

Oh I have! I ran the shit out of MZM in HS.

Charge beams, patience, and pattern recognition, baby

2

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 06 '26

Time to do it again haha. Its one of the hardest challenges to go for 9% on hard mode. Dread 0% and Fusion 1% are easy in comparison

2

u/TonightSmall1212 Jul 06 '26

So now they can just throw it anywhere in their games, it’s in zero mission, super, fusion…

2

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 06 '26

It wasnt in Fusion btw! Only nestroid, super and ZM.

And well the Dread Central units are MB light but the patent wont work on em

4

u/TonightSmall1212 Jul 06 '26

The plant boss in fusion? It’s just an easier version of the mb fight flipped

2

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 06 '26

How the fuck didnt I ever see thar hahaha. You are right!

1

u/PieAppropriate8862 Jul 06 '26

"modern Metroid history?"

3

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 06 '26

Modern Metroid history means anything post Zero Mission. When the canon remakes began replacing the original titles. Otherwise I would include Nestroid and Metroid II in the ranking

Modern Metroid also is about storytelling. Beginning with Fusion and the Manga the story radically differently changed focus. Which began with Zero Mission aknowleging the manga and every subsequent game tying itself to the manga.

3

u/Lewa358 Jul 06 '26

Zero Mission itself is older now than the OG Metroid was when ZM released.

I feel like the words "modern Metroid" kinda have to include Dread as the oldest game...

3

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 06 '26

And even Dread is half a decade old fuuuuuuuu

3

u/Davedog09 Jul 07 '26

to me “Modern Metroid History” is when they stopped with the Prime series for a while, so everything after Prime 3

56

u/NerwanderR Jul 05 '26

The hardest room in ZM. Which part is giving you the most trouble?

63

u/zer1223 Jul 06 '26

Probably the everything, if I had to guess

16

u/Milk_Mindless Jul 05 '26

Looks like mother brain

Protip: Kill her before you die

5

u/xtellarfb_ Shinespark Enthusiast Jul 05 '26

This actually works 🤯🤯🤯

14

u/nulldriver Jul 05 '26

Try to get up to the top cornee. Once the eye laser goes by, drop down to the right block, crouch, and just sit there. The only thing that can threaten you there until you start doing things are the rings

  • Freeze the rings when they get close and leave them frozen. New ones won't appear until they're gone.
  • Mother Brain only fires her beam if you fall below eye level or she takes 5 missiles in damage (3 on Hard). Watch that your path to safety is clear when you're getting ready for the last hit of a round.
  • You can maximize damage per round by firing four regular missiles and then one super.

14

u/Anthony_daboom Jul 05 '26

There’s actually a little trick that makes the battle so much easier. Took me a few tries to figure it out, but if you jump straight up to the metal bar above Mother Brain, and fall straight down in morph ball, then you should land perfectly on the ledge facing mother brain. You can then crouch to shoot her, and the other targets coming at you, as long as you don’t move Lady.

Took me a bit, but it definitely makes quick work.

11

u/Just-Try-2533 Jul 05 '26

That’s Mother Brain. You’re supposed to kill her.

10

u/xtellarfb_ Shinespark Enthusiast Jul 05 '26

Tell me about it 😭

8

u/Tyjet66 Jul 05 '26

Wait until you try 9%...

7

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 05 '26

I have ptsd of low% ZM on hardmode

I 1% japanese Fusion twice for its two low% rewards. And I 0% Dread a lot of time for fun. But low% Zero Mission for its rewards was insanity

Unironically one of the hardest metroid challenges

3

u/Tyjet66 Jul 06 '26

MB, and parts of Tourain were absolutely brutal for sure!

Would still rather 9% ZM than RBO Super though haha

3

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 06 '26

Reverse Boss Order is hell

7

u/SapSacPrime Jul 05 '26

That right there is what we call a vast improvement over the original 😊 (seriously the original is unbelievably difficult).

3

u/Ill-Ask9205 Jul 06 '26

Nah clear all the Zebetites then run back out, fill health back from the Metroids (30 per pickup) and then bounce off the glass with rapid fire missiles. You should outlast her and nothing afterwards damages you.

7

u/Lake_Well77 Jul 05 '26

The finest security measures money can buy

8

u/Arch3m Jul 06 '26

The only bad part of that game.

6

u/karmakosmik1352 Jul 05 '26

what is what

4

u/Groundbreaking_Bag8 Jul 05 '26

If you destroy the red barriers leading up to Mother Brain, then go back to the previous room to refill your health and ammo by killing Cheerios, you can then go back to the save point, and the red barriers will still be gone when you return to Mother Brain's chamber. This allows you to save your ammo for Mother Brain herself.

5

u/510BrotherPanda Jul 06 '26

That's what it is

BS

6

u/PocketBuckle Jul 05 '26

An endgame challenge.

7

u/Metroid-fan Jul 05 '26

Barely more like mid game

6

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 05 '26

Shhhh

2

u/Metroid-fan Jul 06 '26

It's. A 22 year old game it's hardly a secret anymore

3

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Jul 06 '26

I know I know even Nintendo advertised it in their NSO release, but if OP is clueless why not let them be surprised

3

u/Rei0379 Jul 05 '26

Blublblubblub and blarring alarm

3

u/SnowyWendigo Jul 05 '26

Takes 35 missiles or 7 supers to kill. Takes 20 missiles or 4 supers to break open the glass. Takes 7 continuous missiles to open a zebetite

3

u/Aenris Jul 05 '26

Its Sunday, another person gets mad at Mother Brain in Zero Mission lol

For context: this was the final boss in the original Metroid. It's supposed to be this difficult. Somehow devs didn't modernized this fight (well, not too much) compared to Ridley or Kraid. They kept the overwhelming barrage of projectiles considering how much powerful this version of Samus is.

3

u/TimmyChips Jul 05 '26

I can hear the sound of Samus getting ping ponged and boiling in the lava

3

u/OL-Penta Jul 06 '26

Where tf are your energy tanks?!?

3

u/EnSebastif oh word Jul 06 '26

It's you, with a low amount of energy tanks.

2

u/Distinct_Cod_8383 Jul 05 '26

Samus everyday of her life

2

u/raybrans Jul 05 '26

Looks to be a brain. Of the mother variety.

2

u/NapoleonTheAfromite Jul 05 '26

This is what separates the boys from the men.

2

u/JDSpacer Jul 05 '26

I beat this game when I was 6 years old. You can do it; I believe in you!

2

u/KingBroly Dread Mode survivor Jul 05 '26

The game throws less projectiles at you when you fall in so you can get out.

2

u/Alex_The_Lucario421 Jul 05 '26

man, i hate this fight. hate the one in super too

2

u/HughmanRealperson Jul 05 '26

Freeze but don't destroy the rings. Stand on one block, jump to the other when she shoots. The screw attack destroys bullets.

Regular Missiles for damage, Supers for the tank.

2

u/starvacious Jul 05 '26

It’s a pain but you can do it. I struggled too.

2

u/BoonDragoon Jul 06 '26

It's an endgame skill check.

2

u/Ill_Internet_8447 Jul 06 '26

Guys if it was easier, it wouldn’t be a good final boss

2

u/TheZeroNeonix Jul 06 '26

This is the difficulty spike when the game suddenly transitions into a bullet hell. lol

2

u/Rusted_muramasa Jul 06 '26

With that many Energy Tanks, you'd better be playing on Hard. Otherwise you've got no one to blame but yourself.

2

u/strahinjag Jul 06 '26

First time?

2

u/Ill-Ask9205 Jul 06 '26

Yeah follow this up with a painfully bad, painfully long stealth sequence, the worst shinespark puzzle in the series, and absolutely no reason to go back through the game to get the remaining power ups, and you realize Zero Mission is the most overrated game in the series.

2

u/Noillimrev THE BABY Jul 06 '26

this was my pain today tbh

2

u/Clumsy_the_24 Jul 06 '26

Mother brain

2

u/Martonimos Jul 06 '26

Now do it again on hard mode with no energy tanks.

2

u/NovaPrime2285 Jul 06 '26

……. I had fun with ZH Mother Brain… 👀👉🏽👈🏽

2

u/LifeWulf Jul 06 '26

How I beat this recently: ignore the rings or shoot them with the beam, equip Super Missiles, shoot the crap out of the eye, jump up in the top right corner when Mother Brain fires back. Jump down, rinse and repeat. Only took me two tries. Granted you need to have stocked up on Super Missile tanks beforehand, if not then you’ll have to repeat a few more times with regular missiles.

2

u/EnvironmentalStick58 Jul 06 '26

Hardest boss in the ga

2

u/Unlucky_Turn_1773 Jul 06 '26

did this a few weeks ago and i probably would have given up as a kid playing this shit lol

2

u/beefquinton Jul 06 '26

i haven’t played zero mission but i’m guessing it’s the mother brain fight from that game. i’ve played nestroid and fusion, this is a combo of both. and it is the worst boss fight in nestroid, just sucks

2

u/Jeffotato Jul 06 '26

In my opinion it's a decently well designed boss fight because there's a simple pattern of the projectiles you need to pick up on and then you can keep dodging with minimal damage, you just have to be patient and not try to spam like crazy. Dodge, Dodge, Dodge, take the opportunity to shoot a little when you get it and go back to dodging, don't be afraid to skip an opportunity if the timing wasn't lined up well.

I found it infuriatingly impossible for like 3 attempts and then figured out the pattern and found it genuinely fun and satisfying to pull off after that.

2

u/Status-Platypus8309 Jul 06 '26

It’d be anti-climatic if she was too easy to beat. She is controlling the whole planet after all.

2

u/zonch84 Jul 06 '26

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this bitch sucks

2

u/DarkLink1996 Jul 06 '26

Well, it IS supposed to be the final boss

2

u/DreddEdwards Jul 06 '26

Easily one of the worst fight in the series…

2

u/CloackedChaos Jul 06 '26

It's a final boss what u expect

2

u/ianmars555 Jul 06 '26

Now now, go play the original NES game

2

u/Burglecutt69 Jul 06 '26

This boss fight and a certain shine spark puzzle pissed me off in this game.

2

u/AdministrationDry507 Jul 06 '26

This is a room of suffering

2

u/Chadwelli Jul 06 '26

You've reached the type 3 fun zone

2

u/EntrepreneurTough436 Jul 06 '26

After this boss u must escape the place, have fun :) If you panic or lose time, you will have to beat that boss again. Try to use missles. It is annoying that when you jump, on cannon may hit u and then a flying disc will give u another hit. Try to hit the discs, u may also get health. If u get into the lava, the animation will reset and you will not be able to hit the boss, so try to dodge the attack by jumping, croach and shoot, reapet this a few time using the missles

2

u/wam1983 Jul 06 '26

That was a challenge when I was 7. Games are supposed to be challenging at times.

2

u/__Decentralised Jul 06 '26

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

u/terra_GOD_404 Jul 06 '26

I can't believe I beat it first try on my second attempt, prolly did a mix of simply dodging mainly and supers with jumping over that MegaMan ass beam

2

u/knowhow101 Jul 06 '26

That'd be the final boss. Designed to challenge the players

2

u/smilph Jul 06 '26

i wasn’t aware people hated this part/thought it was hard. i quite like the ZM MB fight

2

u/Zye1984 Jul 06 '26

I find the Nestroid MB fight more annoying. Iirc I think I fired super missiles and screw-attack-jumped over MB's counter beam to destroy the rinkas. Over in a few seconds.

2

u/Jake_N_Bake95 Jul 06 '26

Ah yes the room of torment

2

u/Adventurous-Toe1250 Jul 07 '26

Iirc the beams can't hit you if you crouch on the back platform, so once you freeze the two ringos you'll have a window to get a few charge beams in

2

u/Historical_Kossola Jul 07 '26

I did not enjoy this boss fight. I prefer Fusion over Zero Mission, and this boss is one of the reasons why.

2

u/GoldenSunRM Jul 07 '26

This fight either ends in 10 seconds when you blast the eye with Super Missile or you get stuck in an infinite loop of coming back up and then getting shot in the acid again.

2

u/ThisDudeMitch Jul 08 '26

Yeah I've always just shown up with all e-tanks and then hammered.

I don't think I'd care to do this with real health constraints.

Godspeed.

2

u/ScootDeToot Jul 08 '26

It's the first time the game actually does difficulty. The main bulk of the game is just a fun, but easy breezy power fantasy.

2

u/Embarrassed-Plane763 Jul 11 '26

Come "merda"? É uno dei miei combattimenti preferiti! Mother Brain! Comunque ti capisco, é molto difficile, ma vedo che é Metroid:Zero Mission, quindi aspetta il finale, é bellissimo!

2

u/Revolutionary_Arm327 Jul 12 '26

That’s so real

0

u/omegamk3 Jul 05 '26

A skill issue lmao.

Ledge grab is your fucking friend. Same with ice beaming the spaghettios

0

u/CleanAd8632 Jul 05 '26

It was challenging at first, but on the 1st pedestal (farthest from Mother Brain) there is a sweet spot where you can stand relatively unmolested and fire your missiles at her. You'll get knocked down few times, but keep at it until you find that spot.

It really isn't "that" difficult.
