Other How Dread's free travel between Teleportals actually works

Post image

I've seen a lot of conflicting information online about how the free travel between Teleportals in this game is unlocked and wether or not you can travel to not yet discovered Teleportal colors. Since I've been replaying Dread, I took the chance to experiment a little at the end of the game. Here's what I figured out:

How do you unlock free travel between Teleportals?

The only way to unlock free travel between Teleportals is by entering Itorash at least once. It doesn't unlock after discovering and even using every Teleportal (yes, even back and forth)

Can you travel to every Teleportal after unlocking free travel?

No, you can not travel to any Teleportal. You can only travel to the Teleportals, of which you have discorvered at least one Teleportal of it's colors pair. You don't need to interact with a Teleportal, for it to be added to free travel. Discovering it on the map is enough.
I was able to teleport to the cyan Teleportal in Burenia even though I did not discover it yet. I only discovered it's matching color in Ferenia and they were both added to my free travel even though I never interacted with either of them.

What about Teleportal colors you didn't discover yet?

If you have never discovered either of a given colors Teleportals, none of them will be added to free travel.
I did not have any of the orange Teleportals on my map and after entering Itorash, they were still undicovered and did not get linked to my free travel. Only after dicovering one of them, did the game add both orange Teleportals to my free travel.

The wiki says: "Once she has reached Itorash, the Teleportals can transport Samus to any other Teleportal that she has discovered, including ones she has not yet used."
That is correct, but it's missing the information, that you only need to discover one of a colors Teleportals, for the game to add both of that pair to free travel.

I hope my explanation was able to clear up some of the confusion surrounding the free travel in this game. They really should've had the unlocking requirement be a little sooner. I feel like a lot of people don't even know that free travel exists, cause they don't turn back after entering Itorash. Also have the free travel message pop up, upon entering Itorash and not once you step into a Teleportal after that point

I find it really funny how many people don’t know this. The game tells you about this the first time you use a teleportal after reaching Itorash. I guess most people just skip through it?

True enough, but (especially the first time you play) Itorash is highly telegraphed to be the endgame. So either players avoid it entirely to go further explore the map, not unlocking this feature, or they just push through to the end, never going back and realizing it was unlocked.

This is exactly what I do each playthrough. I think I ended the game half a dozen times before I read about this in reddit

I think a lot of people probably go and collect all items before actually going to Itorash, if they know it's the final area. I've been watching a youtuber play through the game and in the latest episode he did not go to itorash because he was afraid he wouldn't be able to return and collect more items.
I think on my first playthrough I actually did skip the message and I only realized afterwards when I wanted to teleport again

Like you said, it requires the player to use a teleportal.

And every play through, I’ve completed 100% collection without taking teleportals past that point.

You only need to find one of each color. It counts even if you didn't interact with it yet, as long as it's on your map

I.... never knew this existed. But I got 100% items before taking on the final boss so I guess I never had any reason to.

It can be useful to hop in and out of Itorash after you get the power bombs, just to make your last round through the map with all abilities more convenient

wheeze. It would have made clean up so much faster. There were definitely a few times I had to cross from Cataris to Burenia the long way across Artaria :') I'll remember it for my next playthrough...

This is great! I actually just discovered this mechanic during my replay that I just finished earlier this week. I coincidentally discovered my last teleporters and the mechanic in the exact same order as you. Didn’t figure out that visiting Itorash was the qualifying event though (I assumed it was my failed attempt at Raven Beak before going back to 100% the item cleanup).

u/WannabeSokka01 1d ago

The ability to travel freely between Teleportals, regardless of their colors

Once you do to itorash the first time and come back to Hanubia, the teleportals will stop operating in locked pairs and let you travel from any one portal to another one. Additionally, if you have found one portal but not its match, both will then be available.

I remember unlocking this my first time 100%ing the game but years later I forgot the trigger and just 100% it without unlocking free teleport. Glad to know this is the condition!

I’m pretty sure the orange teleportal is the only one you don’t automatically discover through normal gameplay.

Its a neat one though as you can find it fairly early on letting you teleport to a small section of ghavoran and get the scan ability early

What?!!

Where is this teleporter in Itorash? Or is it any other teleporter you go into? I'm confused

Oh nvm

Yes! What they should have done was had a special teleportal in Itorash that activates the free travel. A special color without a pair. Then it would be really obvious what’s going on.
