For 30 years this was the most watched super bowl performance, and this was before widespread internet, streaming, social media etc. 130 million people watched it on live TV. Nobody ever had that much fame and aura before social media, internet and live streaming.

Plus, super bowl show performances like this one where even people from other countries or that didn't like the sport would stop to see It, as a concept, kinda started with MJ right?

Halftime used to be marching bands lol. I know there's some story behind it came to be. I want to say the year before, Fox ran a new episode of In Living Color at halftime, taking viewers away from the Super Bowl halftime broadcast. The NFL was a little upset, so they made sure the next year nobody would be changing the channel.

130 million people in the USA. Check out how many people watched worldwide!!!!! Look it up!!

There are no reliable statistics regarding viewership outside North America. American football is a relatively niche sport outside of the USA, and while Super Bowl was and still is being broadcast in many countries by far the most viewers would have come from America.

I agree...no reliable back in those days. But people were watching globally. There are estimates.
Comparison of Global Estimates
1.3 Billion: A frequently cited industry estimate for the total global audience across 86 countries.
1 Billion: A more conservative global estimate mentioned by some industry journals like Amusement Business.

Do you have a source for that?
If 130 million people watched it in America there is no chance that a billion more people watched it overseas. The Super Bowl does not have the same signififance outside of America.
Not to mention that because of the time difference it would have been broadcasted in the middle of the night in large part of the world.
The world’s population was around 5.5 billion back then. So that means that every fifth person in the world watched a championship game of a sport that isn’t particularly popular outside of North America?
It’s a completely made up number that has no basis in reality.
The most popular sports broadcasts in history have been the FIFA world cup finals in recent years, which have attracted over a billion viewers. Soccer is by far much much more popular than American football, it’s not even close.

Eeh.. People didn't watch this event for the sport aspect you know, and neither was it because of the game the TV stations bought the rights to air it. Guess what it was that draw the attention.

I saw this performance. The only artist I’ve seen get a standing ovation for just standing in one spot.

u/Sarcosaur May 09 '26
Wow ... What was the audience thinking when he did that?!
Genuine ?

I found it on YouTube to show my granddaughter. I searched Michael Jackson superbowl. It was in 1993.

So he did this on his Dangerous tour in the Bucharest performance. They were very busy removing the fainted people during those 2 minutes. You can find it on YouTube.

His energy and performance level of both singing and dancing was amazing for anyone - but considering he suffered from lupus?? It caused his lung to collapse when he was still with the Jackson 5 and overworked. It reduces one’s lung capacity as well…so it truly blows my mind to the beyond HOW he managed to pull off the intensity he did year after year and still sing at that level WHILE dancing like he did!
AND always be kind and humble and generous and never snap at anyone offstage either despite all the pain he was in and ridicule he received about his skin and sensitivity to sun and light in his eyes, etc. And he never made excuses by telling anyone about his health issues like the vitiligo until he had to in 1993 because people had decided he was rejecting being black and whatever else.
Truly a remarkable human being to go through all the rigorous physical and emotional demand from 5 years on and still turn out to be such a humanitarian and have so much love for people and nature and be an amazing performer. No wonder he resonated with the song “Smile”.
Honestly as bad he was treated by the press and people mocking him, his sister La Toya really blows my mind how she survived being married to the abusive manager her dad introduced her to who constantly beat almost killed her and controlled her life for like a DECADE???!! And after escaping and him racking up a bunch of debt in her name before the divorce went through-after just like a year of hiding, she still managed to go back out to public performances as well! The Jacksons didn’t just come from a town a steel mill…they are literally all made of some kind of steel!! His mother as well! To be so religious and yet married to a man who cheated on her so much he fathered a child with another woman and still be with him and invite the girl to live with them and be a mother to her too! And then to take on 3 more kids at age 83 when MJ passed!! And she is still going at 95!! STEEL! Most all of them!

The rating of the performance was more than the football. People literally switched on their TV just to see his performance and switched it off after it ended.

Michael Jackson was THE aura farmer, every pose he did was iconic, there will never be another man like him :(

u/Racla360 May 08 '26
It was not like that. He call the director of the show one day before the show. He told him that he wants to try something new and the cue to start the show was to remove the sunglasses.

u/bayoyayo12 May 08 '26
The post doesn't say otherwise

u/Racla360 May 08 '26
The post says that he only agree to perform the show when they had total control over the show. It was not like that.

You are right!! People keep saying, Taylor Swift, The Weekend... I've never heard a song by either of them in my life, and I probably never will. These celebrities don't have the electricity, the universal message that Michael had - Michael was not full of himself, he was simply doing what he was put here on this planet to do, to the best of his ability, and his heart came right along with him. You can see in the expressions in his face on stage that he is raw and his heart is right there beating just for that moment. These other stars are too curated. Michael - the real man and the music are one. That's the difference ❤️
