It’s mean to represent the Thriller era tho. The image is lazily doctored to look like it’s from the Thriller era. The case is marked ‘Thriller period’.

This is the original photo. As far as I understand, it's from the Bangkok concert of the HIStory Tour on November 5, 1996.

Its not. Take a look at how the toe stand looked in Motown 25: his knees are way farther to the left and so is his feet.

The right two look like Thriller era, but top left looks like OTW, and bottom left looks like Bad.

I'm not going to lie it always annoyed and irritated me when this first came out back in 2003 and they tried to play us like that was him from the Thriller era. And then when that picture resurfaced on the back of the essential Michael Jackson I was like ahhhh so that's where that photo came from and they just heavily edited it

Well he didn’t do a tour for Thriller (instead opting for a Victory Tour with The Jacksons). And maybe the music videos for the singles on Thriller at the time just didn’t provide the designers with something they could use that would fit the style. And figured that the photo of him performing Billie Jean during the HIStory Tour worked better than anything else.

Probably because it was his most successful album and he's performing Billie Jean in that which was like his most successful song so probably because of that
