This is posted all the time, and yes when I always a kid in the 1990's not even in middle school we roamed around the woods and streets all the time. I walked the dog alone at age six.

I roamed the neighborhood when I was 6-7 (my gen alpha kid would be laughing hysterically) with my friends. We would run around to each other's houses and the park.. getting snacks, and going on adventures. If my mother knew how far I had roamed, Holy shit, would I have been in trouble. Im fortunate now to where my biggest problem for my kid is summertime wildlife (rattlesnakes) and hot weather. Im not ready to let her roam alone quite yet, even though we're extremely remote and quite literally everyone knows everyone where we live.. she's still too little. Maybe in 6 months. We'll see.

I remember, this being pre mobile phone, being asked to check in regularly and using phonebooths to place reverse-charges calls home to let mum know I was still broadly alive.
