Didn't they just sentence a mother to 7 months in prison because she let her 5 year old walk unsupervised in their gated community alone, in the vicinity of a pond?

Working as a 911 dispatcher for years I couldn't tell you how many calls I've been involved in where kids around that age, and even a little older, drowned because they were allowed to wander around bodies of water unsupervised. Pools, ponds, creeks, or anything in between doesn't matter.

I think what she was charged with and sentenced to was extreme overkill, but that's just too young to be around bodies of water without someone older to watch and help them if the worst comes to pass.

The real tea here is that people need to be training their kids to swim from babies age. This shit should be subsidized by the govt

Children should be taught to swim, and a lot of things should be paid for by the gov't, but 5yo is still too young to be around a body of water unsupervised even if they know how. It's not worth the risk.

Plus I’ve read that early swimming lessons are shown to actually give parents false confidence and lax supervision of their kids near water.

I could definitely see that, especially with young kids. Young kids are just still not physically string enough or experienced enough, imo, to be unsupervised in water
