Nostalgia Millennials when you're lying in bed at night, do you ever randomly remember some relatively minor social missteps or poorly chosen words you did/said years earlier? And then beat yourself up over it even though it really wasn't a big deal? If so, what happened?

Id like to know your stories.

Always. One that still makes me cringe was when I was in my first year of residency rounding on a patient with uncontrolled diabetes who just had a below the knee amputation. He was septic and encephalopathic at the time the decision was made to proceed, so he woke up pissed that part of his leg was gone.

In my best doctor voice, I squat down by the bed so I was at eye level and told him that we’d take his recovery “one step at a time”. This was in front of my whole team too. Still keeps me awake some nights.

I was a nurse, and I've said some dumb shit to vulnerable patients, so i feel this in the pit of my stomach, all the way down [to my feet, and I'm going to hell with you].

Lol, I'm so sorry this happened to you, but thanks for the cackle.

I've done something like this before.

I don't even wait til I go to bed...

But no, I'm not saying anything. They were dumb enough the first time

Yes, and that's called rumination. It's actually related to anxiety and Incredibly detrimental to your brain and mental health. Ask me how I know. It's a struggle to break that cycle but holy cow you got to.

Shit I should talk to my therapist about this.

Omg, story of my life …

I have a few stories like this, but there’s one in particular that still haunts me. Three years ago I worked in marketing at a real estate company. I was in a meeting and we were going around the table talking about what we were working on.

I’m not sure why this happened. I was tired and I guess I was bored during the meeting and zoning out. When it was my turn to share, I started describing that I was working on text for online ads. I meant to say that I was working on “banners” for the “home page” and somehow both of those got merged and I said I was working on “boners.”

I wanted to die. I continued on my report like nothing happened. When I was done, there was an awkward silence and then my boss just bursted out laughing. I started trying in vain to explain myself.

I ended up leaving that job about a month later …

I still think about that incident multiple times a week!

At least that one was funny. I'd use it to help the jrs calm their nerves when they have yo do a presentation

I think everyone does this

Yes. OP is fishing for content. But hell, who doesn't do that these days either. We're all gonna read it too because we need that sweet release from reality.

Plenty of times, but it’s only been recently I’ve learned to exercise the willpower to push those types of thoughts out of my head when they pop up.

It’s too late to correct those social missteps and the people I “wronged” are either over it, didn’t think it was that big of a deal, or have their own mental baggage I wish them the best getting through.

Several years ago I brought my son to a different doctor during a medical emergency. When I got to the part of the form to fill in our usual doctor, I completely spaced and wrote Abu Dhabi. Later that night his actual name (Abdul) popped up in my head and I was MORTIFIED. They probably thought that was the most basic, ignorant American, white girl ish they had ever seen. I still cringe.

When my second kid was 7, he fell and broke both of his arms, we were in ED filling out paper work and I couldn't remember his DOB, and he couldn't remember his birth date either, so i awkwardly had to leave it blank (I just wrote his age) and I went to the desk later but they got his details from his name anyway. Adrenaline is the worst!

YES.
Sometimes i will get a random flashback of an embarassing moment from decades ago in the middle of the day and that thought will keep me up literally all night.
But ill just tell myself that this embarassing memory is only in my head. For anyone else it could've be a normal Tuesday and they didnt notice/forgot about it 😭

Why wait until I’m in bed at night reliving when I told a server “you too!” when they told me to enjoy my meal

2

u/Slim_Margins1999 2h ago

I’ve def enthusiastically told the ticket collector at the theater “you too” when they said enjoy the show. Numerous times. Haha

6

u/Day_Old_Paper 3h ago

My tic when that happens is that I involuntarily mutter the word “barf” out loud.

Constantly, brain loves to tease instead of sleeping

3

u/CulturalFondant474 4h ago

I got a weird skill that lets me fall asleep in a 10 min period after I lay down. My brain can torture me after I get to sleep like normal 🙃

4

u/MinuetInUrsaMajor 3h ago

Yeah except it happens constantly throughout my day and prompts me to shout a slur uncontrollably.

I have learned that I cannot tell this to people because people are fucking morons that don’t understand the word “uncontrollably”

I was about 15 and my crush and his friend group were way in to playing instruments and starting a metal band.

I went over to crushes house and it was me, him and his best friend. They wanted me to do vocals while they played guitar to make a song; I can’t carry a tune in a bucket and have no knowledge of musical timing.

So we tried it out a bit and I’m panicking because I have no idea what or when to sing/scream/wail so I pretended to have a phone call and frantically called my dad and my grandma on my sweet ass Pantech C300 (both not answering) to come get me because I was so anxious. Left voicemails and since no one was answering I went back up and tried again…until both my dad and grandma showed up at the same time. I left in complete embarrassment but tried to play it cool.

Anyway I ended up marrying the best friend like 12 years later and the subject has never come up but I think about it constantly when I hear certain songs. Life long embarrassment there.

I was in a play once and the setup was a courtroom style play. I was in the gallery and my chair was at the edge and I didn't know it but the leg went over the side and took me with it. My dress went over my head. I think about that regularly.

One of my best friends from school recently apologised to me for a few things that happened back then that they felt terrible about for all these years. Honest to goodness, I had no memory of any of them. I told her so, but I accepted her apology anyway, since it obviously mattered to her. Makes me feel slightly better about those late night thoughts.

u/see_twoo 3h ago

Put my away message admitting to liking my crush and they never logged on that night o_o

u/Ancient-Dog00 4h ago

One time I was in a bathroom stall and I heard a woman get in the stall next to me and say “hey, how are you?” I thought it was super weird but I started responding “I’m fine… how are you?” And it went on like that for a little while until we both came out of the stalls and I realized she was on the telephone.

I still regret pretending to know how to play the piano during my grade 3 talent show.

The possibilities are endless.

We rememeber but they probably never even gave it a second thought.

u/TheDukeofArgyll Millennial 3h ago

It happened a ton in my 30s but I feel like my 40s is about finally letting go of that shit.

3

u/Daley1929 2h ago

Yes. And I have an audible reaction to myself. I can’t keep my shame in.

2

u/Hurka_Durka 4h ago

Countless examples if I'm being honest. Doesn't help that I really don't like the person I was from like 17 to 27 or so.

2

u/ConnectKale 3h ago

Absolutely NOT. If my brain does that it is because I am stressed. Recognize, acknowledge and find something else to think about.

2

u/Q-Money1985 3h ago

You mean you don’t just think about that stuff 24/7?!?

A three second choice 28 years ago still haunts me to this day.

•

u/lonely_company_ 40m ago

Yeah. Thats rumination and social anxiety. When I was younger it was vicious and lasted all day.

13+ years sobriety, 15+ years in therapy and a diagnosis of autism + CPTSD, it’s much better.

All that is to say it’s worth really trying to figure out the different puzzle pieces because many of us have a bunch of things going on.

So when I went to hand in my ballot the guy kind of held out his hand in a handshake kind of way and it made me glitch out so I tried to shake his hand aggressively like trying to catch a fish and he was like “uh no I’ll take the ballot” and I think about it too frequently.

•

u/jacantu 47m ago

I waited tables for a long time and when people were done ordering, I’d place my hand in the middle and while saying, “Let me get these menus out of the way.” About 1/3 of the time, I got a handshake which always got a good laugh out of the table and me.

u/Siny_AML 4h ago

I keep on remembering these two girls in high school who sat in front of me in Physics. One of them kept her thong on full view in front of me and constantly would somehow be on gym team the next period. It took me 20 years to figure it out.

1

u/03263 4h ago

Not really, I don't have a good memory for those things but I remember places really well so I can imagine my workplace from 20 years ago and all the people there but pretty much zero specific events or interactions. Even most of their names escape me, but not the faces.

Of course. I’m OCD. 🤣

Most of the time, yeah. The other times, I am just tired and want to sleep.

It is mostly just random stuff that reminds of something stupid I said or did.

Yup, was on a tv competition show and nothing happened bc of what happened but I always imagine one of the people there randomly talk shit randomly about “remember that one girl who”

•

u/Being_Haved 22m ago

At my elementary school there were two kindergarten classes and in the middle of the classrooms were shared bathrooms. They could be accessed by either class. Two toilets with no stalls. One day, I was excused to the bathroom and when I got in, another little girl from the other class was already seated on one of the toilets. I went to sit and she began to sing. Before I know it, I’ve joined in and we are realllly getting into it. I finish and walk back to story time where I sit next to my crush. My kindergarten teacher says to me (in front of everyone) “(name), you need to be more quiet in the bathroom.” Then my crush leans in and whispers in my ear “that was you?!”. I could have died. I’ve remembered it ever since 😂

For a VERY brief period of time, I was convinced gay men shouldn’t be allowed to adopt children even though I was always pro-gay marriage.

Now I support gay and Trans people taking over the government completely, (I’m mostly serious.), and of course adopting children. 🙂

No. It's mostly me worrying about the future, not the past.
