Nostalgia How many of us frequented internet cafes in 90s/2000s?

My kid doesn’t believe me that we had to go to the Internet station and pump our Internet there.

Had to walk 5 miles through the snow, uphill both ways. Carrying internet on our backs to keep the school warm.

That's weird when you think about it haha, but those were the days of a life not yet fully connected.

Friend of mine actually had hand crank internet. It related to his modem and mouse sharing an IRQ, and downloads stalling if he didn't keep the mouse moving.

Had one near me that was aimed at gaming, friends and I played so much battlefield 1942

Every now and then I get a wild hair and think I’ll join one of the active servers then realize my memories of that game are probably best left in the past, where it was perfect to my teenage mind lol
2
u/Lucky_Development359 4h ago
Exactly, I tried and was like "this is dog shit"🤣
2
u/InkedInspector 4h ago
I’m glad you did the science for me lol, confirmed I should leave it enshrined in the hall of fame in my mind

u/Lucky_Development359 4h ago
Battlefield Vietnam was also a great one. My (this is not politically correct I am aware) friends and I would just yell Vietnamese words/sounds at one another from across the room. (GOAT soundtrack as well)
...I just got a craving for some Mt.Dew Code Red
2
u/InkedInspector 4h ago
You had code red, the game cafe I was playing at served Bawls, you can imagine the jokes from a group of 15-17 year old boys.
2
u/Lucky_Development359 3h ago
Good God🤣
Well if you are still playing and don't want to need to be jacked up caffeine to play (Like modern BF and COD) check out Hell Let Loose. Definitely scratched the BF 1942 itch and then some for me.

u/InkedInspector 3h ago
Yeah is was such an insane idea to name a drink that, and to make the bottle practically look like a sex toy. It’s still around to this day shockingly.
I may have to check that out, granted most my gaming these days is limited to Resident Evil or Zelda releases.

u/AFlyingToaster 3h ago
Same. I loved it too. The one by me would do lock-ins with all the pizza and Bawls you wanted. It didn't last long, but the few years it was around were amazing.

u/InkedInspector 3h ago
You weren’t around Chattanooga by chance? lol
Same thing the spot I went to did.

Only while traveling abroad. Didn't have Internet in our pockets

u/ryaaan89 4h ago
This is also the only time I’ve done this, some hotels had computers in the lobby but not many. We had to check our emails and our myspaces lol.

I moved lived in Korea 98-02 the cafe scene was insane then. Literally every single male teen in existence at least spent some time in them
5
u/BurantX40 4h ago
Only a handful of times.
I had a capable PC at home, but my friends at the time didn't. So in service of us enjoying it together, it was cool.
After that, my friends that I had in college, we built our PC's and were there right as the mainstream console games starting to cross over on PC, and through Steam.

We didn't have internet cafes where I am, but I would frequently go to the library to use the internet, and on the occasion I went to the local science centre, I would spend most of my time in the computer section where I could use the internet there, too.

u/Hakuna_Matoto 4h ago
Holy fuck. I forgot about Internet cafes in GTA 4 lmao. And no, I never went to one. 35yo millennial here.

The one near me would have game nights where everyone would play StarCraft tournaments. Made some great friends there

I and a small group of friends would go to a local net cafe to play, mostly, counterstrike. The place was setup with 20 computers in tight quarters all on the same lan. They also had several Xbox and PlayStations setup. Lots of fun for a good half decade.

In 2002, I went on a student exchange thing for a month in Australia where I would use Internet cafes. Stateside, I just used the family computer we all shared in the computer room.

u/ldskyfly 4h ago
I only ever did this a couple times in the military when the Internet was down in my room

Someone opened an internet Cafe around 2004 in our small town of 2200 people. My brother and his friends went often in the summer to play counterstrike. Idk how he made any money in such a small town. I don't remember anyone being there besides my brother's small group of friends. Before that place opened up, they would carry their PCs to one friend's house and all play runescape together

Card shop + Internet cafe was my main hangout from 99-2001. EverQuest, CounterStrike, and Magic the Gathering from after school until they kicked us out.

I went to the the loud ones where we played Counter Strike and insulted each other's mom from across the room.

We didn't have internet cafes. I've hardly even heard of them. We had libraries and school libraries, that was it.

My small town got an internet Cafe as they were dying out. The place did fantastic pizzas though.
They lasted about 3 years before shutting up shop.

I did a three week bike trip on the west coast in 2008 and remember needing to find an Internet cafe in Portland to check my email.
In high school in 2001 my friends and I went to an Internet cafe a few times to play counter strike and stuff

My town had a great one, we’d play a lot of counter strike, StarCraft, Warcraft 3 and the like. They would have all night sleepovers sometimes where we’d just game all night and get off our gourds on mt dew and other caffeinated beverages in order to stay up. Good times

Used to game at them quite a bit from late 2000's to early 2010's. Even if we all had our own consoles it was fun to meet in a third space and play LAN games.

Never had the need for one. Had internet at home from when I was about 10 or 11 and never looked back.

Went to one in our nearby city with friends when foal up was still relatively common. A bunch of us had sort of a giant LAN party and it was a ton of fun.

As someone who spent their teenage years in Korea / china in the 2000s, these internet cafes were ubiquitous. So many nights spent skipping study sessions to play CS
1
u/skrzaaat 2h ago
I used to skip school and go to one, or go to internet cafe when I visited grandparents
1
u/GothicLighthouse 2h ago
I did a few times, but sadly the ones around me just didn’t last very long…before I got to frequent them more that couple time they’d already closed 😐
I loved them more for the novelty than anything else tbh

I never went to an actual cafe, but did spend money at the internet booths in Trucks Stops. I had to check my hotmail while on the road with my parents.

u/ashandare 2h ago
TBH first time I was in an internet cafe like this was a PC Bang in Korea in the 2010s.

I have some great memories from visiting our local LanWerx and playing some battlefield tournaments there

My friends and I used to meet up at the local internet cafe to play Counter-Strike and Starcraft. We stopped going after some guy got stabbed in the head by a screwdriver by a fellow player in the same internet cafe.

In a very rural town where all there existed at the most was 14k dial-up, an Internet cafe opened up with 256k DSL and you bet your ass they made a shitload of money off of teens wanting to play Delta Force II online mode.
