Discussion How to come up with city names?

This is the city ive been working on building for the last year and a half i think (the walls are under renovations) and i need a better name for it i think. It was originally called redwood retreat, then solendor and now im wanting to change it again. I also want to name the continent so rhe world itself can have a better name than "forever world" but i havent come up with anything yet

use surrounding features to help with ideas. or what are they known for in that city? and historical battles you created in the lore there? make a fictional language and create a name based on that. that's how a lot of real-world names are created, and that's what I do in my world. my dwarven castle underground is named Arthenál-the-under

I like to lean on historical city names, my favorite lore at the moment, and sometimes etymology.

I've got a site named frankfort using the ol Charlemagne logic (it's a raid base)

Right now I'm working on a dig site I've named solituted after Skyrim, it jutts out of the mountains nicely.

My home base is named orsus after the Latin word for begining.

Its completely normal to do, as well. There are many cities in the Americas that have no connection to their namesakes other than the founder thought "yeah I like that name"

you could name it something from the natural terrain around it

Find a system and stick to it.

There are many resources online and on YouTube especially that go over all kinds of world building elements. This is how authors select names too, so if you’re seeking a perfect name, world building resources are your best bet.

Those walls are huge! May be have the name define sanctuary? The place looks cold so may be use old Norse language?

I also struggle with this, but I try to attach it to my own identity as a player. Because my username is CarlyRaeJepsen69, my base city is called Raejepistan (and i had previous names before I settled on that)

Name it after the great Canadian town of Flin Flon

I don’t think there’s any one correct way to go about naming a settlement, there could be all kinds of approaches. That being said, maybe just try brainstorming a few ideas, and if any of them are along good lines, why not give it a go?

I name things either after features in the area or movie/tv/anime references
