A really different mayor to appeal to the 80%?

• Upvotes

For context - I grew up in Mississauga, have been gone a few decades, just moved back here from NYC.

I'm astonished at how ridiculously low the voter turnout is in Mississauga. And it had me thinking about how Mamdani won, in part, not by getting all the voters to switch to vote for him, but by connecting with the disenfranchised working class.

Well really it was the community groups that were composed of those folks who created the conditions for Mamdani, who selected Mamdani, and then worked with their community to vote for Mamdani - ensuring that he represented *them*.

But the point is, it was the brown aunties and uncles, the taxi drivers, and so many more people who didn't vote because they saw a bunch of middle of the road folks who once elected, didn't care about them at all. Mamdani was like "No I will be YOUR mayor.. so take a chance and vote".

And it is pretty amazing how *in it* he is. I had never seen any previous NYC mayor (it's a big city), and I saw Mamdani speak once at our local park, my friend saw him at a little rally she was at where he spoke, etc. He's a person who's out there "where the people are", to quote the Little Mermaid.

Mississauga has a few mayoral candidates that, from my point of view, are all more or less the same. Yes some are a tiny bit more conservative or a tiny bit more progressive, but if I were to draw them on a graph they'd all be around the center. And they're all doing the same ol' same ol' to make their platform and market and connect with community.

It feels like given the 80% who don't vote here, a candidate who is *completely different* and shakes things up and tries to get the *other* 80% would really succeed here. Heck, they'd only need to get like.. 20% of that 80% to believe that maybe they won't be yet another status quo, and they'd win.

Have your building's heat been turned on yet?

Nighttime temperatures are consistently below 10⁰ and our building's manager still has not turned on the heat. Its a hot water system that takes a couple of days to heat up.

I think our building manager is sadistic.

Buddhist history and teachings talk on in Mississauga this weekend

Spotted this one and thought a few people here might be interested, especially if you've been curious about Buddhism or looking for something reflective to do this weekend.

Buddhist History and Core Teachings is happening at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto on October 18. It's a talk covering the history of Buddhism alongside its core teachings, so it sounds like a good entry point whether you're new to the subject or just want a deeper look.

Worth a visit if that kind of thing interests you, the temple itself is a nice space too.

I would take either over nothing but I think between the two the answer is pretty obvious

Take a moment to visit the link and share it with others. Canada's only motor oil producer is facing retirement despite being a viable business. Let's make sure people hear the story and understand what's at stake.

PSA: Prepare for Halloween

Hello, fellow neighbours,

Every year, on Halloween night or the next day, I see posts with disappointment that few children knocked on their doors. Others are surprised how quickly they ran out of candy.

I have observed:

  1. Word gets around. Kids talk to each other. For very young children, parents talk to each other.
  2. Trick-or-treaters choose streets, not individual houses. Unless your house has an amazing reputation or decorations that draw people to the entire street, the number of trick-or-treaters depends on how popular your street is for trick-or-treating. A street with history of several well decorated houses or good candy givers is more likely to attract trick-or-treaters this year.

So one house may run out of candy early while another wonders where the children went.

If you want to attract more trick-or-treaters, start putting out pumpkins or Halloween decorations early. The reverse also applies. 😄

If you have put in all that effort and turnout is still slow, I suggest that you leave a bowl of candy outside and walk around your neighbourhood. Enjoy the decorations. Halloween is a great time to enjoy the neighbourhood in a good light and Christmas is almost 2 months away.

Happy Halloween in advance!

Thoughts on 1315 Silver Spear Road?

Hi folks. I'm sick of Signet incompetence where I live, and after some research, 1315 Silver Spear Road came across my feed. It has no Google Maps reviews, which are always a great source of tenant information, but there are none. Does anyone live or has anyone lived there? I'm eager to hear what you have to say. tks

Recommendations Any trustworthy and skilled jeweler recommendations in Sauga?

Hi all! I have a ring that i’m wanting to swap the stone out for a different stone. I have the original ring and also have the new stone I want, but don’t know of a good place to take the ring and the stone for this modification. I understand is not as simple as swapping stones and will require some re-doing of parts of this ring.

Any recommendations?

Recommendations Can anyone recommend 1 day volunteer opportunities in Mississauga between now and the end of the year?

I have 2 paid volunteer days from work that I'd like to use but, I'm brand new to Mississauga and don't know the city well enough to know where to go. The city website wasn't helpful for short term opportunities.

Photos & Media I mapped every Mississauga postal code. L5M (Churchill Meadows) has more people than any postal code in Toronto

I met someone recently who’d memorized every postal code in the GTA. I’d name a street and they’d instantly tell me the first three characters. So I made a map to learn them, and Mississauga had a few surprises:

All 22 Mississauga codes run from L4T (Malton) to L5W (Meadowvale Village)

L5M (Churchill Meadows) has 106,468 people, more than any code in Toronto. Toronto’s biggest, M2N, has 75,100

L4V is basically Pearson Airport, with 5 residents

Hurontario & Burnhamthorpe is where three codes meet: L5B, L4Z and L5A

You can tap any code to see its neighbourhoods and the streets on its edges, search any address or intersection, and quiz yourself: torontopostalcodes.ca

How many Mississauga codes can you place without looking?
