Social To everyone asking how to socialize at UofT: TALK TO THE PEOPLE IN YOUR CLASSES AND BE CONSISTENT

This post was initially much shorter, but I was feeling bored and the creative spirit took the reigns. Alas, such is life.

As much as I low-key enjoy the ritual of pouring myself a bowl of popcorn, opening Reddit, and reading all the early 1st semester experience commiserating, I'm also high-key annoyed by seeing the same post for the umpteenth time a la Buzz Lightyear clone meme. I like variety in my Reddit ragebait, and even a good slice of matcha crepe cake becomes unappetizing after consuming it so often.

For those of you who have decided to come to UofT to get a world class education, rather than just partying all the time, ignoring your work, being forced to drop out around the holidays because your grades are lower than the Mariana Trench, then blaming the university for allegedly sabotaging you, your classes are your best possible environment to connect with your fellow slightly more intelligent than a chimpanzee primates.

Presumably you are studying something that you actually enjoy or have some mild interest in, rather than doing exactly what mom and dad told you to study. If your parents strongarmed you to go into engineering but you truly love film, that's a whole other discussion and will require some soul searching and potentially family therapy.

The basis of most human connection nowadays comes through shared interests and values. This is a fact supported by at least one (1) corpus of psychology literature. The courses you're taking already filter for this to an extent, because, again, ideally you're studying something you care about and you're not a masochist.

Performative drinking at a venue with mysteriously sticky floors that probably haven't been cleaned in the past year and contain a collection of undocumented microorganisms that would frighten epidemiologists, ignoring your limits, and chatting up the people you live in close proximity to about the weather (so how about that climate change, eh?) while waiting to use the one sink you all need to brush your teeth at (please brush your teeth and don't go out with bad breath) doesn't necessarily lead to any meaningful connection. You might become acquaintances, but presumably you're aiming for something with a bit more zest.

Coursework at UofT is difficult, and that difficulty is another basis for connection. Throughout most of human history, we connected with each other because of shared hardship. Genuine hardship, such as intellectually strenuous subjects and work schedules, for example. Missing out on a frat party on one specific weekend, which is identical to the frat parties on every other weekend (don't worry, the beer will still be lukewarm) isn't hardship, I'm afraid.

"But how do I actually talk to people in my classes?! Nobody ever wants to talk!" says the choir of Buzz Lightyear clones lamenting about their "unique" circumstances. The answer: just start.

You'd be surprised how much the person sitting next to you is starved for acknowledgement of their mere existence. A random "hello" will probably be the most unsolicited contact they've had in a week. The barrier to entry is lower than it's ever been.

"But what if they think I'm cringe?" or "Everyone is so cringe!", which is the next verse of the clone choir song.

If you're actively worried either of these things, you don't want connection bad enough. Either that or you might want to look into therapy.

I cannot tell you how much social media has poisoned people's perceptions of themselves and others. These platforms have fed people the most ironclad set of lies that every government psyop wishes it could replicate. Its users have been perfectly manipulated into thinking they they are unlikable/unlovable, and that everyone else is so much better or so much worse and should be perceived as a threat. This primes you to be a good little consumer that will sign up for things like dating apps, paid meetup groups, and overpriced fitness clubs, all to solve your woes. Meanwhile, you can connect with someone FOR FREE* (included in the price of your tuition costs) and walk away with something even more meaningful. This is an even crazier value for money than the Japanese food truck in front of Robarts that will sell you an entire filling tempura roll for under $8.

Side note: please support this truck. This is my lifeblood and I want them to stay in business as long as possible. Also, the lady who owns it is genuinely one of the kindest people I've ever come across and brightens my day. My waistline grows, my wallet empties, but my heart is full.

Getting back on track, people are unique and will have their own set of quirks. It's ok to talk to someone who is a little bit different than you. You'll be ok, muffin. In fact, you'll probably be better off for it if you can make enough room in your life to accept others from where they're coming from. If you offer them grace, they will probably return the favour. Well, at least they should if they're even remotely socialized.

If you talked to someone last week, go up and talk to them again. A huge part of connection is consistency. Don't be one of those weirdos who pretends like they suddenly don't know someone they've spoken to 3 times prior.

Also, all of this advice applies to anyone in any year of study. If you're in your last year at this university and are saddened by not having made any friends, you can do everything I've mentioned above and still achieve success. The party ain't over till it's over.

I am living proof that this strategy works, and I'm no social butterfly by any means. I met one of my closest friends and one of the best people I've ever met by just bantering consistently over the course of many weeks. There was no cinematic event and major declaration that marked the transition point between us being acquaintances and friends. It was the slow, messy, nonlinearity of human connection.

Go out there, talk to people, make friends, and come back here to post some more novel rage bait to keep me entertained ❤️

Other not getting diploma at grad because i did not notice a financial hold

• Upvotes

I didnt even notice for a while but the Health and COunselling Centre must've given me a fee in like late august for a missed appointment? i dont even remember and i have not been there since like June, i 100% did not have an appointment there in august. I did notice more recently the financial hold on my acorn but my account balance was still $0. I thought it was a mistake or an admin error cuz the HCC didnt contact me to pay. I thought it would go away. I have Fall grad and I just got an email from the registrar saying that because I have a financial hold, I can't get my diploma on stage, but i can still walk but thats so embarrasing. My grad is ruined and i cant take pics at grad with my diploma and my family will be mad at me over this silly thing. Is there anything I can do? I emailed the HCC to ask them to confirm they put me on hold . is there anyyy way i can get my diploma at grad still? I feel like im gonna faint over this. the email from the registrar sounds very stern. and it is my fault, im just looking for help

edit: here is the email

Rant There is no reason for humanities courses to be mostly exam based

I just spent the past 2 days, around 12 hours writing a 3 page, less than 1k words paper. All for it to be worth 15% and for the rest of the course to be exams.

I know it does not take that long to write less than 1k words, but holy crap, I got so excited writing this, like I love going through class readings, coming up with an argument, finding evidence for my paper, I love even finding more evidence for my main arguments. I just finished it and I'm so excited to get feedback so next time I know how to do better. I have been neglecting studying for my midterms because this stupid short essay brings me so much joy. I woke up today and went straight back to finishing it.

I love writing papers so much. This made me realize why I picked political science as my major, I freaking love writing, I miss it so much. My GPA would be so much higher if classes were mostly essays.

Exams just force you to memorize everything, and by the time you leave the exam room, everything is gone. This is so stupid. I get that AI is now a thing, but everyone knows even if you use AI to write your papers you will not get a 80 or a 90.

Dont even get me started on the stupid exam "essays." Just make it multiple choice then. Whats the point? You want me to sit in a group stressed, and write a thesis, 3 arguments and remember evidence for my arguments? then you want me to have proper grammar and have citations ?! then you give me back my "essay" mark and say some stupid crap like "run off sentence" "more evidence needed" "thesis is flawed" LIKE WHATT I had 2 hours to write 5 paragraphs!? what do you want me to do like what the hell.

When you get feedback on actual essays, that are ASSIGNMENTS you can use them to improve your writing, you can push yourself to come up with a way better thesis next time.

Even Rstudio (for those who get it) would be so much more fun and engaging if we could get marked on how we used it.

Man I wanted to get my masters after graduation but if it's gonna be just like this, I dont see any point.

It's not AI that's killing the academic world, it's the paranoia that's killing it. Schools and professors can try to fight it all they want, knowing they cant win. Or they can push students to think beyond artificial intelligence.

Discussion Lost a pouch at Robarts that contained all of my university cards

I tried to post this 2 times but for some reason the moderators kept blocking it.

It is a light brown keychain pouch about 7-8 cm tall and inside it had my TCard + Residence Cards.
I checked the only two floors I've been in (Floor 2 Starbucks where I USED my TCard to pay via Dining Dollars) and the third floor Quiet Floor + Robarts Common women's washroom. It's not in the lost and found box. It's not in any of the other places I've been (I checked 4 times each).

I'm just confused on how it could POSSIBLY be gone unless someone either took it or it grew legs and ran away or smt.

I did submit a lost and found item report but I highly doubt I'll get in time since it is so urgent.

Would still gladly appreciate anyone who has found it to contact me.

Courses IMM429 Midterm Exam need help knowing what to focus on

Hi, I got really sick over the weekend. I go to every class for IMM429, and I am making my way through the content, but it is so heavy. I don't want to know what is on the exam; I just want to know how you felt taking the exam and whether it's research-heavy or based mainly on the papers and experimental data.

Thank you!

Question Got an academic integrity investigation for an online proctored exam

Their concerns and my side

  1. My eyes and head moved around at 3 timepoints.
  2. I took something out of my back pocket 30 seconds in the exam, and they saw a reflection in my glasses.
  3. The phone I used at check-in was different from the one I used at end for scanning the my answer sheet to submit.

But, I will agree that I had a second phone in my room, but I did not use it and my calculator was in my pocket and that is what I pulled out. I think it is highly bs too, but here is my story that day and going to tell when i meet them:

FYI: My personal laptop had water damage and it was with the repair shop, and I was using my coporate laptop. I have the reschedule receipts, the repair shop call, and the money transfer as proof, and call timeline with my mom.

My exam was at 9:00am, but I rescheduled to 4:50pm cuz when i tried logging into the exam with my coporate laptop (encrypted) it would give me an error so i quickly changed the exam time to 2:40pm. I called my repair shop if I could pick up the mac asap (they open at 11am so i had to wait), and I had to prepare $300. Already stressed about money too because its a lot of money to me. I called my parents who were in korea, and due to the time difference there was some delay in contact. After finding this out they were also highly freaked and my stress and panicking was through the roof. I used my korean phone for all the calling and texting with my parents and have evidence of the record and timelines too. I also had to use my korean phone for online banking and I was out of my room for an hour and a half like going to the bank and going to the repair shop and coming back. I also have proof that I was in contact with the repair shop.

My room was very messy because I was flying to korea the day after my exam, and it shows my luggages were outside when I was doing my exam. And I have 2 big monitors on my desk and all the set up, and u can also see my 2 pcs under my desk. I had my gpu, ssd, airpods, my candian phone, small electronics on the luggage, and covered with my pajamas. And, Im pretty dirty too. So I had to make sure my desk was fully cleaned and there was nothing on it, and I had my calculator in my pocket to make sure I wouldnt lose it while cleaning my room. I have my passport all the time in my bag and papers, so I just pulled those out and forgot my calculator existed, while doing the room tour and checkin. Also for the checkin in the resources section it just wrote Note taking sheet allowed, and didnt mention my calculator, so it was really out of my brain. Also didnt really read through that cuz I just wanted to get over with the exam too. Also 10 minutes before the exam I was on call with my mother on my korean phone because I was really highly panicked because if proctoru gives me an another error then Im really screwed, and I was just really tired that I went through all this. I hope that shows why I had my korean phone with me not my candian phone to the investigator.

It makes sense to them i cheated cuz they would think I had a second phone in my pocket and sneaked it out, [Approximately 30 seconds into the exam, you were observed reaching toward your back right pocket and slowly placing what appeared to be a second device onto your desk between 00:06:23 and 00:06:30.]
And there is also a vague reflection on my glasses.

I didnt show my second phone because I was like Im not even gonna like use it at all for checkins and email verfication for the exam. So I just covered it so they wouldnt see it. I placed my korean phone on top of the pajama to the proctor went back to my seat.

Also, the reflection shape does look like a phone, but it should shine or smthg not be just black.

If I used my phone I would be also like typing or taking pics, but the only suspicious movement were when I was moving my head a lot when I was solving the written questions, and that was the only time.

If they really trust me it was my calculator I would be happy with that. I took it out when the exam started and when I started looking at the questions, and I was "Im screwed my calculator", and that is why I pulled it out.

Punishment of not showing my second phone, I have not much things to say other than I was careless, but just thought I didnt need to show, and only pulled it out when I finished the exam and to take pictures to submit them.

It is very hard to articulate how stressed, panicked, and numb my body was in that situtation, but I really did not have a stable mentality to think things through. I know I should have been more prepared as a student taking an highly important exam, but all the bad omen happened to me in a single day, and I really tried my best to fight it through. Also, as an international student being alone in this country with no ties or support is very stressfully when in need of money and really just asking help.

Hi! Does anyone had one extra ticket for the 1:30PM Fall convocation on Oct 26th at UofT St George. Please reach out if you do, have people flying in for this graduation and alternate viewing area singling one person out would not be ideal. Thank you :)

Question Question about subletting a 2 bedroom place during summer

Hello.

I just graduated from uOttawa and working in downtown. At the moment, I’m renting just a room. But my family will be visiting me over the summer, so I was thinking of subletting a furnished place with 2 rooms (I don’t mind if it’s a 3 bedroom apartment/house and we have a roommate.) So, if you have a place like that and will be subletting it over the summer, I’ll be interested.

But for now, I just wanted to know how long will you be willing to sublet for? 2, 3 or 4 months.

Question U of T Engineering applicant — Should I rely on my predicted grades despite my current AS results?

Hi everyone,

I'm an international student applying to the University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering for Fall 2027 entry, and I wanted to ask for advice from people familiar with the admissions process for Cambridge International A Levels.

Here is my academic profile:

IGCSE results:

  • 5 A's and 2 B's
  • A's in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Business Studies, and Computer Science
  • B's in English and Arabic

Current AS Level results:

  • Mathematics: A
  • Physics: B
  • Economics: C

I'm planning to resit AS Physics and AS Economics in the October/November 2026 examination series. My current predicted grades for those AS resits are A in Physics and A in Economics.

My overall predicted A-level grades are A*A*A.

My current AS results aren't as strong as I'd like, but my school reports and predicted grades have improved considerably, and I'm working to demonstrate that improvement through my resits and final A-level examinations.

My questions are:

  1. When reviewing an application, how much weight does U of T Engineering place on current AS results compared with predicted full A-level grades?
  2. Is it reasonable to apply using my predicted grades and explain that I'm resitting Physics and Economics, or will my existing AS grades significantly weaken my application?
  3. Can my updated AS resit results, expected in January 2027, be considered later in the admissions process?
  4. Would it be better to submit my application now with my current results and predicted grades, then update my academic record when my resit results become available?

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has applied to U of T Engineering with Cambridge International qualifications, especially anyone who had lower AS grades but stronger predicted A-level grades.

Thanks!

Question Visiting UofT Scarborough, are there any elite piano spots open on Sunday?

Hey all, looking for good public piano spots at UoT SC. I love exploring new areas, discovering new pianos, performing for others briefly then dipping.

I usually do this closer to where I live but I thought I might as well explore and play at UoT SC while I'm there on Sunday.

If you know of any public pianos on campus or within the area, let me know or drop a reply!

Social Clubs where people are ACTUALLY nice and welcoming

I love the idea of clubs and I love meeting new people, but I have yet to find a club that is welcoming to people. I’ve been to a couple different events (like get togethers, potlucks, just chill meetups) and maybe it’s my fault for going alone, but EVERY event it’s just cliques and then the higher ups that don’t even talk to anyone beside themselves. Are they all like this? I feel like such a burden and end up leaving sad. I don’t mind going up to someone that is alone or perhaps a duo, but I feel like I shouldn’t have to welcome myself into a club where I’m just a general member and be the stranger in a group of friends, if that makes sense. Does anyone relate to this :/

Health To the girl wiping her eyes at St George and Bloor

You do not know me. I do not know you. I saw you on the diagonal opposite of the crosswalk, you were clutching notebooks, and wiping tears from your eyes. I stood on the other side, having just finished a midterm, also wiping away the tears.

We’ve got this. You are not alone. This is a brutal part of the semester. We will not fall apart irrevocably.

Discussion What is the most interesting Academic Discipline case you have read?

Mine is the one about a guy who had TWO girlfriends (unbelievable am I right?) write assignments for him.

Link: https://governingcouncil.utoronto.ca/system/files/adfg-documents/Case%20410.pdf

Sometimes when I’m procrastinating I like to read cases on the site like it’s a reality TV script or something. Anyways, have some integrity and pride in your work, stellar or failing. It might not be much but it’s honest work.

I’ve read some other ones about physical assault on a TA during an exam or straight up handing in a filled in exam from a previous year, I can’t find them at the moment though.

Question i got a bad mark on my bio120 test 1 and feel horrible

i’m very aware that university is much harder than high school, but i honestly didn’t think this test would throw me for a loop like it did. i studied and did the practice tests from ASSU and was feeling confident before and after the test. i got my mark back and i feel like a complete failure. i just wanna know if it’s all over for me. i want to maintain a high(ish) gpa and need a good mark to get into my POST. does anyone have any advice because i am freaking out a little.
