Test drive with FSD?
I test drove a model Y last month and used the FSD. I kept my hands off the steering wheel the whole time and on a stretch of road with no traffic, I closed my eyes for at least 39 seconds and never received any notifications. Is this normal? I hear people saying they have to keep hands on the wheel and watch the road.

Who is saying that? Never have to put your hands on the wheel unless you want to take over. You do have to watch the road, but you have a grace period of 20-40 seconds depending on the software version.

The new FSD literally checks for traffic and when there is not many cars, then not much attention is required.
More traffic = more attention
So now you can text and look around much more when not much traffic

FSD has two levels. Usually it’s hands off the wheel, but if they catch you with the camera, they want you to put slight pressure on the wheel. Using a turn signal or the right scroll wheel counts.
Driving with your eyes closed is …. Concerning… but I get why it’s tempting. The monitoring system isn’t perfect… sometimes it’s too much

I had my wife with me to let me know if anything went wrong while my eyes were closed.

I felt like my demo car was also extremely loose with the rules. Didn’t notify me once and for a few stretches I was absolutely not doing what I was supposed to be.
I had concluded that feature is either off or neutered in the demo car as not to strike it out

I have to agree with the loose rules on the demo cars. I had to cover the camera with my thumb to get a reaction out of the car

I also agree. During my demo, I intentionally tried to get a reaction from the car during FSD and it just kept driving, never alerted me

So, it is false advertising.

No, it worked exactly like my actual newest Tesla I received on March on 14.2.2.5. You get some time before the blue flashes and even more before you get a strike.

fsd def pays more attention to where your head is pointing rather than eyes are looking at i have never been yelled at if my head is upright but if i look down in front of me at a phone in my hand or at the touchscreen too long it will yell at me.
as for eyes closed, idk i haven't done it for that long there is no reason for me to do so i just do my thing and observe what is going on around me while the car drives me. i'm nearing 2000 miles on FSD and trust it pretty damn well but i have seen it screw up at night at least once where i intervened and marked it as critical and def think the system is nearly there but not 100% there yet. it does spot and slow down for shit i never would too so i do buy into the its safer than you are factor. a week ago it slowed for a squirrel that shot out and was thinking about crossing in front of me

I was more holy shit this really drives the car. I wasn’t going to close my eyes and I usually don’t either when I drive my car.

My Kona has a coffee cup symbol on the dash. It alerts me if I appear not alert. It hasn't gone off yet.

Are you Asian? Maybe it couldn’t tell if your eyes were open. I was joking at first but maybe this is a real thing.

😂. No, not Asian.

Well it’s hard to believe it didn’t beep at you with your eyes closed. Was it at night? One of the recent updates got real loose with paying attention. But 40 seconds and it’s gonna be getting angry for sure.

I see that you’re being downvoted but I think there was a lawsuit recently filed by an Asian driver who was experiencing the same thing.

No hands on wheel required. They arte mistaking it with the crusie control on alot of cars that keeps it in lane.
If you are not looking ahead or eyes closed it will give a warning. Not sure of time period.
