Question Am I doing something wrong?
I am on my quest of getting the platinum of Monster Hunter World, and the only trophy I still hadn't gotten is the one of the big and small crown monsters. Nergigante is literally the ONLY monster (from base game) that resists giving me it's crowns. All the other monster required less than 100 attempts minus Kirin who required 109. Am I doing something wrong?

to minmax hunting nergigante, you need to do investigations with him as the target.
your investigations must have rewards that match the following patterns:
- 4+ gold
- 3 Gold and 1+ Bronze
- 1+ Gold 3+ Silver
- 4+ Purple
- 3 Purple
these all offer 3-6% drop rates for crowns. which are the highest rates you can get in investigations.
since this is nergi, it has to be a high rank investigation.
refer to this resource document. its what guided me to my platinum. good luck.

Where did you get the investigation pattern info from? Is it in the doc, i cant seem to find it.
I am interested in getting the platinum myself.

yes its in the doc. the doc is a spreadsheet, and the droprate percentages are explained in detail on sheet 3 "Breakdowns" in columns J-Q (as of 2026 -- the last edit moved them and changed the formatting a bit, i swear they used to be on sheet 2 lol)

I see, is this info available for every (or atleast most) monsters? Like, to make it easier to hunt them for crowns, or is it more like only some of the monster have it?

every monster has the same droprate??? (its in the document)
the only exceptions are event quests that have 100% drops for select monsters. and those are detailed yes.

It took me 248 hunts to get both Nergi crowns.
I got the first crown at hunt 247 and prepared to settle in for another long, nightmarish grind. Aaaaaand then immediately got the other crown on hunt 248.
RNG is just a wild bitch.

I'm guessing you are farming them with investigation quest, then no that's just Monster Hunter rng at his finest, if the game says "no" then you are literally fucked. Happened with me on my original playthrough in world with Kirin, with a whooping 360 hunts on him

Nope. It just be like that. I got the platinum for World but didnt get it for Iceborne because I didnt want to crown hunt again. Rng can be a nightmare.

Actually there's a way to get faster gold crown. You have to fight them in tempered mode.
There a 9 ⭐ quest call "Delivery" I think in the events, I forget the name but all you do is delivery and you also COLLECT tracks.
There's plenty of Tempered Tracks for elder dragons. I recently found out about it and managed to get Nergigante small and large crown. Now I have teosra as well now.
It works, the chances are higher.

Are you doing the investigation method of taking in investigation quest where there are multiple conditions and gold rewards or max temper rewards .

Look up videos on how to measure the Nergigante relative to your hunter. Just go to YouTube and search "nergigante small crown" and "nergigante large crown". Only do the hunt if it seems like the Nerg might be one of them.
I don't know what platform you're on, but on PC I save-scummed so that I wouldn't have to obtain more investigation quests.

Lucky! It took me 420 kirin to get the largest crown! Nergi can be a pain but it's a fun fight so, there is that.

It’s pure insanity if you have to do 300+ a specific monster only for a specific crown. I didn’t start it yet as I need to finish Wilds 100% but I will crashout really early on with my luck

I already “finished” World a while back but didn’t start the trophy hunt mainly because I heard about the crown rng but didn’t know it was that bad lol. I can do the vast majority of hunt under 5-3min, and even if I could magically lower it to 15sec it’s still 300x 15sec each times I don’t have luck with a monster

Do high reward investigations and measure him before killing him so you dont waste your time. High rewardsTempered investigations also work and some event quests have crowned monsters like the greatest Jagras and also the quest for hunting Teostra before finding Lunastra.

You should measure, and focus on doing high number of purple box investigations. That’s the best way to crown hunt elders in world

Nothing wrong, RNG just sucks but you can go online to see how to measure them using your character or barrel bombs

Most people say to do investigations but having just got the last crowns this past week I have much better odds loading into events/optionals. Ode to destruction specifically gave me both for ruiner. There’s a website I can share with the percent chance of a crown on every mission. Most are 1-2% so I pop on a show and just reload until I get it

For crown hunting of those monsters that don't have guaranteed crown events, it's suggested that you do it with Investigations.
Investigations have crown chances depending on the amount and quality of rewards, as such:
Reward Slots --- Chance %
At least 1 Silver and at least 1 Gold --- 6% (miniature), 3% (giant)
3 Gold and 1 Bronze --- 6% (miniature), 3% (giant)
4 or more Gold --- 6% (miniature), 6% (giant)
3 Purple (Tempered Investigations) --- 6% (miniature), 3% (giant)
4 or more Purple (Tempered Investigations) --- 6% (miniature), 6% (giant)
I just copied that from the wiki BTW
My personal recommendation is watching yt videos on how to measure monsters, and the best approach in my opinion are the ones where you make the monster sleep with any sleep bowgun and place a bomb where the video says
And also, if you run out of Investigations, send the safari to elders recess, that's the best way of farming investigations.
And what i also did to not have to constantly farm investigations, was to get a bunch, backup my save to a USB drive and search for the crowns. Didn't get any and depleted all investigations? Just rollback from the USB and try again

2 methods to find out rarity before hunting: 1. (In game no mods) use binoculars boughten from provisions stockpile, hotbar to use equipment and aim/highlight before fighting, and then leave and restart if not a crown symbol and 2. Get a mhworld overlay mod, only difference is the symbol can be seen on mission start, binoculars you need to point them at monster. Otherwise, COMPLETE RNG to find right ones. Honourable mention; multi-monster events quest have 12% increased chance for all gold crowns for monsters (large and small)/(multi as in special all monsters in area ones), and 6% for tempered minimum 4/5 purple rewards slots.

Binoculars dont show sizes in world Also you can measure yourself against the monster which is how i got all the world crowns back in the day

Make sure you are doing investogation quests and preferably one with multiple monsters
4+ purple boxes will help you get higher chance but not by much. Good luck chef

There’s a YouTuber that also measures his monsters to not waste a whole hunt for no crown, I got the plat following his measurements. Essentially he walks up to the monster with a ghillie mantle and uses the player’s head for reference. It’s not perfect but definitely helped me with some of the more frustrating ones. Took me 200+ hunts to get Velkhana’s crowns.

Nothing, crown hunting is just a complete RNG flip, there's not a lot you can do about it.
But there's event quests out there that gives a guaranteed crown or even have a higher chance for spawning crowns I think
Not sure if nergigante is included in those quests
