Question Montreal transplants who ended up leaving, how did you know it was time to leave?
I'll start by saying that I left my hometown of Halifax at 18 to go to university here. It's been 15 years now, and this city is so clearly home but I have had a hard time figuring out where to do my future.
On one hand, I love my life here so much. I have a super fulfilling social life (many amazing close friends and I feel like I have a place in a few larger social networks). I am quite content professionally - I'm a teacher, and I love many things about my job but I am also aware that there is room for improvement there*. I love what the city has to offer; the food, the people, the culture, the history, decent proximity to nature and it's close to other interesting places (the rest of QC, NYC, Toronto, etc...).
On the other hand, my parents, my brother and his children, and my oldest friend are back east. I have a good relationship with my parents and admittedly it's been harder to be away from them these past few years. It started during the pandemic when I couldn't go back to NS because of the travel restrictions, breaking my usual twice-per-year pattern. This coincided with a few friends losing their parents of similar ages quite suddenly which forced me to reconcile that even if my parents are in good health, they are in their 60s and surprises can happen. I am grateful that I get to see them at Christmas, in the summertime, and sometimes one or both of my parents will visit at another point during the year, but the difference of visits vs actually living near them is obvious to me.
Similarly, I think that I want kids and I find it hard to picture raising my child/children with my parents as grandparents who are a plane ride away, knowing that my parents would love to help take care of them and wanting my potential kid(s) to have a good relationship with my wonderful parents. Then there's a part of me that loves the idea of raising a child in/near this amazing city. Having them be a little bilingual badass who gets to be raised in all of the beauty this city has to offer is also such an incredible future to imagine.
To this end, I am also jealous of my friends who aren't from here but are a little closer to home. The ones from Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, etc... who can leave work on a Friday, drive a few hours and be back where they grew up. Meanwhile, Halifax is a daunting 12-14 hour drive away or ~$500 on a plane ticket. There's no way to casually pop back for a weekend for a celebration or to be there when someone is in a moment of need, and that's been tough on me.
I guess I just feel deeply confused. Halifax is cool but it's a city of 500k people and it feels like a downgrade from Montreal in a big way to me. Maybe more importantly is that I don't really have friends there and in Montreal I can't emphasis enough that I love my robust social network. Some of my friends have been with me for 10+ years and I like that I am a known-face in a few different, larger circles (maybe what I mean here is feeling integrated into larger communities). I fear that if I leave I will be mourning those friendships.
Even more broadly speaking I have really fallen in love with Quebec and worry about Nova Scotia not filling its void. Call me crazy but it would be hard to move away from the winters here. Winters in most of NS are super mild now, I would miss the snow, the crosscountry skiing, skating outdoors and those are also things I would ideally like to have in my children's lives if I were to become a parent one day.
I could ramble on for all of these topics for hours, but I guess I just don't know what to do when each option feels a bit like losing.

Événement MONTREAL! TAKE MY TICKETS FOR A SKA CONCERT! GO SEE STREETLIGHT MANIFESTO!!!
My tickets on StubHub are virtually as cheap as they can get. I don't know how to give them away for free. I can't go. They're fucking incredible. I should have posted earlier. I'll refund your money if you really need it, just don't waste this experience.

Question Best (somewhat inexpensive) vet for cats in Montreal or around??
Hello,
I’m looking for a new vet that isn’t too expensive and actually do their jobs. I currently go to one in mirabelle but everytime we have gone the vet never actually checks the cat outside of taking their weight.
I used to go Royal vet, in Mount Royal but they are very pricey BUT they actually go above and beyond for your cat. So please give any suggestions!

Discussion L'état des services publiques à Montréal

Genuinely just curious!

Question Would anyone be willing to help me with a project?
Hi everyone! I’m hoping to find someone who might be willing to help me make a cosplay of a character from a video game I’ve been obsessed with.
I’ve never done cosplay before, and I’ve honestly never made anything with my hands like this. I have a sewing machine that I’ve been too intimidated to even try using, but I’ve really wanted to learn. I know this is probably a pretty ambitious project for a complete beginner, but it’s something I’d really love to try.
I’m hoping to find someone with experience in sewing, fabric, pattern-making, or cosplay who wouldn’t mind helping me figure things out, from choosing the right materials to learning how to put everything together. I’d love to work on it piece by piece, learn some new skills, and have someone more experienced to guide me when I inevitably have no idea what I’m doing.
I’m not expecting anyone to make it for me. I genuinely want to learn and be involved in the process, I just think having someone to learn alongside would make something that feels really intimidating right now seem a little more possible.
I’d be incredibly grateful for anyone willing to help, whether that’s working on it together, or just helping me figure out where to start. i’m confident I could do all the details on my own, kind of sort of, but making the actual pieces like a blazer and a tailcoat and a vest and shorts I’ve never done before, and I feel like it would take me at least a year to figure all those pieces out individually on my own.

Question Chauffage et ses limites?
Hey guys.

Question LGBT mental health ressources
HI! Sorry if this is not the right sub for this kind of questions. Just wondering if anyone knows of some ressources for queer/trans youth in the montreal region? Mental health wise, or just general support/community building or socializing. Thanks you a lot for the help.

Question places to bar hop on halloween
me and my friends are thinking of bar hopping on halloween, so i was just wondering which neighborhoods and areas are good for it without being too chaotic and having to wait too long just to get in (so like i guess beyond ville marie and the st laurent areas im assuming those will be the worst)

Gastronomie New onigiri shop @metro snowdon!!
This used to be a dep, been abandoned for years and they're finally turning it into an onigiri shop!! I'm literally so excited I can't wait till they open.

Image Didn't know the older metros got updated to include the rem lines
Sorry if I used the wrong flair
I figured that the stm would forget abt this considering that stations like Snowdon still have maps that include the old Deux Montagnes line for Exo. Since when did they change this anyhow?

Question Lost backpack in Uber — passport inside, reward — Atwater/Notre-Dame, Oct. 16 (Friday) night
Sac à dos perdu dans un Uber – passeport et disques durs à l’intérieur, récompense
I forgot a black July Carry-All backpack in an Uber. I think two women (passengers after me) may have taken it by mistake, thinking it was theirs.
The Uber driver dropped them off near Atwater and Notre-Dame (not their destination), between 11:30 pm and midnight on Friday, Oct. 16.
The backpack has my passport and US green card (I just came from the airport), and a few hard drives with years of art documentation that cannot be replaced (really wish I’d backed them up...). They have no value to anyone but me. It also has my (very old) laptop.
If either of the two women sees this, or if anyone in that area has seen the backpack left somewhere, please contact me by DM. $400 reward, no questions asked. Just want the backpack back.
Thank you. Merci.
