I still pull this one up every couple of years, best Macklemore song by a long mile.

u/Noteagro Sep 14 '26
Personally I think it is a slugfest between Otherside and My Oh My. Granted I grew up in Washington and listening to Dave Niehaus’ play-by-play of the Marniners all the time as a kid.
11
u/BlackLeader70 Sep 14 '26
I’m not a Mariners fan or even keep up with baseball too much these days. But My Oh My definitely slaps and reminds me of childhood baseball games.
17
u/I_dont_bone_goats Sep 14 '26
Man when I read about the Macklemore stuff this morning, my oh my INSTANTLY started playing in my head
23
u/dspitts Sep 14 '26
This version is great too, but I have a soft spot for the OG version from the original EP that actually sampled "Otherside."

So why hasn’t Kanye been banned from stadiums for his anti semitic comments?
I’m starting to think that it’s not about the religion and more about the far right ideology that matters more
50
u/Djb0623 Sep 14 '26
Kanye has been banned from stadiums
45
11
u/Wise-Comb8596 Sep 15 '26
Kanye was permitted to perform at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. They were pressed on the issue and made a statement that they care about “freedom of speech”
One call from Robert Kraft and Macklemore was immediately banned.
They don’t care about antisemitism. they don’t care what you say or think about Jews. They just don’t want you questioning Israel - thats the line.

I had never heard this version before. Just the normal one over the RHCP Otherside instrumentals.
Fun to hear a different version, probably still prefer the other one though
26
u/PlasticBag-ForA-Head Sep 14 '26
the og rhcp version is so fucking good, he couldnt have choosen a more fitting instrumental to sample.

Amazing song. Music therapist showed up this and starting over when i was in rehab.
3
u/kruzix Sep 14 '26
thats the song where in the chorus you can hear the singer's jaw cracking , right? i kind of could never stop hearing it after realizing it first way back then

After reading about him being dropped from that tour, I literally just thought “everybody’s gonna pretend they love his music now,” lmao.
3
u/CaptainOvbious Sep 14 '26
i pretended i didn't like it to sound more cool lol, im sure im not the only one on this sub either
1
u/ds11_ Sep 15 '26
That's the only reason he was posted here in the first place lol who actually listens to Macklemore?
16
u/IDespiseBananas Sep 14 '26
Meanwhile Ive been bopping some of his stuff since Heist dropped, he has some bangers
1
-25
u/Gleb_Twankenfrister Sep 14 '26
lmao no amount of him being based will get me to say his music isn’t corny
48
u/Diesel_D Sep 14 '26
You’ve been psyopped into thinking being authentic and caring about the world around you is cringe and corny. This is a lie. You are the corny one for thinking this.
15
u/BlackieTee Sep 14 '26
I think he’s allowed to have an opinion on Macklemore’s music that has nothing to do with being psyopped or not. There are plenty of musicians who I believe to be genuinely good human beings but I would never willingly listen to their music
7
u/Diesel_D Sep 14 '26 edited 16d ago
I completely agree. I think there is a big difference between saying "Mackelmore's music isn't for me" vs. stating "Macklemore makes corny music" like it's an objective fact. The word "corny" is very specifically used to knock down people who speak about the injustices of the world. It's dismissive and demeaning on purpose. An artist expressing themselves in an authentic way is never corny. And by continuing to use that language, we are perpetuating the idea that caring about our fellow humans is lame.
People can hate Macklemore, hate his music, think he's bad, whatever. I don't care about that. But when a guy makes art about equal rights and everyone lines up to call him corny, I think they are saying more about themselves and their shitty world view than they are making a valid artistic criticism.
5
5
u/BlackieTee Sep 14 '26
Ahh ok I understand more of where you’re coming from. To me when I initially saw the word “corny” I just assumed it meant that the music is lame or for people trying to be cool but just aren’t. I wasn’t thinking about the connotation that calling Macklemore “corny” had more to do with his speaking out on human rights than it has to do with the type of music he makes. That’s fair
Though I’m still not completely convinced that when the person made the comment you replied to that that was exactly his intention, to make fun of Macklemore b/c of his speaking out on issues. That’s why he said “no amount of him being based…”
But I’m not here to defend anyone so I’ll just leave it there
1
3
u/Gleb_Twankenfrister Sep 14 '26
no dude his music is just not sonically good. it has nothing to do w the fact he is a good person and outspoken about politics, that’s what im saying. you know the whole “separate the art from the artist” saying, generally it’s used to excuse people’s shitty behavior but in this case i am using it to excuse his shitty music lmao
4
u/MinorThreatCJB Sep 14 '26
Or the music just sucks. He could be the greatest guy in the whole world but his music isn't good

What? Macklemores music is corny as fuck
4
-2
u/StatuatoryApe Sep 14 '26
Youll enjoy life more if you try and enjoy the corny stuff from time to time.
Hell, I rip "no handlbars" every once in awhile and thats corny-incarnate. Love it though.
4
u/Crayola63 Sep 14 '26
I do enjoy corny. I still listen to ska and stuff like electric callboy.
Macklemore is corny
-10
u/tanktronic Sep 14 '26
For people who get uncomfortable with sincerity, yes. Perhaps you'd be more comfortable with "gangster" rappers
7
1
u/ripyourlungsdave Sep 14 '26
This is just the saddest thing regularly hear.
Movie characters are corny. Human emotion and artistic expression is human. Just because you've been inundated with a million different version of these human emotions doesn't mean the human emotions are any less real or deserve to be expressed any less.
2
u/Gleb_Twankenfrister Sep 14 '26
but a movie character is also someone’s human artistic expression

Call me unconvinced of his current stated motives based on his past actions.
I don't really care that he "apologized."
8
u/Dry_Bet_3813 Sep 14 '26
He has a documented history of caring about human rights… if one action 12 years ago makes you doubt someone’s beliefs, they you must not trust very many people

How many times have you dressed up as racist caricature for your public event?
I'm guessing zero?
Zero for me too.
In fact, it's zero for all people who aren't racist pricks.
Apologies mean nothing without reform, and I see no evidence of reform. Do you?
6
u/Diesel_D Sep 14 '26
I dressed up as a gangsta obama back in 2008 for Halloween and it was super racist in hindsight. Does that mean I can never say genocide is bad? Is there anything I will ever be able to do to redeem myself enough in order to have the perfect track record that is apparently required to say genocide is bad?
1
u/iamnotazombie44 Sep 14 '26
You honestly want to compare yourself dressing up "gangster Obama for Halloween" to defend a band frontman performing in flagrant Jewface at packed concert?
Both aren't great but uhhh.... really something buddy.
Did you enjoy your time in blackface circa 2008?
Macklemore sure looked like he enjoyed his Jewface experience.
5
u/Eother24 Sep 14 '26
You’re really gonna act like one is worse? And pretend “jewface” is a thing?
C’mon bud. Bit of a reach.
1
u/iamnotazombie44 Sep 14 '26
Yes, Jewface is real and one is definitely worse.
Y'all really are a bunch of racist fucks, aren't you?
My god this is a depressing fucking thread.

Whats the big deal?

Same 9/11 that the Palestinians (same Palestinians Macklemore is rooting for) celebrated in the streets after, giving out candy?
0
u/OKC89ers Sep 15 '26
People lose their right to life and security when their relatives 25 years ago celebrated a tragedy.
2
u/nukkawut Sep 15 '26
Or vote in a terrorist government, or rip up all of the water pipes to make into rockets, or attack the kibbutzes that were the only place Palestinians could earn a living wage before Oct 7...

Completely indefensible and I can't believe he was stupid enough to undermine his own points with this racist ass costume. What a fucking idiot.
That said, there IS a genocide happening in Palestine right now, Israel IS waging an illegal land grab in Palestine and Lebanon right now, etc.
3
u/Driller_Happy Sep 14 '26
Man, even the anti defamation league said this was nothing more than poor decision making when choosing a disguise
1
u/BlaxicanXIX Sep 14 '26
Yes, it was extremely poor decision making. Do you disagree?
-1
u/whichwitch9 Sep 14 '26
They are pointing out he came out in what was meant to be a random disguise and did immediately apologize after it happened in 2014.
https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-27483970
Whether you believe it or not, he did address and acknowledge it as ignorant at the time, as well as pivoted it to promote the ADL after.
0
u/pr0tag Sep 14 '26
The irony is how the ADL suddenly becomes an authoritative source when it helps absolve Macklemore, but gets dismissed as biased or unreliable the moment its conclusions on antisemitism become inconvenient.
You can’t selectively treat it as credible only when it supports your argument.
3
u/whichwitch9 Sep 14 '26
Just pointing out their own hypocrisy in posting the photo- especially because the people posting seem to love pointing towards the ADL when it fits their narrative
If context upsets people, they should reevaluate why it does

I really don’t understand why people defend artists or celebrities for having the most bare minimum “humans should have rights” message. Most “normal everyday” people also believe that and it doesn’t make us special. Also him doing this racist caricature actually helps the idea of Israel more than hurt it. Also his music is fucking trash and is on par with Taylor Swift’s “bland chicken do me missionary” basic-ness.

Because it's true r/music and reddit in general were not fans of him until last week.
0
u/JBNothingWrong Sep 14 '26
And you’ve got your finger on the pulse of all of reddits opinions? Lmao shut up
0
u/Dragon_yum Sep 14 '26
Because a musician makes more than one song and as a whole his music sucks?
-2
u/JBNothingWrong Sep 14 '26
You can call him safe or cheesy or buoyed by his whiteness but he’s far too commercially successful to just flat out say he sucks.
-11
u/Affectionate-Salt356 Sep 14 '26
Because the rest of his music is mid at best and he's an antisemite
2
u/JBNothingWrong Sep 14 '26

And Same Love may have aged terribly (and possibly have a stolen hook i can't remember) but it was a pretty big deal at the time. I had it on repeat for a while.
He's always been a better activist and role model than a rapper, IMO.

It's Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Put some respect on Ryan Lewis' name. He's the one that brought the polish and gravity to Macklemore's songs.
