discussion can we talk about how ANNOYING is this to everyone that really likes music?
I really hate those crappy AI covers of good songs, but using modified voices of real singers, like Christina Aguilera (on the screenshot) I bet yall hate it too. she could sing "its oh so quiet" very easily without AI.
it really annoys me that they will probably gain real money on some things like that, while the artist will never know they cloned her voice with AI
the AI didnt ever bother to write the name correctly on the cover, like what is "oh its so quiet", and that is what really kills the music industry

Two podcasts I listen to had ripoffs made with their image copied with a slight variant on the name.
They posted ~50 episodes, and had obviously run real podcast scripts through LLM text to speech.
Both the podcasts are on BIG networks, and were up for weeks before Spotify did anything. Whoever was behind the copies had 10-15 other slop podcasts up that I'm pretty sure were never taken down

Creating a Youtube account is free and easy.
Creating an AI cover song, or 100 songs is free/cheap and easy.
Finding the real person behind the account, then having a lawyer draft and file a lawsuit is expensive and difficult.

u/EmmEnnEff 17d ago
Filing a DMCA takedown takes a few minutes.
29
u/evanieCK 17d ago
content ID systems don't recognize it because it's an AI amalgamation of the song and not the song itself, and cover songs generally fall under fair use. maybe AI covers shouldn't but it takes time to pass laws for stuff like that and this stuff has mostly emerged in the space of like 5 years.
10
u/EmmEnnEff 17d ago
ContentID won't automatically flag it, but if you send a DMCA takedown, Google will take it down.
The uploader has to then make a legal filing if they want to contest the takedown. I strongly doubt any of these channels will, because none of them are interested in going to court.

Yes because they aren't building a following with any given channel, they have no investment in any of it, it's all easily replaced.

compositions are generally covered pretty strictly and commercializing a cover is grounds to get you sued to my understanding

Cover songs are not covered under “fair use.” They are, however, entitled to compulsory license. But the piper still has to be paid.

Suno, an AI music creation tool, is getting sued twice currently. Hopefully the result from the lawsuits will set some precedent.
7
u/TheSkiGeek 17d ago
This is straight up infringement of publicity rights, you can’t use someone’s name and face to advertise your product whether or not it involves AI. On top of them (I’m sure) not having rights to the song either.
Now… if they did have rights to record and distribute a cover, I’m not sure they could be prohibited from making an AI knockoff voice that sounds stylistically like a well known singer. But you can’t plaster their name and face on it without their permission.
6
u/DanceMaxRoboMusic 17d ago
I make covers, but not those covers.
I make lyric covers. I don't clone voices, or use the same melodies as the songs I'm covering. Just the lyrics. That makes copyright detection very difficult.
I've been doing it for years, because I think it's fun to turn my favourite metal lyrics into EDM songs.
I'm not monetized, never even attempted to make money cause that's beyond stupid, not why I do this (and the first step into getting sued).

u/Bakkster 17d ago
It's YouTube so the labels can just use the platform process (if a video with under 200 views is even worth it) to either take the revenue or remove it.
1
u/zoinkability 17d ago
In this case it goes beyond simple licensing, however. The rightsholders to the composition could monetize as that's pretty cut and dry but I'm not sure how Christina Aquilera could, as she has no copyright on the song. I'd imagine she'd have to sue in court, which is expensive, time consuming, and hard to do at scale if you have many people pulling this shit.

It's just people who want background sound, the kind who turn on the radio and just listen to whatever is on.
They don't care where it comes from or what the intentions behind those songs are, they only care about it "sounding good" to them.
These people are music consumers, not music enjoyers.

3
u/zoinkability 17d ago
Spotify has been cozy with low effort music for years, even before AI songs. They do it because it makes them money.
The only solution is to go to a platform like Qobuz, which demonetizes AI songs and removes them from recommendations and other listings as soon as they are identified.
3
u/2ChicksAtTheSameTime 17d ago
For over a decade the internet has been filled with people seeing something they like, like Star Wars, or Stardew Valley, and then doing their own fan art, often putting their own style and spin on it, and often times re-imagining things, like 'here's my fan art of keanu as Han Solo" or "Here's stardew valley done in lego"
There are a lot of people who do not see any difference between those types of unauthorized creations, and these AI creations. They just see it as a creative mashup of ideas, and don't really give a shit if it was done with AI or done legit. b

15
u/Arillious 17d ago
I thought the same. But then I started hearing some songs I really liked and went to check the band, and found out they were in fact AI created or "human written" but ai performed. Spotify had it hidden down at the bottom. I've been hiding the artists as much as possible, but they keep popping up and it's getting harder and harder to tell and they don't let you block all ai content.
It really sucks because I don't have the time I used to and was relying on my discover weekly to find new music.
5
13
u/mtys123 17d ago
Always think the same, all these people complainning "my feed is full of ai music" "my feed is all fruit ai generated novelas" etc. I hace never seen ANY of that, not a single one. If anything remoted related to ai generated slop appears, just put "not interested" and that will tailor the feed to that.
Its exactly the same as if I don t like x or y artist, just repeately tell the algorithm that you hate it and it will stop reccomending it
7
u/galaxystarsmoon 17d ago edited 17d ago

If you listen to instrumental playlists sadly you probably have encountered more than a bit of AI music, especially in the lofi/chill type stuff.
7
u/StinkyStangler 17d ago
I don't listen to lofi/chill playlists, even before AI a lot of them were extremely lazy loops, much prefer to listen to actual electronic artists like KUNZITE and whatnot for that realm
8
u/silentcrs 17d ago
I’ve found a simple solution: don’t use Spotify.
I just buy the music I want to hear like the old days. It’s cheap, the artist gets paid more, I can play the music wherever I want (like offline), and no AI.
17
u/maskaddict 17d ago
I use Spotify every day and I've never been forced to listen to anything AI-generated, because I don't let Spotify pick my music for me. I search the artists I want to listen to.
3
u/DoctorOctagonapus 17d ago
I listen to artist radio quite a lot but have still never been served any slop. Maybe no one's bothered slopifying folk or prog metal yet!
2
u/frankyb89 17d ago
I mean I make my own playlists and adventure through related artists myself but I do still use Discovery and Release and I've only been fed an AI artist twice. And one of those two is more that they put Timbaland in my playlist and he was trying to hock some AI bullshit. Idk how people are getting so much AI put in their face.
7
u/aalitheaa 17d ago
Absolutely.
I'd actually say that the best thing about coping with the AI apocalypse has been how easy it is to avoid AI music by just making a few changes in my listening/purchasing habits.
And after I made those changes, the quality of music I listen to is actually far better than even before the AI music existed. Spotify's Discover Weekly and other algorithmic playlists were already reducing the quality of the music I listened to.
Basically, I should have switched to Bandcamp/CDs years ago anyway, for many, many reasons. The shitty AI music was actually fantastic as a final push away from streaming.

Every time I see someone say this their music taste is boilerplate and they listen to like 5 playlists. If you don't engage with the algorithm or keep to your own world of music, you won't see this stuff often.
If you used Discover Weekly between 2024-early 2026 there's a very strong chance you've listened to an AI artist without knowing it.
20
u/StinkyStangler 17d ago
I don’t use discover weekly because it has sucked since like 2022 lol
I just go out and find bands on my own, occasionally I check out the genre playlists but for the most part I’m doing my own prospecting. If I find a random band I like I also look them up to just learn more about them, have not once learned a band I like is an AI band

I don’t use Spotify anymore, switched to Apple Music maybe 3 years ago. Discover weekly used to be amazing back then, I was exposed to so many new artists that way. Sad to hear it’s full of AI slop now, though I wonder if it depends on the music you listen to otherwise.
On Apple Music now about 80% of what I listen to is albums I specifically choose, the other 20% is Apple generated playlists that is mostly music I already know, the rest is related artists I may or may not have heard. But I don’t get any AI content. If I don’t know a song on one of the generated playlists I look up the artist to see who they are, never run across anything remotely AI sounding

I listen to current release stuff, at least from the current year, almost exclusively and haven't noticed any AI stuff in my discover weekly & release radar. I don't use generated playlists in spotify otherwise.
That said, my usage is a huge outlier and the spotify wrapped yearly thing never knows how to categories me. I definitely know AI nonsense is a problem on the platform, too, regardless of my exposure rate.

Algorithm, I bet. Automated consumerism.
There was a golden age when we could use Spotify to effortlessly find new music we like and it has now seemingly ended. We might be going back to listening to full albums for a seamless music experience and making an active effort to find new stuff we like.
2
u/MonkeySherm 17d ago
i've always been a guy that enjoys a whole album experience. its like watching a movie for me. of course i have playlists for different things, especially running, but when I sit down to listen to music it's almost always an album at a time.
I tried spotify for a minute maybe 10 years ago, but since I've had an iPod I always liked Apple Music better, so I'm still on that.
You're right about finding new music - I still actively search it out. I listen to a lot of college radio and I have friends with good taste too.

I’ve listened to it-not my cup of tea. It sounded a little silly, to be honest, and it doesn’t have the magic of Björk’s recording. The AI copies the pattern, but not the dynamics, the breath, the vocal explosions, the tension-all those human elements that made the song so extraordinary back in the day.
Bro has to be an Aguilera fan. I think AI Aguilera was sitting on the toilet when she recorded those vocals.
Once these goofballs/Fans get bored with the novelty of the technology, I think AI music could do extraordinary things.

This is not saying that music is dead, or that this "counts" as a original composition (ffs, proffiting from it or taking any kind of credit is out of the question). I don't think everyone likes it, I think it's getting lots of engagement with bots.
I just ran into this phenomenon today. My daughter and I were trying to remember what song Lady Gaga sang with Tony Bennett and the first several hits in the search were AI generated songs that were meant to be her singing. My daughter saw it and said "I didn't know she covered My Way" and clicked not thinking. It sounded nothing like her, so we knew immediately it was garbage. It's definitely not the first. A few weeks ago autoplay sent me to this garbage after a Big Mama Thornton video that claimed to be "found audio". Took about fifteen seconds to recognize what they claimed was "remastered" was just AI crap. I can't help noticing all the engagement comments are bots too.

Dude, I'm one that likes music and I NEVER had a problem with these AI covers at all. If anything I've been continuously impressed with how much these YouTube Channels were able to adapt them into these various styles over the last couple years to where a lot of them were just better than the original works themselves.
I still have a download of this one AI cover that adapted Keane's Somewhere Only We Know into such an incredible ballad of a song that still ends up being my go to version of it to this day! Never heard the original song prior to it, but after I did, it just continues to show how much of an improvement it was compared to that original version as that was just too dang boring to try to listen to all the way.

and this is why the only new music i've consumed in 2026 is either from established artists or was released prior to 2020. i'm not consuming any new music bc of AI. cut all my streaming service. i pirate the big artists and pay for the small ones. there's so much unheeard music in the world and people are willingly listening to AI. sometimes i hope they were wrong about when the sun will turn into a red dwarf

A lot of the non-bot audience are victims who do not know how predatory the algorithm is.
I have a relative that only uses YouTube for music. They recommend me crazy music shows that sound like Limewire filenames made manifest. "Nirvana with London Philharmonic orchestra live at the Royal Albert Hall", "Rolling Stones live with Ravi Shankar and 11 other sitar players at once", "Led Zeppelin feat Eddie Van Halen cover The Beatles".
They look at me with a look of physical pain when they ask me if it is AI (it always is slop). Never let people you care about listen to algorithms.

As much as AI needs to sitdown in the musoc world, to make a statement like, "to everyone who really likes music", is quite arrogant. You can really like music, & still appreciate the "what if", of an AI cover. Now , if whoever made this is trying to make money off this, Christina, or any other artist who's voice is being used, needs to sue.

For anyone interested, there's a community maintained AI slop blacklist for youtube that can filter out these channels, and allows to report new ones! -> https://aisloplist.com/

There’s no discussion to be had among thinking people, it’s a plague.
