I don't get the hype about Watt. I remember hearing about how great he was in California Breed and that guitar work is the most boring simple basic non inspired lame guitar work of all time. And his production is just running drums and vocals through a saturation plugin. Makes the vocals sound like you are singing through a tiny Peavey practice amp.

I like him because he's very good at extracting good music from a lot of these older bands. Ozzy, Elton John, McCartney, and the Stones all had some of their best recent stuff with him. Though I do agree that his production style really isn't very good. But I'd ultimately rather have good songs with bad production than bad songs with good production.

Yeah, he does have a few OK things. He got Ozzy to sing higher for the last 2 albums vs. another producer I am not crazy about rick ruben who let Ozzy just talk/sing on Sabbaths 13.

Not to mention Pearl Jam

The songs aren't even THAT good though.

When I saw Iggy pop he played guitar and was so main character that it was very annoying. Not a huge fan of the albums he's worked on either.

I’m assuming you’ve seen him playing guitar with Ozzy while Zakk was also onstage playing guitar. It was quite the sight to behold

He’s absolutely abhorred in music production circles for his production style.

I don’t think this is the answer you’re looking for but he convinced Pearl Jam to go back to letting Mike McCready play solos on their last studio album and that was pretty fantastic.

That said, people didn’t seem to like the actual production of the album.

I think that complaint had more to do with the mix. I am patiently awaiting the 10 yr anniversary of Dark Matter so we can get a Brendan O’Brien mix haha

I liked Dark Matter, Earthling, and the new Stones albums.

And then he made it all sound like dog shit. At least there are the bootleg live recordings of the songs off the album.

Well the mixer on the album is Șerban Ghenea, who is generally a pop oriented mixer, which I think is a big reason why all the drums sound compressed AF. If I could really change anything about Dark Matter, it would literally only be the final mix as I do think Andrew Watt (as a producer) has some energetic infectious ability to get performances out of Pearl Jam, the Stones, Iggy, McCartney, Ozzy, etc. The bands he works with clearly love him. From everything I’ve read, he’s a fan first, so I think he just reminds these guys who they are. It just sounds too polished and clean for my personal taste.

lots of folks on the Rolling Stones subreddit agree with you

I'm with ya.....I don't love his productions. Serious lack of dynamics.

Does he get a brand new off the rack leather jacket for everything he does?

Click bait, there's no actual disagreement, the album didn't happen because Bill Ward couldn't do it and they didn't want to do it without him.

"Brummies in Taking-The-Piss shocker. Film at 11, babs."

What are you talking about? Iommi said the album didn’t happen because Watt was “too excited”, watt denies it

u/AnointMyPhallus 6h ago

Did you yourself actually read the article? He doesn't "deny" anything, he says Tony was joking and the album didn't happen because of Bill. The clickbait headline implies a conflict or disagreement that doesn't exist.

Apologies, I just realized you're a bot that just spams the same RollingStone articles on various subs. Please carry on with your noble work.

Yeah I’m definitely a bot, idiot

If a human being is actually spending their one life on this earth spamming rolling stone articles on reddit then that's just sad. Do you come up with the clickbait titles yourself or get them off a list?

So why do you only seem to mass post Rolling Stone content? Even if you're not a bot, your posting history doesn't appear organic at all.

I do not understand why anyone thinks his work is credible. I’ve been in the studio with him, and there’s just nothing there.
