But what about the sand and that line that you drew

236

u/thjeco 5h ago edited 5h ago

“That line in the sand, was it even worth it?
'Cause the way I see people turning's
Makin' it seem worthless, it's startin' to defeat the purpose
I'm watchin' my fan base shrink to thirds
And I was just tryin' to do the right thing, but word
Has the court of public opinion reached a verdict
Or still yet to be determined?
'Cause I'm determined to be me, critiqued or worshipped
But if I could go back, I'd at least reword it”

Eminem - “The Ringer” (2018)

u/My_Password_Is_____ 2h ago

Why cut it off there and not include the next two lines? It's not like those ones are unrelated.

36

u/ModernSmithmundt 1h ago

“And say I empathize with the people this evil serpent Sold the dream to that he's deserted”

14

u/MasterPuppeteer 1h ago

Because the next two lines make it clear that Kid Rock is not the kind of person he was referring to, so people using it like some kind of checkmate are full of shit.

•

u/My_Password_Is_____ 34m ago

I'm not fully getting your meaning here, are you saying I'm trying to use it as a checkmate and am full of shit, or the person I'm replying to is?

•

u/MasterPuppeteer 32m ago

Person you’re replying to. People trot out the line from Ringer like it supports the Kid Rock feature when it doesn’t.

•

u/My_Password_Is_____ 4m ago

Gotcha gotcha. Yeah, I agree there. I don't like the collab either, but that clip from the song doesn't really say what they're implying it does. But even if they think it does, at least present the argument honestly and give the full passage.

u/BawkSoup 4h ago

TDoSS made me realize he just doesn't care anymore. He's a product and he's happy about it.

16

u/Secure-Pain-9735 2h ago

That line is from Kamikazi, but ok.

9

u/gunnersroyale 3h ago

Toss was probably the best album since encore

7

u/mikehatesthis 2h ago

MMLP2 was the best one since The Eminem Show. Most of his records since TES have been really, REALLY forgettable.

0

u/gunnersroyale 2h ago

For me I went through a listen through of all the albums since tes and mtbmb and tdoss are the only albums that had more then 3 songs that I liked

5

u/mikehatesthis 2h ago

I'm glad you got more out of those albums than I did. There are a few songs I can say I like on those lesser albums but he clearly doesn't care about songwriting anymore, just being more spiritual lyrical miracle lol.

u/megalodondon 4h ago

Incredibly telling.

8

u/AgentCirceLuna 3h ago

I’d say it’s telling when the average person, privileged enough to do the same, isn’t there to help if it goes wrong for someone or is mysteriously still doing quite well for themselves despite all the ‘sacrifices’

4

u/BretodeauBredoteau 3h ago

Sounds more like “forget the court of public opinion and how pompously self important it is, I am going to choose what’s best for me rather than let myself be bullied into making the wrong choice by others.” Unless that was what you were trying to say?

7

u/My_Password_Is_____ 2h ago

Yeah, even as someone who isn't happy with the collab, I'm not sure how you can hear/read those lines and come away with anything other than "I think he's evil, but I wish I would have made my point more clear that I don't think all of his followers are inherently evil but rather that most were just tricked by a con man." I kind of feel like you have to be intentionally looking for something poor or suspicious there to take it any other way.

Then again, people intentionally reading what they want to out of things is the norm nowadays, so I guess I shouldn't expect anything else. Also convenient that they cut it off right before another bar or two that make it more clear.

6

u/BodaciousBadongadonk 2h ago

No, i would respect him more if he was spineless and followed the crowd like a redditor. Integrity is for the birds, just follow the majority whether you believe it or not! Dont even look into it, cuz if you dare ask for clarification you will be labeled an "enemy!"

u/Fragrant-Anywhere489 5h ago

the line in the sand only applies to fans. Not best friends. He just traded a million Stans for a ride in a Black Hawk.

93

u/Inkqueen12 4h ago

The black hawk must have blew away the line in the sand.

15

u/doshegotabootyshedo 3h ago

I’ve heard Google searches for big black hawk go up 5000% when RNC is in town

6

u/AgentCirceLuna 3h ago

Oh wait did I miss an obvious fucking joke

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 3h ago

I always wondered how easy it would be to just pseudo-scam old boomers like this by being all ‘ah yeah im the Black Hawk guy, you wanna see me if you’re booking a flight’, then just do their work for them to find one flying, then take some massive consultant fee. It’s not technically a ‘scam’ but it’s misrepresenting yourself I guess. But it might work to get an easy, cool thousand or two.

Edit

I feel like this is what Bukowski would be doing these days. ‘I stayed drunk for six months on that thousand, going in and out of rooming houses on the East Side. By the time it was over, I had to go back to begging and I’d fallen out of practice…

1

u/Secure-Pain-9735 2h ago

My wife has rode several Black Hawks. She said there isn’t anything like sitting on a big Black Hawk and getting a long, rough ride.

2

u/BawkSoup 4h ago

this is who he is. surprised?

1

u/Canvaverbalist 2h ago

He still support Drake because he was "generous to his daughter" like hello Em wake the fuck up why do you think he was lmao

1

u/KristabelleWalker 1h ago

This is making me sad laugh

1

u/Agreeable-Lie-6867 1h ago

id trade 50 stans for a miller lite. why do you want stan around theres clearly some bigger issues at play with him

140

u/PovasTheOne 5h ago

Unless that sand is somewhere with no wind, that line wont be there for long.

7

u/AgentCirceLuna 3h ago

Decent analogy for most people’s moral changes then. As soon as there’s blowback then the line disappears.

53

u/PM_me_your_whatevah 5h ago

A giant tidal wave of cash came and swept it away

40

u/everyoneisnuts 4h ago

Are you kidding? You really think a collaboration with Kid Rock brought him a tidal wave of cash?

8

u/Elelith 4h ago

No the cash he made before the collab that now has wiped his morals away.

8

u/8lock8lock8aby 3h ago

Your comment ignores reality, though. Em was already rich as hell when he did the BET cypher. And it's not like that was the last time he made his opinion of Trump known or took other political stances (like kneeling at the halftime show & coming out for Kamala in Detroit).

3

u/AgentCirceLuna 2h ago

It’s weird how right-wing people will mostly be fine with you, even when you’re from some group you hate, but left people will be all ‘ah but you said this on the 7th of October 2003 so I don’t trust you’

1

u/everyoneisnuts 2h ago

I’m not sure any of that was coherent.

2

u/everyoneisnuts 3h ago

He was friends with him coming up before they were both famous. He cannot stay friends with him even though he doesn’t agree with his politics? Maybe his morals are better than yours actually because he’s not ditching a friend who was probably there for him in life. So dumb that you think you know anything about their relationship and what he should and shouldn’t do about it.

2

u/ziddersroofurry 3h ago

Friends who perpetuate bigotry aren't good friends no matter how they were 'there' for you.

0

u/everyoneisnuts 3h ago

Forgive me, I don’t follow Kid Rock enough, but what does he do to perpetuate bigotry? Is it possible that Eminem does not share your opinion on Kid Rock doing that? Meaning, he doesn’t think he is a bigot?

2

u/AgentCirceLuna 2h ago

I honestly think… Kid Rock is not, like… he’s not FUN stupid, you know? Like, Em may have committed a crime by recording this song with him. I reckon he should get in front of a lawyer, tell them what he knew and when, so he’s not seen as taking advantage of this guy.

1

u/occasionalpirate 1h ago

There’s something off about Kid Rock. Yesterday he asked me why humans aren’t born wearing shoes. That’s not a normal, dumb thing to say. That’s something a psychopath who’s pretending to be dumb would say!

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 2h ago

Who’s to say they’re even friends? Kid Rock probably begged him to do this and Eminem thought ‘ah guess it will shut him up’

1

u/everyoneisnuts 2h ago

Did you read the quote in the headline?

0

u/AgentCirceLuna 3h ago

And 2Pac was friends with violent people. Dies that make him worse?

17

u/CryptographerLow6772 5h ago

I don’t think there’s a lot of cash in that wave.

23

u/SignGuy77 5h ago

… and what about when there was only one set of bootprints in said sand?

31

u/Wyden_long Go listen to The Streets “A Grand Dont Come For Free” right now 5h ago

4

u/JTHMM249 5h ago

I mentally reference this whenever I hear anything related to the poem and I'm glad I'm not alone.

1

u/Strawbuddy 5h ago

'So thanks Jesus, real helpful. Asshole'

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 2h ago

I’ve heard of an extended metaphor, but… extended over years?

2

u/Choice-Strike1 4h ago

Pft that was like a decade ago

1

u/LEDKleenex 3h ago

Funny watching redditors give him shit for making a new line in the sand as they make a new one day after day as these fascists take over their country with zero resistance.

Eminem has always been a white guy profiting off of black music. He's basically Elvis  in that way

Kid Rock though literally encourages pedophilia in his song "Cool Daddy" the lyrics are:

Young ladies, young ladies, I like 'em underage, see Some say that's statutory (but I say it's mandatory)

7

u/Alak-huls_Anonymous 5h ago

This is so original it's an actual lyric from an Eminem song! Lol.

4

u/Wampus_Cat_ 5h ago

It is a concept that worked and 20 million other white rappers emerged after him.

1

u/Jagasaur 5h ago

Lolol my first thought too. Can't remember what song, but I think it's several.

1

u/WhiskeyJack357 5h ago

Without Me I think

3

u/RoddyDost 5h ago edited 4h ago

This comment has to be bait. Comparing Eminem to Elvis, holy mother of god. Their creative processes are vastly different, but if you must compare them I’ll point out that actual black artists never had an issue with the way either of them did their music. Borrowing from other artists is an indispensable part of art and music. Black people invented rock and rap, but they don’t own it.

What a racist and ignorant comment you made, ignorant of both of those artists, of music history, and of music itself.

If you actually knew anything about Elvis, you’d know about his close personal and professional relationship with Fats Domino, who he always attributed as being one of his biggest influences. Elvis had such respect and admiration for him that he didn’t like being called “The King” because he felt that title was more appropriate for Domino.

Neither Elvis nor Eminem ever tried to lay claim to an entire genre or steal from black artists without attribution.

1

u/crysisnotaverted 5h ago

I can't believe this song with THAT lyrics was in the fucking Osmosis Jones movie.

0

u/whereisbeezy 5h ago

I always thought that was a weird thing to say. You drew your line in the and, ok, then I scuffed it over.

0

u/fireforge1979 3h ago

But they gave him lots of money, so that's ok!
