Of course Eminem can say "liberal and evangelical can agree".
They're both rich enough to be immune to anything negative from Maga while one actively grifts and or supports it.
It's easier to remain friends if nothing they influence affects them.

Wait Kid Rock is evangelical? Doesn't he break all the rules? I guess as long as they can declare they are evangelical or Christian and perform the right way nothing really matters.
19
u/AgentCirceLuna 1h ago
People are weird as fuck about that. I’m probably the only Christian I know who follows the no sex before marriage rule. Like I’ve been in bed with people, said we’d just stay friends or whatever due to my beliefs, then it would be actual Christians giving me the ‘wtf man’ response while atheists I knew would say ‘ah yeah that’s your own choice’.

One of the many things that bugs me about this is the line "Liberal and evangelical can agree," which feeds into the tired, false trope endlessly spouted by right-wing extremists that anyone who is not conservative or Republican must be an atheist or godless. It's not just wrong. It's a deliberate falsehood spread to indoctrinate people into hating the "other side" as a way to gin up votes out of division and anger.
For most people, faith has nothing to do with political ideology. Plenty of people on both sides are believers, and plenty of people on both sides live their lives as if there is no God.
137
u/onewilybobkat 4h ago
Jesus teaches shit that is antithetical to everything Republicans believe. If they don't keep painting liberals as godless heathens we might notice that there's nothing Christian about anything they do or say.
If there's a war against Christianity, they are the invading force.
14
34
u/guysitsausername 🔊 Eclectic & Dyslexic 🤘 4h ago
I couldn't agree more. Most so called evangelicals I have known are also the most worldly and ignorant of scripture. They cherry pick things that confirm their existing bias, quote out of context and use only one part of a passage which ignores or contradicts the true intended message.
4
u/AgentCirceLuna 1h ago
For instance im a Christian who doesn’t believe in casual sex but I also have an emotional revulsion to it (you could end up making someone pregnant and then screwing up lives) which I feel is my own personal choice, I don’t force it on anyone else, and I don’t feel anything but ambivalent about it. Most the people pushing me to sleep with people have all been religious people for some reason. Just weird.

American Evangelicals are post-Christian. Its the end result of Protestantism where the laity experience secularization, but there is no foundational church to help reckon with such a seismic shift in worldview. So everyone kind of just goes...schizo.
England has long had the Anglican Church, and Germany had federal State Churches...that is until 1919 when they were all dissolved. 30 years later, the Godless German people committed atrocities untold under the motto of "Gott Mitt Uns".
With regard to the US, the WASP aristocracy long controlled Protestant Church life of America until Reagan shattered the WASP aristocracy and replaced it with the White Scotch-Irish Evangelical aristocracy you see today. The power of America shifted from Anglican/Lutheran Protestantism of the Yankee North to Baptist/Calvinist Protestantism of the Dixie South.

You just can't pardon a group of people just cause now they want to be friends after a decade of destroying the world practically and basically just cause they mixed "by accident" Christianity with Kukluxklanity.

He's amplifying Kid Rock's message by lending his credibility to his projects. Kid Rock is on Fox & Friends calling El-Sayed a terrorist. Kid Rock doesn't live or vote in Michigan. Eminem does. Kid Rock is so irrelevant that his Trump shows fail miserably. Remember the Trump Super Bowl Halftime show that no one watched? The Freedom concerts that were cancelled? Just by having Em attached to this album gives it attention. Eminem is the G.O.A.T. Kid Rock is a goat. There's a big difference.

Tom Morello is as left wing as it gets, and he is friends with Kid Rock, and Kid used to give Tom's mother Pistons tickets.
Frankly, it's nice to see people who are different politically that can be friends and work together. It moderates people and moves them further from right or left wing extremism.
Russia has a long running social media campaign with the aim of dividing America into 2 groups that hate each other. Anything that works against that is a good thing.
It's a shame America isn't a 3 party system with a centrist party.
Edit... 3 party system. Everyone has a different idea of what centrist is. If Democrats are centrist, then a left wing party.
36
u/EmeraldJunkie 2h ago
If this was 20 or so years ago I'd be inclined to agree, but the state of the modern Republican party and how they're choosing to run the United States. I'm fairly left wing and I can certainly see the appeal and logic of certain right wing views, but then I look at the Republicans, ICE, embezzlement, corruption, the list is endless. It's little about different opinions but more about how one party is seemingly hell bent on dismantling any checks and balances in favour of fattening their wallets and removing the rights of their citizens.
When I was a kid I wanted nothing more than to move to the US. I fully believed in every bit of Bush and Obama era propaganda that told me that the US was where dreams could come true. The last decade shattered that dream with a mallet.

They have been friends long before trump came around. Being conservative or democrat didn't used to mean you would be lifelong enemies. Unfortunately the current political landscape has made it so.
246
u/NorthernDevil 4h ago edited 4h ago
It’s not like that happened in a vacuum. It’s easy to be friends when you disagree on things like foreign and fiscal policy. Less easy when you disagree on things like rounding up every immigrant and keeping them in camps for months in violation of the Constitution, or whether we should ban books in school libraries, or whether hospitals should be permitted to provide every effective treatment to at-risk pregnant women without fear of criminal reprisal.
Or, more pointedly, when you disagree on the importance of an underage sexual trafficking ring that heavily implicates a political leader.
When what’s considered “political” focuses so heavily on a lot of people’s ability to live a safe, healthy life, that changes the dynamic. Escalation always changes things.
You can’t really expect people to write those kinds of disagreements off just because they’ve now become “political” disputes, can you?

Back before this administration, people could be friends regardless of beliefs and political stances. It was like "I can't agree with you on xyz, but I'll vote how I want and you vote how you want and that's that"
Now? A lot of the current agenda is to drive a wedge between people and unfortunately it's working. Why would I want to be or stay friends with someone who voted for waves hands around this?

When "one side" of the political landscape promotes or enables the elimination and/or extermination of people I love and care about, it ceases to be about "disagreements". Because people are hypocritical online and generally want to cherry pick when it comes to morals, behind the anonymity. You can immediately tell like clockwork on this site of how the direction of the general online mob will go when it comes to different conversations.
People wants to act about cutting off anyone and anything in a form of Self-flagellation being the only end goal and everything is somehow in a binary 0 or 1 situation.
I certainly don't agree with Kid Rock's political alignment at all, but at the same time we don't know fuck-all about the history behind him with others.

You don’t understand. Redditors have perfect friends, they have a clean record and have voted purely blue on every issue and are the most empathetic people on this planet.

God it must be so nice to be so privileged and so wealthy you can stay friends with the maga conservatives who literally champion the very policies that once created the shit infested abusive upbringing you grew up in the first place. To be so disconnected and ignorant that literal oppressive politic beliefs are put aside for friendship. Fuck this entire country and the society it's built on.

Here’s a real hard fucking pill everyone needs to swallow: “His verse speaks to something we’ve talked about and that really needs to be heard: we differ politically and on other things, but we’ve stayed friends through it all…We hope that sets an example for people who’ve lost friends or stopped talking to family because they think differently.”
If we’re going to find a way to make it through, like it or not, we need to learn to reintegrate with these fucking imbeciles one way or another.
Good on both of them.

It’s hard to reintegrate with people who seek to divide us.

Yeah as much as I don't like it, these people aren't going anywhere. Don't get me wrong, I hope they stay far the fuck away from political power in the future but we do still have to share the country with them.

Here’s another hard pill for everyone to suck on: KR’s outspoken bigotry towards trans people is disqualifying from my friendship circle.

“In America, friends and families that were tight knit for decades can all of a sudden be dead to each other due to political beliefs. And two absolute complete strangers can all of a sudden feel they are blood-bonded just because of shared political beliefs. What a sad time for friends and family.”

Could be worst. I have a friend who is an Iraqi Christian (Assyrian specifically) her family lived in territory that was ISIS held. She said the second they rolled into town her Muslim neighbors basically threw them under the bus by walking around painting crosses and letting ISIS authorities know where the Christians lived. Christians under traditional Islamic rule have to pay special taxes and have other restrictions. These were people they grew up with, celebrated holidays together with, kids played with each other etc.
Sometimes when shit hits the fan people do a 180 and let their differences consume them.

No, these imbeciles need to be marginalised, because look what it leads to. You can't deal with bad faith actors. That was the mistake that was made last time

Gotta remember this is reddit and any opinions not matching theirs 1:1 are instead framed as unforgivable offenses. Thank God the normal world doesn't function that way. Nothing would ever get done and no progress would ever be made

Is it ok to be friends with someone who has wildly different opinions? Or should we shun our friends completely? I truly hate KR. I'm not a stan either. I'm definitely not a MAGA.

If my friends are racist.. then yes. I would shun them. Not that hard

I mean, there is a pretty clear difference between maintaining a normal friendship with someone who’s become very political in their professional life, and collaborating professionally with that person.

My parents are MAGA and like Trump a lot. I hate Trump, but they’re the greatest parents ever. They’ve shown me nothing but love and support. I’m straight, but if I weren’t, I would’ve been 100% comfortable coming out to them.
I’ve had numerous lefty friends (I’m not left wing either) act like they don’t understand why I haven’t cut my parents off because of who they vote for, despite them being great parents and amazing, loving grandparents.
It’s honestly scary seeing some of the people I know in real life cut their parents or other family members off because of who they voted for, despite those family members being genuinely good people who loved and supported them. Some of them even straight up lie and act like they were abused or neglected to justify it.
American politics has become very cult-like. It’s not normal to cut off people who love, support, and took care of you over people who don’t even know you exist.
