My parents are MAGA and like Trump a lot. I hate Trump, but they’re the greatest parents ever. They’ve shown me nothing but love and support. I’m straight, but if I weren’t, I would’ve been 100% comfortable coming out to them.

I’ve had numerous lefty friends (I’m not left wing either) act like they don’t understand why I haven’t cut my parents off because of who they vote for, despite them being great parents and amazing, loving grandparents.

It’s honestly scary seeing some of the people I know in real life cut their parents or other family members off because of who they voted for, despite those family members being genuinely good people who loved and supported them. Some of them even straight up lie and act like they were abused or neglected to justify it.

American politics has become very cult-like. It’s not normal to cut off people who love, support, and took care of you over people who don’t even know you exist.

Yep. MAGA families are definitely the victims in this whole crazy thing......

This is the thing with this situation: if they aren't the ones in the detention facilities or shot in the streets, why should they care?  Mom is nice to their grandkids, why shouldn't she be allowed to yell at a waiter?

Yeah, I don’t participate in the oppression Olympics. You have fun, though. Hope your side gets gold.

I know that, in this day and age, it’s popular to play the victim. The bigger the victim you are, the more points you get. But my post has nothing to do with anyone being a victim. I know this might come as a shock, but there are situations where no one is a victim.

Your example was personal - I get that.

What your message missed though was the utter demonisation by MAGA of normal americans as 'the liberals' 'communists' etc. "Lock her up" was a chant at rallies for who was simply a political opponent.

The one sided nature of your example had me cynical I guess.

But you are right. You do you. Good luck to you and the family.

Similar situation here except my dad has been selfish and shit for my entire life. Always put himself before his kids. I forgave him so many times but I have drawn and line and that is that.

Really only matters if the politics directly affect you. Since they don’t, you don’t care. And that’s fine, but own up to it.

•

u/ReadyStayReady 7m ago

High likelihood you are arguing with a marshal mathers PR campaign bud. Their only relevant take is that slim shady money their firm is taking to manipulate public opinion

•

u/Ares__ 6m ago

Dude he can care, he may even try and talk sense to his parents. He votes dem, might donate and protest too. What does cutting off his parents accomplish? They will still be maga and he will have destroyed his life with his parents who apparently raised him to be who he is and not a maga one of him and robbed his kids of apparently amazing grandparents.

I understand politics is very dark right now, but you can still care deeply and not cut your parents out of your life.

Before people help you, do you ask their political affiliation and dont interact with any maga folk?

Own up to what ? Loving my parents ?

What is my post not owning up to ?

•

u/serene_null 23m ago

Not that, it’s a tricky subject to discuss on a forum. My point is that until politics directly affects you, like we’ve seen with Trump supporters whose foreign wives, undocumented parents, or employees have been deported, most MAGA supporters either applaud, remain indifferent to, or actively support the suffering their beliefs cause.

Loving your MAGA parents is understandable, and preferable for your own emotional well being. But it’s not the moral high ground it implies.

•

u/Ceo-Of-TND 19m ago

I’m not interested in having the moral high ground, honestly. I’m interested in doing what’s best for me and my children.

That’s all I think about when it comes to politics and voting: what will benefit my children’s future. I have no obligation to anyone else.

•

u/Citizen-Kang 6m ago

...and there it is. Its all about you and screw everyone else.

•

u/Ceo-Of-TND 5m ago

Yeah, I’m not going to vote to actively hurt my children. You caught me being a loving parent. 😂

•

u/Real_Avocado6969 19m ago

Exactly. Person isnt affected so they dont know. I notice how Ceo trashes on liberals but shuts up and says NOTHING about what conservatives have done.

•

u/443Waves 26m ago

The problem is that they treat the rest of the world like shit.

•

u/gonzo_redditor 22m ago

I argue that anyone who voted Trump in 2024 is not actually a good person. They care for their tribe but will happily watch an outsider struggle and die.

•

u/Monkeyboy451 15m ago

It’s honestly scary. To cut someone off for their political views that aren’t harming your actual relationship in anyway is weird to me. The far left and far right have so many similarities in how they treat others with opposing views

•

u/Ceo-Of-TND 11m ago

Yeah, American politics in general are basically cults at this point. They demand undying allegiance. You’re not supposed to criticize your own side or speak up when it does something wrong, and you’re expected to abandon your family if they have the “wrongthink” or question the powerful politicians leading your side, politicians who don’t even know your name.

•

u/Monkeyboy451 1m ago

Exactly and politicians that don’t even care to know the people they represent. The system is heavily flawed and built for division only at this point.

Great point. You illustrated that perfectly. Thank you for responding

u/born2bfi 1h ago

Wow. Good right up. My parents were hardcore MAGA but the shift has been on for the last 6 months or so. They are still republicans but hopefully left the MAGA train for good. Hopefully your parents exhibit similar logic soon

Ah yeah, my sis groans about mom’s Trump support all the time. It’s almost annoying, they aren’t living on the same game board as us. They are still the only parents we have. Why even bring politics with them.

u/bingersforall 58m ago

Yeah my mom voted for Trump, and my mom will say some wild shit sometimes, but for one she's older and comes from a different time. Another thing is she's just not that well informed when it comes to politics. She doesn't understand the big differences between a CNN or Fox News. To her it's just the news.

She's also one of the most accepting people I know. When my brother had a black girlfriend my mom treated her just as good as she treats my wife. My mom would help her babysit her son. She's accepting towards gay and lesbian couples. She doesn't understand it but she treats them just like she would anyone else. She donates her money and time to different causes. She's accepted all her children for what they are and has only been supportive.

Reddit wants to treat every Trump voter like they're the same and it's just not true. I have no doubt in my mind that my mom would help anyone she's capable of helping no matter who or what they are. These are things are alot more complicated than some people want to make them.

Yeah, I’ve got people in the comments calling me a “Nazi sympathizer” because I said I won’t abandon my loving, supportive family, who raised me, because of who they voted for.

American politics are just cults at this point.

•

u/Low_Key_Trollin 39m ago

Anyone that cuts off their loving parents bc of who they voted for are brainwashed trash ass human beings

•

u/abracadabra12983 36m ago

😄😄😄 sure because it's nice to not have a spine right?

•

u/Low_Key_Trollin 13m ago

Yes real tough guys cut off they’re parents bc their opinions offends them. So strong 💪

-1

u/MarginOfSanity 1h ago

No this is not the same thing. They are destroying the country and are the worst people on the planet. You are the same thing as Nazi sympathizers. I hope all of maga pay a very heavy price.

3

u/Ceo-Of-TND 59m ago

Oh no, some loser on Reddit called me a Nazi sympathizer because I won’t abandon my parents, who have shown me unconditional love and support and do the same for their grandchildren. Whatever will I do? For the love of God, pick up a hobby, get a significant other, go outside, and touch grass.

It always amazes me how people recognize all the cult like tendencies in the other side, only to turn around and engage in those exact same tendencies themselves

My friend died in ice detention center after they ignored him despite him coming here at 3. Your parents are part of the reason he died. And you want to pretend like it’s just a difference of opinion

•

u/Ancient-Bat1755 37m ago

Easier to change the minds of others if you dont abandon them

•

u/Skinnecott 12m ago

who do you think is the most evil peraon on the planet? putin? mao? kim jong?

do you think they love their fucking families? of course they do. but they are evil. just like your parents. just like you.

•

u/Ceo-Of-TND 8m ago

Yeah, I know, bro. I’m a Nazi, 4chan, incel, genocider, misogynist, racist, and whatever other new buzzwords the ADL has on its website.

•

u/Pjfett 6m ago

That's the thing though, when people are nice to you but incredibly shitty towards everyone else in who they put in power, that means you are the exception to how they think about other people, not the rule. So in reality your parents are shitty people because they voted in somebody that has killed a minimum of a million people around the world with doge, made life hell for millions of others with ice, and tipped the world ever closer towards conflict and death. They are just nice to you specifically because you're their daughter. Politics and principles are not separate things and people need to stop pretending they are.

•

u/Skinnecott 17m ago

you are complicit. your parents voted to kill and destroy americans, and you fully support them. eat shit and go fuck yourself for what you and your parents did to this country

•

u/Cdmdoc 5m ago

She deleted a comment down thread which clearly reveals that she’s not just complicit but also a maga supporter.
