If this was 20 or so years ago I'd be inclined to agree, but the state of the modern Republican party and how they're choosing to run the United States. I'm fairly left wing and I can certainly see the appeal and logic of certain right wing views, but then I look at the Republicans, ICE, embezzlement, corruption, the list is endless. It's little about different opinions but more about how one party is seemingly hell bent on dismantling any checks and balances in favour of fattening their wallets and removing the rights of their citizens.
When I was a kid I wanted nothing more than to move to the US. I fully believed in every bit of Bush and Obama era propaganda that told me that the US was where dreams could come true. The last decade shattered that dream with a mallet.
Integration is a failed policy and people should stick to their own kind? Isn’t “exposure” and mixing with other people the accepted “cure” for bigotry? If no one chooses to be kind to or befriend a bigot because they are a bigot, how is exposure and integration supposed to help them change? Everyone has their lines, and everyone can choose what they are or aren’t willing to deal with. No one is required to be or remain friends with someone who support things they consider evil. But if I look around, I’m pretty sure that “people don’t spend enough time in their isolated and ideologically aligned groups, and spend too much time talking to people who support the wrong things” isn’t the problem that we appear to have.
I agree with you. But I'm trying to take a pragmatist approach, believing that some people that vote that way are brainwashed by propaganda, and have been taught what you are saying is propaganda, so think you are wrong and the other party is evil and so are all of their supporters.
My main focus is having people learn, then maybe change their opinions. It won't change them to be uncivil to them. But engagement can. And many if them are ignorant rather than malicious. Sure, a lot of them are malicious, and F those people, but many are merely misinformed and need education, and they're only going to engage with someone who is civil.
It's hard to see the emporer has no clothes when everyone around you tells you about how fine the clothes are.
So the same appeasement bullshit that hasn't worked for decades? "Just be nice and civil to the people calling you mentally ill for simply wanting healthcare"
Naw, fuck off with that milquetoast centrist nonsense
