One of the many things that bugs me about this is the line "Liberal and evangelical can agree," which feeds into the tired, false trope endlessly spouted by right-wing extremists that anyone who is not conservative or Republican must be an atheist or godless. It's not just wrong. It's a deliberate falsehood spread to indoctrinate people into hating the "other side" as a way to gin up votes out of division and anger.

For most people, faith has nothing to do with political ideology. Plenty of people on both sides are believers, and plenty of people on both sides live their lives as if there is no God.

Jesus teaches shit that is antithetical to everything Republicans believe. If they don't keep painting liberals as godless heathens we might notice that there's nothing Christian about anything they do or say.

If there's a war against Christianity, they are the invading force.

I couldn't agree more. Most so called evangelicals I have known are also the most worldly and ignorant of scripture. They cherry pick things that confirm their existing bias, quote out of context and use only one part of a passage which ignores or contradicts the true intended message.

For instance im a Christian who doesn’t believe in casual sex but I also have an emotional revulsion to it (you could end up making someone pregnant and then screwing up lives) which I feel is my own personal choice, I don’t force it on anyone else, and I don’t feel anything but ambivalent about it. Most the people pushing me to sleep with people have all been religious people for some reason. Just weird.

The quiverfull movement alone is just insane to me.

It’s not even that. That one has people intentionally breeding their wives to ridiculous amounts.

This guy is bringing up how the average Christian man still fucks around like crazy when they’re young (while still holding the women to that standard a lot of the time). Most Christians are just treating it like team sports while following little to none of the stated ideals of the religion.

American Evangelicals are post-Christian. Its the end result of Protestantism where the laity experience secularization, but there is no foundational church to help reckon with such a seismic shift in worldview. So everyone kind of just goes...schizo.

England has long had the Anglican Church, and Germany had federal State Churches...that is until 1919 when they were all dissolved. 30 years later, the Godless German people committed atrocities untold under the motto of "Gott Mitt Uns".

With regard to the US, the WASP aristocracy long controlled Protestant Church life of America until Reagan shattered the WASP aristocracy and replaced it with the White Scotch-Irish Evangelical aristocracy you see today. The power of America shifted from Anglican/Lutheran Protestantism of the Yankee North to Baptist/Calvinist Protestantism of the Dixie South.

They always have been ever since the Puritans were shunned from Europe. They rebranded a couple times but they're still a cancerous sect of Christianity who only care about growth and influence over everyone not just their followers.

This right here. I have no idea what bible these people are reading.

Well I think specifically that evangelical Christian ideology is pretty conservative.

Black Baptists are evangelical, but overwhelmingly vote Democrat.

I’m progressive and I’ve always been at odds with the church. I’m more of a Vincent Van Gogh follower.

Only in the US. Which basically proves you wrong.

It’s impossible to guess how many Reddit commenters are middle/high school kids, bots, paid domestic or foreign antagonists, or just sad trolls.

But the discourse on here is just so depressing. The need to include a condescending zinger with nearly every comment is ridiculous

Okay AnalBloodTsunami.

u/Swagnets 3h ago

My dear it wasn't a condescending zinger. The point is thst outside your little dystopia evangelists and liberals have a lot of crossover, which makes the statement 'evangelists are conservative' false.

1

u/AnalBloodTsunami 3h ago

I hope you’re getting paid to promote divisive online rhetoric because if you’re doing this for free, that’s just so very sad

Oh shit sorry. Yes master I'll agree with whatever you say master yes evangelists are all crazy conservative racists master thanks for enlightening me to the correct, non antagonistic opinion sir.

Im not religious myself but every evangelist I know here is a strong liberal.

u/AnalBloodTsunami 2h ago

Good lord 🙄

u/Swagnets 3h ago

How is that relevant to the blanket statement that evangelists are all conservative? I dont see why Eminem and kid rocks nationality has anything to do with that. Then again im talking to an American so I'll go ask my cat for her opinion.

17

u/wagon_ear 5h ago

It's pretty clear that when Eminem says "liberal and evangelical can agree" he is talking about American political environment, so as narrow as you think my definition of evangelical might be, it is the relevant definition for this conversation.

Funny enough this is due to CIA actions during the first red scare

I have been watching documentaries about world history and politics. If you have any books or documentaries to recommend, I will check them out.

u/Daredev44 4h ago

I’d highly recommend the Devil’s Chessboard by David Talbot which tells the story of Allen Dulles and the formation of the CIA. Also Errand into the Wilderness of Mirrors
Religion and the History of the CIA

Plenty of people chose to keep prioritizing conversion therapy, xenophobia and abortions instead of actually think on the best for everybody.

You just can't pardon a group of people just cause now they want to be friends after a decade of destroying the world practically and basically just cause they mixed "by accident" Christianity with Kukluxklanity.

Oopsy my bad, let's be friends.

Historically some sects like Catholics even lean much more left. Not as much these days.

false trope endlessly spouted by right-wing extremists that anyone who is not conservative or Republican must be an atheist or godless.

believing in god is a conservative viewpoint

it's wild how many people will believe in god, go to church, get married, go to school, make good money and have kids, and then think they're not conservative when they've completely bought into the entire faith-based conservative capitalist paradigm
