Is it ok to be friends with someone who has wildly different opinions? Or should we shun our friends completely? I truly hate KR. I'm not a stan either. I'm definitely not a MAGA.

39

u/tatianazr 4h ago

If my friends are racist.. then yes. I would shun them. Not that hard

2

u/Juvat-the-bold 4h ago

A lot of Eminem's friends are racist. They just aren't the white version.

My parents are MAGA and like Trump a lot. I hate Trump, but they’re the greatest parents ever. They’ve shown me nothing but love and support. I’m straight, but if I weren’t, I would’ve been 100% comfortable coming out to them.

I’ve had numerous lefty friends (I’m not left wing either) act like they don’t understand why I haven’t cut my parents off because of who they vote for, despite them being great parents and amazing, loving grandparents.

It’s honestly scary seeing some of the people I know in real life cut their parents or other family members off because of who they voted for, despite those family members being genuinely good people who loved and supported them. Some of them even straight up lie and act like they were abused or neglected to justify it.

American politics has become very cult-like. It’s not normal to cut off people who love, support, and took care of you over people who don’t even know you exist.

7

u/qxa899 54m ago

Yep. MAGA families are definitely the victims in this whole crazy thing......

•

u/ILikeLenexa 13m ago

This is the thing with this situation: if they aren't the ones in the detention facilities or shot in the streets, why should they care?  Mom is nice to their grandkids, why shouldn't she be allowed to yell at a waiter?

1

u/Ceo-Of-TND 50m ago

Yeah, I don’t participate in the oppression Olympics. You have fun, though. Hope your side gets gold.

I know that, in this day and age, it’s popular to play the victim. The bigger the victim you are, the more points you get. But my post has nothing to do with anyone being a victim. I know this might come as a shock, but there are situations where no one is a victim.

4

u/qxa899 42m ago

Your example was personal - I get that.

What your message missed though was the utter demonisation by MAGA of normal americans as 'the liberals' 'communists' etc. "Lock her up" was a chant at rallies for who was simply a political opponent.

The one sided nature of your example had me cynical I guess.

But you are right. You do you. Good luck to you and the family.

•

u/detlefschrempffor3 2m ago

Similar situation here except my dad has been selfish and shit for my entire life. Always put himself before his kids. I forgave him so many times but I have drawn and line and that is that.

4

u/serene_null 51m ago

Really only matters if the politics directly affect you. Since they don’t, you don’t care. And that’s fine, but own up to it.

•

u/ReadyStayReady 7m ago

High likelihood you are arguing with a marshal mathers PR campaign bud. Their only relevant take is that slim shady money their firm is taking to manipulate public opinion

•

u/Ares__ 6m ago

Dude he can care, he may even try and talk sense to his parents. He votes dem, might donate and protest too. What does cutting off his parents accomplish? They will still be maga and he will have destroyed his life with his parents who apparently raised him to be who he is and not a maga one of him and robbed his kids of apparently amazing grandparents.

I understand politics is very dark right now, but you can still care deeply and not cut your parents out of your life.

Before people help you, do you ask their political affiliation and dont interact with any maga folk?

The problem is that they treat the rest of the world like shit.

•

u/gonzo_redditor 22m ago

I argue that anyone who voted Trump in 2024 is not actually a good person. They care for their tribe but will happily watch an outsider struggle and die.

I mean, there is a pretty clear difference between maintaining a normal friendship with someone who’s become very political in their professional life, and collaborating professionally with that person.

1

u/Generico300 46m ago

What makes you think a collab between 2 musical entertainers is necessarily political at all?

Can we stop framing deplorable shit as just “different opinions”. If someone said the age of consent should be 12 would you say they are just wildly different opinions and then hang out with them?

→ More replies (19)

44

u/anon33249038 5h ago

I'm big fan of downvotes.

Yes, it's perfectly fine, and I would even encourage having friends of differing opinions.

51

u/SoCalThrowAway7 5h ago

There are some opinions that I can’t stomach other people having. Like if someone thinks some inherent characteristic, like skin color or sexuality, disqualifies someone else from basic human rights, then that’s not something I can just say “agree to disagree” on. I can disagree all day with someone on where tax dollars should go and still be friends with them, I can’t be friends with a Nazi though.

23

u/jdanielregan 4h ago

And KR’s outspoken bigotry towards trans people is disqualifying from my friendship circle.

6

u/Vyzantinist 1h ago

I, too, would not want KR in my friendship circle.

What if they support nonces?

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 3h ago

I had the misfortune of actually finding out a customer at work was a former convict for rape offences… and the fucking manager was chatting to him like he’d just come back from a nice vacation a few years back instead of PRISON. People were either pissed about it or they would ignore it. Found it insane.

Edit]

If you’re curious how I solved this issue then me and all the staff who served customers refused to serve him or acknowledge him until he stormed off.

3

u/tmzspn 3h ago

Which opinions are we talking about?

2

u/AgentCirceLuna 3h ago

People think im doing well for myself on my massive income but im not. The fact is, after my huge mortgage, my sports car payments, my passport wife’s green card expenses, my imported wine, beer, whiskey, vintage car collection being paid off, insurance that gives me appointments twice a week, psychiatrist who I can call nightly, wife’s rare purebred dog, my horse, my stable payments, my golf club membership… after all this.. I have NOTHING left over!

u/AstuteRabbit 3h ago

I work in new construction in South Florida. You’d think it would be all out warfare between the trades but it’s the complete opposite. Most folks are pretty open which side they lean. Jokes are made, people don’t like one another but it never gets out of hand.

2

u/TickingTheMoments 4h ago

Having different opinions is one thing. If you say you love coffee, ice cream and I say, I hate coffee ice cream, that’s a difference of opinion.

When someone’s differing opinion means that they put another human being at a level below theirs, that’s not a difference of opinion that is bigotry and thats not tolerable.

→ More replies (9)

3

u/Denz292 4h ago

A differing opinion is something like “pineapple does or does not belong on pizza”, not “I believe homosexuality is a sin, therefore same sex marriage should be illegal”.

1

u/thecodeape 3h ago

Haha suck it! Upvote for you.

1

u/Global-Chipmunk-3959 1h ago

Having friends with different opinions is normal, but being friends with bigots and misogynists, who seemed to take pleasure in oppressing people is supporting them, and if you can’t understand the difference than you’re part of the problem.  Sucks to be friends with you.

•

u/Brotherman_Bagel 17m ago

Op is a bot

2

u/KirbyBucketts 3h ago

"differing opinions' is such a hollow, vague, meaningless statement.

Any specific examples?

2

u/BarryTheBystander 2h ago

Use the context clues. Kid Rock is a big republican so different political views for one

1

u/KirbyBucketts 2h ago

He's not just a republican, he's a diehard MAGA..Which is why I asked for specific examples

"I'd prefer this shirt in blue"

"I think it would be fun to kick puppies"

One of those is an example of something that should not be shrugged off as simply a "differing opinion"

Most redditors are anti-social freaks so they unironically would. Funny enough, their mental health is also fucked. Almost like shunning a support network is a bad thing!

41

u/CelticsGreg 5h ago

Reddit’s filled with weirdos who cut off their family for voting differently

4

u/ScubaSteve-O1991 3h ago

I feel that shows there are more issues within those families than just political differences.

23

u/slippery_hippo 3h ago

And the real world is also full of people who disown their children for being different

11

u/zberry7 2h ago

There’s also plenty of people who don’t you just never hear about it. It’s the internet, the loudest minority seems the largest majority

2

u/ComputerIlliterate13 1h ago

It's not just the internet. Having worked in the mental health field there are a ton of LGBTQ kids and adults who get disowned by their parents. Half of LGBTQ+ adults report being estranged from at least one family member and they are twice as likely to be estranged from a parent

1

u/zberry7 1h ago

And you don’t think you have a biased sample set? Those kids whose parents don’t do that aren’t going to come see you. And LGBTQ affiliation isn’t the only way children can be different. Plenty of different kids are accepted by their parents too, especially when we were originally talking about politics, not sexuality.

4

u/ComputerIlliterate13 1h ago

I did have a biased sample set, which is why I also provided you with figures from studies that back up that its way more common for LGBTQ+ people to experience that. And even in my biased sample set it was way more common for the LGBTQ+ patients to be having family issues than all the other patients at the facility.

u/Gwen_The_Destroyer 3m ago

Hi! My parents told me to my face they would mourn my death and I wasn't welcome back at the house in 2018 and then pretended I didn't exist for the last 8 years. Made it abundantly clear I was on my own while I went though homelessness because my landlord didn't renew my lease after I came out as trans.

Well, my father reached out through a third party very recently and wanted to know how I was doing. Do you think I should just pick up where we left off? He has never met my wife or even knows I'm married, let alone literally anything else about me. Because he told me flat out, to my face that he didn't want to know.

•

u/zberry7 0m ago

I’m sorry that’s happened to you but if we’re talking personal anecdotes then I have totally different beliefs to my father and we have a great relationship. And we are on Reddit where there exists a strong bias. So while I do sympathize with you and I’m sorry you’ve had to go through that experience, that doesn’t invalidate my point.

How is who they voted for a nazi?

1

u/sp33dzer0 1h ago

Well there was this whole thing where his former chief of staff talked about Trumps admiration of nazi Germany. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/politics/trump-said-hitler-did-some-good-things-and-wanted-generals-like-the-nazis-former-chief-of-staff-kelly-claims

I doubt it’s just “voting different” most of the time. I know some people who are fairly apolitical and ignorant and just believed Trump when he said he’d make the economy better and whatever other vague promises he made about improving the quality of life for people.

That’s one thing. I mean, you should probably take a course on recognizing con jobs, but I digress.

Another is folk gun ho about Trump to this day, who have seen the abject cruelty, bedlam, lawlessness, corruption and are still on board, generally because people they don’t like get hurt. Or because of bigotry.

That’s a whole different thing.

I think sadism, bigotry and lack of moral values are valid reasons not to want people in your life.

Not on Reddit. There’s no nuance on this website.

6

u/therealswimshady 5h ago

Yes, it is perfectly ok to be friends with people who have different opinions.

2

u/Kzzzm 4h ago

Look at you having a mature and adult take!

1

u/SilkwormAbraxas 5h ago

Depends. What is the opinion? Is it something like, “slavery is acceptable”, or “certain people, based on immutable characteristics, are inherently less deserving of humane treatment”?

-5

u/Quick1711 5h ago

Slavery is acceptable? Is there slavery going on in first-world countries? Did I miss something in the news or are you referring to 100 yrs ago?

It’s ok to have different opinions. It’s ok to associate with people who have differing opinions and views. We’ve done it for centuries.

They both came out of Detroit area at around the same time. They crossed paths and probably did become very close friends.

You know the one thing they probably don’t talk about with each other?

Politics

1

u/xtr44 3h ago

Is it ok to be friends with someone who has wildly different opinions?

of course it's obviously okay? the drama is not because Eminem is friends with him, it's because he's giving him more recognition etc

1

u/ArrivalWest9317 3h ago

it’s not about opinions.

1

u/Truth-is-implacable 3h ago

Is Eminem a Fetterman?

1

u/StatmanIbrahimovic 3h ago

Eminem didn't run for office pretending to care and then stopped giving a fuck; He has never given a fuck.

1

u/theskiller1 3h ago

Different opinions aside who wouldn’t wanna be friends with Trump? What a great guy!

1

u/Deerhunter86 3h ago

I don’t know. I mean, it’s not just standing on the opposite side of the aisle. It’s supporting this outright regime and what they’re doing to humans. I feel like it’s different now, than just dems. vs republicans.

1

u/Repulsive_Garage8276 3h ago

Fuck ALL MAGA scum. They are fascists. Cut them off and malign them.

1

u/aca689 3h ago

Being a racist is a bit more than different opinions.

1

u/TheRaccoonReport 3h ago

Well in 2026, nuance is extinct, duh. /s

Sure, is KR an opinionated piece of shit? Sources say. Yes!
But I also have friends that are opinionated pieces of shit, but are good to their neighbors, charitable, and if I called them at 3am and in trouble, they'd ask if they need a weapon, shovel, bail money, a ride, or a shoulder to cry on.

While I definitely don't agree with KR politically, or really on anything. I'm sure he may be that guy to Em.

More nuance, less binary decision making.

1

u/SalvationSycamore 3h ago

It's not just opinions, it's actions. The guy makes propaganda for the administration. I genuinely would not be able to continue a friendship with such a person, and I don't understand how someone who claims certain values could

1

u/Unlucky_Put_5040 3h ago

I shun all MAGATS

1

u/Shigglyboo Strung Out✒️ 3h ago

i have a friend who's maga. he believes democrats are mutilating children. he's out of his mind. but I'm still his friend. we haven't talked in ages. but I'd consider him a friend. If he asked me to rap on his album I'd probably say no though.

1

u/thetravelingsong 3h ago

For a long time sure. When the difference is “my friend supports pedophilia” I think it’s personally reasonable to cut off contact

1

u/grittycrescendo 3h ago

100% I'm not staying friends with people who have completely opposing morals to me. It's really not that complicated to understand, and it's not wrong to feel this way. Like, wtf are you saying? I could give you countless examples but let me give one: your friend is illegally deported. Your best friend is 100% in favor of that happening. You're just going to... Remain friends? And pretend it's just some normal "difference of opinion"? Some "opinions" are absolutely fucked and I have zero interest associating with those who hold them. Give me a break.

1

u/Dear_Lab_2270 3h ago

I'm a liberal and have conservative friends. I don't have Maga friends. What they believe isn't a difference of opinion, it's morally wrong.

I have a friend that was arrested for cp, we don't hang out anymore. It's not that me and him have a "difference of opinion." It's that who he is doesn't align with my moral values.

I'm not a celebrated rapper and I can have morals, so I don't understand why Marshall can't. Loved his music growing up, I just didn't think he'd age into such a weak man.

He ended peoples careers over the mention of his daughter then hangs out with a man who sang a whole song about wanting to fuck underage girls like Haley and sided with a president that said the same. What would Trump have said about Haley when she was 14? What did he say about his own daughter Marshall? He was talking about his own daughters tits when she was 14, you think him and kid rock are good company? Weak ass man. Old friends my ass.

1

u/Zephyrantes 3h ago

Totally cool with it. I have far left friends and far right friends. Politics and beliefs divide people, but their overall character is what i really see.

1

u/ZoSoTim 3h ago

We still saying the fascism currently happening in the US is “just politics”?

1

u/dnt1694 3h ago

The point of diversity is to have people with different view points.

1

u/TorkBombs 2h ago

Genuine question? Yes absolutely it's ok to be friends who have different opinions. It's fucking boring to live your life around people who only agree with you. That doesn't mean you go around recruiting racists to hang out with, but this bullshit about dismissing people just because they don't vote the way you do is really harmful to our culture.

1

u/Ok-Astronaut2976 2h ago

Depends on the opinions.

Did my friend go nuts and start machine gunning cases of beer because a trans person drank it? Did my friend put on an alternative Super Bowl half time show to protest…the existence of Puerto Ricans. Has my friend spent well over a decade loudly promoting the most vile civil culture and politics of our generation?

If so…ya, I wouldn’t remain friends with that person.
Why would I? So I can hang around and listen to them rant about Fauci and welfare Queens all day?

1

u/-2wenty7even- 2h ago

Kid Rock supported Eminem before he got famous. They're both from Detroit as well, I believe. Not everything is black and white - I'm pretty sure Eminem talks about their relationship being about brotherhood and not political affiliation in the song.

1

u/reddituserask 2h ago

It’s not about the friendship. They can be friends. It’s that his music reaches millions, platforms any artist involved, and generates a ton of money for them. Platforming kid rock is the issue not being friends with him.

1

u/Dear-Highway2425 2h ago

You can disagree with someone's political viewpoints and still enjoy hanging out with them.

These two are musicians, they have opposing political beliefs, but they can still make music together because that is something they have in common and enjoy.

People need to chill-the-fuck-out when it comes to the political tribalism.

1

u/LoganHowlett1832 2h ago

Depends. Does that person think all your biggest fans are enemies and go on news networks saying how they’re evil monsters? Kid rock was on Fox News just this week saying we need to deport Muslims because they’re going to start a civil war.

If so no you shouldn’t be friends with them anymore.

1

u/ja20n123 2h ago

On Reddit, cut them off completely cause they are absolutely disgusting and horrible hitler equivalent

IRL, keep them cause your friendships don’t depend on political ideology

I know it’s shocking to hear, but Reddit isn’t real life. Most times if you follow the advice of Reddit in South Park ski instructor voice “you’re going to have a bad time”

1

u/BigidyBam 2h ago

They can be friends without him being on his record publicly endorsing him during such a controversial time. Their friendship is not the thing people are pissed about, watering the argument down and blaming people for being unreasonable feels exactly like maga political propaganda.

1

u/wbruce098 2h ago

Sure, but doing a collab is a bit weird.

1

u/LargePrompt5840 2h ago

My friend left a beer half full a decade ago. Sometimes I wonder how he's doing.

1

u/thepianoman456 2h ago

I have an old friend that started hitting the drink pretty hard, and became more racist and kind of stealth-maga.

I’m still cool with him and hang out occasionally, but we’re certainly not as close as we were because of his life choices and his personality change. I want to be less and less associated with him.

Eminem is certainly making a choice to associate with a known racist, fascist douchebag.

1

u/tasteMyRottenHoop 2h ago

Not if those wildly different ‘opinions’ are about civil rights. Have wildly different opinions about chocolate brands, not whether certain societal groups should be treated like dirt.

1

u/TgetherinElctricDrmz 2h ago

Little bit more than having wildly different opinions.

This guy headlined the turning point show. He shot Bud light with a rifle because they did a funny ad with a trans person.

I don’t really care if Eminem does a song with him, but let’s not pretend that it doesn’t say something

1

u/mamulian 2h ago

You truly hate someone you don’t even know? Thats sad.

1

u/Jknowledge 2h ago

There’s a difference between disagreeing on tax policies and disagreeing on whether or not certain groups of people should be allowed to exist.

Kid Rock lit up a pyramid of beer with an assault rifle because bud light gave one to a trans person. That’s not a “casual disagreement”

1

u/GiveMeSomeShu-gar 2h ago

Same. Terminally online people inject politics into everything nowadays. It's so tiring. They don't realize they are being played as fools by social media algorithms.

1

u/sayheykid24 1h ago

Not everything always needs to be a political statement. Who knows how much of Kid Rock’s MAGA schtick is authentic anyways - probably has to do more with catering to an audience that still cares about him.

1

u/kykid87 1h ago

Yes, it sure is

1

u/Tr1pline 1h ago

That's half the country. Might as well undo civil war and separate the north and south.

1

u/kiddpk 1h ago

Definitely cutting people off if they believe in policies that actively hurt communities

1

u/CuteComplaint5542 1h ago

When people say this it's usually because those wildly different opinions don't have consequences that directly effect them and are easy to ignore.

Doesn't make you mature or wise, only motivated by your own comfort.

1

u/innociv 1h ago

I had to cut off one of my best friends, and haven't talked to him for almost a year now, because he started to say things like "all my normal friends from church think protestors should be shot, too, and that unidentifiable secret police are good. You're the one with radical opinions."
I try to be friends still with people with very different opinions, but there's a difference between difference of opinion and enabling evil people.

I can't imagine being friends with someone like that, like Kid Rock. These are plainly evil people. It reflects very poorly on Eminem. I don't think it's okay.

1

u/TheSupremeHobo 1h ago

If they're opinions are against people's rights or wildly authoritarian, no imo. We're not arguing about pizza toppings.

1

u/IdoMusicForTheDrugs 1h ago

I have no problem being friends or family with people who vote MAGA. My issue is that they can and usually do talk about Trump being amazing all the time and if I ever say he's an idiot or talk about democratic socialism, they get all weird and stop talking to me for months. It's almost always a one way relationship and I'm sick of it.

1

u/MurkDiesel 1h ago

it's one thing to have different opinions

it's another to be vocally aggressive with hyperbolic hate-filled bigotry

people keep keep trying to pretend that the political divide is like sports team rivalries

if someone openly talks about how your parent/spouse/sibling/friend is a huge supercunt, are you still friends with them?

i'm not, but we're all raised differently

1

u/pornisgood 1h ago

Is it ok to be friends with Nazi's before they did Nazi things?! It's just a difference of opinions!

1

u/hutthuttindabutt 1h ago

Is it ok to be friends with a Nazi? Hard no to that from me. MAGA is Nazi.

1

u/HonestDishonestWork 1h ago

I'm an industrial mechanic so my choices are MAGA friends or no friends. Which sucks, by the way.

1

u/Blue_Waffle_Brunch 56m ago

This is really the argument. Do I need to drop my old friends because the internet says so?

1

u/kiwigate 56m ago

This isn't about friendship, it's about a joint business venture.

1

u/DiscussionSlight7314 55m ago

There’s not a difference in opinion when it comes to things like civil and constitutional rights, value for human life, ped@philia,r@cism, or r@pe so we are clear. There’s not. At all. Those aren’t values you should be looking past. If someone truly becomes educated and goes about expressing remorse for their Past beliefs and things they promoted, then you can move forward. But not til the person making dehumanizing others and committing genocide their whole personality is no longer that persons’ God. This is really disappointing as a long time female fan. I won’t listen to that track if I can avoid it, I can’t control if it gets played somewhere obviously, but I also won’t stop listening to Eminem.

Being friends with someone is different from working with them and earning them money when you're a public figure

1

u/Pacific_Rimjob_831 48m ago

Really depends on how you define "friend". Can you really be friends with someone who doesn't share your core values?

1

u/V1198 42m ago

It’s ok to be friends.

That said, right now, the gulf between parties is one side believes we all have rights and the other side believes only some people are even people.

How that gets bridged by a distant friendship is beyond me.

MAGA people should be shunned yes

•

u/Sarz13 38m ago

People who end friendships, relationships, family whatever over political opinions is just fucking stupid as hell.

•

u/7StarSailor 31m ago

depends on the opinions

Different opinions =\= Different Human Morals

•

u/Little-Stage1948 30m ago

Redditors for the most part is open minded, as long as you agree with them

•

u/DubTheeBustocles 17m ago

I mean, it depends on what you consider to be a wildly different opinion.

Would you be friends with someone that thinks that his speed limit should be 10 mph higher? Would you be friends with someone that thinks rich people should pay significantly more in income taxes? Would you be friends with someone that thinks women should lose the right to vote? Would you be friends with someone who thinks it’s righteous to overthrow the government in order force your conspiracies and prejudices onto the rest of society? Would you be friends with someone that thinks child marriage should be legal? Would you be friends with someone that wants to actively genocide half the country?

There is a broad spectrum of differing opinions. Is there is no one you wouldn’t be friends with?

•

u/ReadyStayReady 9m ago

Is it ok to be friends with someone who has wildly different opinions?

Wow, what a wildly dishonest take. That isnt all this is about and you know it. This has got to be astroturfing no one is this daft

u/Bromigo112 5m ago

You’re the man

•

u/sleepnow 2m ago

To be OK with Trump is saying you're okay to turn a blind eye to corruption, rape, and pedophilia.

That being said, both political extremes appeal to people insecurities, fears, and desire for belonging.

Damn, I miss the 90s.

u/TruuPhoenix 4h ago

Is it okay? Yeah, you can do whatever you want, to be honest. However…

Two rich people having “wildly different views” isn’t the same as everyday people having “wildly different views”.

They can minimize their politics to just “different views” or whatever they want it to be because it doesn’t materially affect them. For both of them, the other person is the “exception” to whatever is wrong with society, regardless of what they believe.

Their kids, or the kids in their families, don’t have to fight in wars, or worry about the cost of living, or have to deal with their “friend”’s quality of life being diminished.

Quite frankly, “politics” for them are the proverbial “pizza topping”, “how do you like your coffee”, type of question for the everyday person.

u/TitanYankee 4h ago

That's not what rich people do. That's what normal people do.

The world would be in such a better place if everyone could be friends with people with different opinions. We need more of this.

2

u/SuccessfulAccount360 3h ago

Ah yes, just be friends with people who believe you and your loved ones shouldn't exist and are actively working to make that happen. Totally reasonable.

1

u/AndrewRnR 2h ago

I have no idea what you are talking about. I think you are missing the general point people should be open to being friends. How am I suppose to know your situation?

Depends on the views. If a friend of mine suddenly hated gay people. Then no, I wouldn’t be friends with him anymore. I mean we’re not talking about pizza toppings anymore. MAGA historically might be considered the new wave of Nazis in the upcoming decades.

Edit: Getting downvoted for this comment is wild lol

It’s fine to be friends. It’s also fine to say to your friend, “Dude, you’re being an enormous ass right now and I don’t want any part of that.”

2

u/Up_All_Nite 4h ago

Well, I think these people need a voice of reason. We shun them to their own echo chambers. Some people are beyond any hope I suppose.

1

u/Zacherydoo 4h ago

I would shun a friend if they had kid rocks "politics." Easy. I already have to deal with my dip shit dad, I don't have time for more of it.

2

u/rewas456 3h ago

Honest question - Do you also shun people that wouldn't?

It seems like you are allowing opinions (i.e., ideologies, or opinions on how the world should work) dominate your life. So pretty narrow minded. Seems like you think you're smarter than other people.

(Fuck Trump tho)

It’s ok to have friends with different opinions, in fact it is encouraged, but it is not ok to have friends that hang out with Nazi sympathizers, bigots, and racists. When you allow those folks to dine at your dinner table, it kind of implies that you are one too.

1

u/Sixgis 3h ago

I have a friend who "isn't maga" but defends everything trump does, his admin and is very ignorant with policts and current events. He's also always been there for me, is genuinely a good person, and is very kind. Policts almost never comes up between us we know we have polar opposite views, and that's okay

1

u/PharmyC 3h ago

Sure, for you. But many people those differences in politics have real impact on their lives. Trans person can't really be friends with people who think they should be erased politically.

1

u/Meleagros 3h ago

Dude some trans people choose to be in relationships with these folks, I don't get it, not my place to ask.

1

u/House_Junkie 3h ago

I’m a moderate conservative and my best friend of 27 years is a far left progressive. We’ve gotten Into it over the years with our differing opinions and are still best friends. I’m very thankful to have him to expose me to the sides of things I don’t always see or are not exposed to normally and he’s said the same to me.

2

u/JparkPHX Hip-hop/RnB 2h ago

This is exactly how it should be and what makes America great. I’m a Christian and I’ve always liked the adage of hate the sin love the sinner. You can disagree but still love your friend. And the goal is if you can still maintain that friendship you can hopefully talk and get them to see the error of their ways (in your opinion). The hate on both sides just shuts people down and pushes us all further away

•

u/House_Junkie 40m ago

We’re both pretty dug in with our opinions but have done well listening to the others side over the years and can’t imagine not having him or his friendship in my life of a difference of political opinions but I know how common that is.
