Genuine question — do charts even matter in present day?

Never in my life have I made a decision about listening to a song or not based on its position in any chart.

Is Olivia Rodrigo is going to have meaningfully less exposure?

I honestly dont get why any of this matters in a world of streaming platforms and social media. The whims of the algorithms probably have more impact on exposure.

Agreed, look at Stella Lefty. You can’t tell me people are actually listening to that shit and it’s not just billionaire daddy buying numbers

A lot of people mainly listen to spotify generated playlists, she gets a lot of plays that way. Its basically a modern version of pop radio stations that play the most inoffensive music to appeal to a broad audience that just want to put on something in the background and not think too hard about it.

We usually play music at my place of work and I commented how I liked a couple of the songs my coworker was playing (she is 10 years younger than me is a bit more into the stuff that hits the charts than I am), and she told me she normally uses the Spotify dj to generate a playlist for work.

Shortly after I realised that the songs started repeating because it was like 100 songs max, and she kept playing the same list for a few days even though we listened to Africa by Toto several times a day. It drove me kinda insane but she honestly did not notice.

Everytime I add her name to my tiktok content filters, all my filters get deleted somehow.
