discussion Feeling weird about liking old music

does this break the sub rules:

Hello, lately I've been having some intrusive thoughts that suck the joy out of music I love, the vast majority of albums I listen to are from 50s to 80s (classical music is my favorite and by far what i listen to most but let's ignore that for now), this started really bugging me, like why the hell I'm I listening to something so damn old? I mean the only active musician I listen to is Kanye, but the majority of my favorite musicians are long dead, this makes feel like my taste is dead or stuck in the past, I know for a fact the kind of music I love almost certainly will never become famous or made again.

I forgot to mention I'm 19 so that's the problem, does anybody also face this? If so how did you deal with it?

For reference, other than classical I listen to jazz, soul, and some kinds of rock.

This. Just sit and enjoy the music you like. There are plenty of old albums that still stand toe to toe sonically with modern music.

That makes you not like everyone else you meet. Definitely not a bad thing!

Listen to what you like and don't worry about what people you don't know on the internet think about it.

I don't, it's not that others opinions that bother, it's with myself.

While the music you love may never be famous again, there are definitely bands that continue to play those genres. Jazz, Soul, and Rock are far from dead genres.

I know the genres are still thriving in their communities, it's just that they are so different from how they sounded back then (which I guess is the normal thing) that I don't enjoy them.

I guarantee that there are bands that play the styles you like.

If you are familiar with jazz musicians like Oscar Peterson or Bill Evans please share them with me, most people recommend musicians like Vijay Iyer which I don't vibe with, though I agree there is a soul revival with labels like Colemine and Daptone.

I don’t know what you like about Bill Evans so I don’t know what to recommend. If you want to hear music that you like, you’re gonna have to find it yourself.

There are definitely bands that play all of those genres in the classic styles. Still jazz bands that do big band stuff, soul bands with horns and everything live, and of course you can still go to the symphony and see classical played exactly as it always has been.

I myself play in several rock bands that are original bands but sound more like we existed in the 60s/70s than today. So we do exist. Just takes a little digging.

I wouldn’t worry too much about this. You like what you like and that’s that. Now you just gotta find your people who play it and/or love to listen to it, like you.

I'm sure there are acts like this, like Greta Van Fleet or some jazz band playing the standards, but I'd then ask why just not listen to the source like Led Zeppelin or Miles Davis.

Why listen to Miles Davis and Zeppelin in the first place? Because you like them. People listen to music that they like.

Because they are no longer performing, and live music is a whole other experience. That’s the thing that makes it still feel alive these days.

You’re… fretting about being yourself? I think you’ll come to find a great sense of relief in not being like everyone else.

Brother this is a non issue that shouldn’t be worrying you for any reason. Stop caring about what others think and just live your life your own way dude

It's not that I care about others opinions, it's a problem with myself, "why the heck I'm I enjoying music made 50 years ago?".

Why is that something wrong and why are you letting it bother you?

I mean, I assume it's good to keep your finger on the pulse, rather than sticking to mostly fixed stuff.

Yeah god forbid you listen to Led Zeppelin and Marvin Gaye over fuckin Sabrina Carpenter or some shit.

You like what you like. Why fight against it?
